The institute is quite some distance from the village and at considerable elevation, one needs transportation to get to/from it. By pre-arrangement, I was met at the Shirakawago bus stop to be driven up to the institute. Transportation is available to/from village as needed. My room was spacious with very good amenities. The front desk staff were excellent. The restaurant food was very good and its staff excellent. Free wireless internet connectivity was available in the main building. The mountain setting is splendid, with much snow around when I was there. On my day of departure, my luggage was stored free of charge at the village information office until I was ready to leave on the late afternoon bus. I enjoyed my all too brief stay there.

Good:
The hotel is on the hill and you can enjoy the view of the mountains. There is snow at our hotel whereas at the Shirakawago village there is no more snow. It is away from the busy street and very spacious with big compound. The room comes with a balcony with great view.
Bad:
The location is away from the main street and need a car to reach.

This hotel is outside of the town, we took a shuttle up to it and it really was an up. The building is a very nice blend of japanese and western hotel design, very understated and simple but also very comfortable. The restaurant is an interesting blend/fusion of japanese and french cuisine. Very good.

The property is about 10 minutes drive from the Shirakawa-cho bus station, and they have shuttle to drive you there both ways. Upon arrival you'll get this mountain resort feel, staff were all very friendly and speak English well.

Property was beautiful, as we visited during the winter there were a lot of snow, they have a family play park were you can build snowman or snow dome, some tools and boots can be lent and they also have a dry room for visitors to dry their shoes which I found very handy. A nice walk down the hill will lead you through a small forest and some views of the mountains. As our time here was very limited we didn't get to try their programs, but it seems quite extensive and very family friendly.

There are around four buildings here, one for the lobby/restaurant, one for activities and two for rooms, all connected by air-conditioned corridors and easy to get around as they give you a map and explain everything in detail upon check-in. Our room was with a bath(some doesn't) and was very spacious with a high ceiling as it's on second floor. Bed was very comfortable.

The open-air bath is just superb, they lowered the lighting to give you access to the starry night, and what's more to ask when you can sip into the hot springs while catching shooting stars with snowy scenery besides you.

Another great surprise was the accompanied dinner, it is well above our expectations. The quality of their ingredients is top-notch, every piece of vegetables and meat is so delicate and cooked perfectly. We only took the half-course but were well satisfied. They also have an extensive wine list with local wineries and selections from around the world. The breakfast was also delicious, no fruits was the only downside for me.

A very pleasant stay especially when this kind of quality can be found in this country area. There's only smiles that we've been seeing here. Will recommend to everyone.

My family and I stayed at the Toyota Shirakawa Eco-Institute for a night. The hotel arranged a free shuttle to pick us up from the Shirakawa-go bus interchange after we arrived via highway bus. The resort itself was about 10 minutes by car behind the mountains above Shirakawa-go. The village is not visible from the resort. In front of the resort, one can visit a replica of the gassho-zukuri houses of Shirakawa-go. We stayed in a twin room (which also has a convertible bed sofa) with attached bathroom. Not all rooms have attached bathroom. Dental sets must be requested from front desks. Wifi widely available around hotel. There are also coin operated laundry and dryer facilities. As we arrived in the evening, we opted for the 1930 hours dinner session. We had excellent full French dinner, which consisted of starter, soup, bread, pan-fried fish, grilled beef, jelly and chocolate pudding. Breakfast was also at the same restaurant, but it was buffet with simple options. Resort also has nature activities for its guests (outdoor and nature type activities) but are conducted in Japanese - we didn't opt for it. Before the resort dropped us back at Shirakawa-go, we regretted not trying the supposedly excellent onsen. Perhaps in our next visit.

Located in the mountains, tucked away from the tourist packed Shirakawago, this hotel offered a refreshing experience to our Japan trip. It was snowing when we stayed here in April, providing a scenary which was in stark contrast to that in Shrakwago. The hotel had an interesting architecture and the nature guide in the morning was a pleasant experience. And the French dinner course was parfait. Choose the full course option- You don't want to miss the beef. It was so tender that it could melt in your mouth.

We stayed there three day. This hotel is located near world heritage site five minutes ran by car. French cuisine is super delicious and French loaf is also cryspy and we got hooked. Shirakawa village is famous for its architect style Gasshou-dukuri. It looks old typical traditional Japanese style. So I recommend to go there for foreign people. This hotel is built by log style and our family can learn a lot of things about ecology and nature . Shizengakko means school of nature. I was very impressed.

This was a truly lovely place to stay. The room was comfortable with a great view out over the woods. We had hoped to see a bear walk past but we were not so lucky. My husband went in the hot-spring and enjoyed it a lot.
The best thing about this place was the food. The evening meal was served in the institute's restaurant. It was without any doubt the best meal we had in Japan. The food was superb!! and the wines were excellent.
Finally the staff was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we only stayed one night. We would have loved to have stayed an other night and gone on an organised walk.

Alternative stay if you do not want to stay in the village. Transport provided, just around 10mins drive from Shirakawa Go, the staff slow down driving speed to let us have the bird's eye view of the Gassho Zukuri village. Dinner was simple but serve in nice presentation, and taste good. From check in to check out, each staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
