Hotel staff picked us up from the train station, a very convenient service. Free kitchen for use, spotlessly clean with most utensils you would need. Self service laundry also available. There was a nice restaurant cum lounge area for guests to mingle, with games, tv and free coffee!! A Small Onsen was nice and quiet.

Rooms were Ryokan style, very clean, very comfortable. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Breakfast was a simple set meal as well. Everything was lovely.

Hotel Kiyomizu Bozansou was an amazing and memorable stay for me particularly due to a combination of their exceptional staff service (very helpful and friendly people!) coupled with the coziness and spaciousness of the entire place. Very personalised service as well since there weren’t many people around.

Would 10000% stay again.

I can't say enough good things about the Hotel & Resort Kiyomizu Bozanso! I've never had better service, and I've stayed at a lot of hotels around the world. And it is a perfect place to stay for families. Our primary reason for staying there was its proximity to the Snow Monkey Park, but it turned out to offer so much more. The kids were always entertained with ping pong, foosball, a TV with a large movie selection, and plenty of lounge space. The rooms were very cozy, clean, and spacious. The kids and the adults alike loved the futons, and the bathrooms were well kept too. We were surprised there was an onsen on the main floor, which was very relaxing.

But now to the service: The morning we woke up we were surrounded by snow. Unfortunately, the snow chains I had weren't adequate without a jack for the tires. An employee tried for a long time to help me put on the chains, and then drove to get a jack. He somehow managed to get them on after I had quite a struggle. We wouldn't have gotten home without him as it snowed all day. The front desk attendant offered to drive me to the local convenience store to get food for my family as well. I can't believe how willing they were to help my young family as we were far away from home. The staff made their hotel feel like home, and I will always be grateful to them for the that. The fact that my family were able to stay entertained through this long, discouraging ordeal says volumes about how wonderful both the facilities and the service were. THANK YOU!!!

CONS: Hotel is a little tired and dated
PROS: Huge room and fabulous host in Heday. Best nights sleep in Japan.

Heday is a nice and generous host. He met us at the station and drove us to the Ryokan - and later to the Monkey Park.
Onsen in hotel is good, LOADS of space with table tennis for kids.
This was completely different to our experiences of Japanese big city hotels and would be a great choice with family or friends.
Heday made time for us to have a glass or two of sake as well :) and for reference is a HUGE Rolling Stones fan.
Would definitely stay again when we come back to Japan.

Location of hotel is beautiful, 10 min walk from Yudanaka train station. If you call ahead they are happy to pick you up. They also provide you with car service to the Snow Monkey park which was very convient.
ok, now for the negatives. Heat in the winter time is not enough to warm the bedroom, even with all of the closet doors and bathroom doors shut. Room was uncomfortably cold. Private bath, besides being freezing, has NO hot water, so up and down 3 flights of stairs down a cold hallway to shower in the public bathroom downstairs. They recommend that you use the onsen no more that 10-15min per use. I used it maybe 5min. Eight hours later I noticed some weird bumps and redness on my neck, like a rash. I didn't think too much of it. 24 hours later it turned into burnt skin around my neck. I spoke to the manager of BOZANSO‏ and tried to show him my burns asking if he had a first aid kit or something to put on it. Although he was very nice and personable man, he did not feel obligated to assist me with this. Lady who worked at a convience store in Shibu Onsen was nice enough to get me some aloe which helped a little. After seeing my Doctor here in the states, their onsen left me with first and second degree burns. It is 1 week later, I still have a small scar on my neck but am feeling much better.
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND BOZANSO‏
TO ANY FELLOW TRAVELERS.
They are negligent in regards to guest personal safety. If ever visiting the area again, It would be money better spent to stay at one of the more expensive and prettier Ryokans down the street.

Booked a quadruple room on hotels.com for $300/nt. Expensive, but breakfast was included and it was high season and reviews indicated that shuttle to train and snow monkey park was included. Upon arrival, front desk demanded over $100 more because their reservation only showed 2 people, even though I showed my receipt for 4 people. We had no choice, so I paid it. Room was very cold and heater shut off in the middle of the night. Futon and blankets were very thin and threadbare. Restaurant food was all microwave food - pizza, ramen, frozen French fries, etc. All terrible. Breakfast was good, but small and overpriced. Worst part was NO SHUTTLE! And the location is far from train station and restaurants. Over $400(US) for 1 night to sleep on the floor in a cold room. TOTAL RIP OFF!

My partner and I stayed at Bozanso for 2 nights in April 2015 and we had the most relaxing and comfortable stay. We would come back again any time.
Contrary to what the outside looks like (a small to medium sized motel) Bozanso is anything but your regular motel. Bozanso is more like the extension of the owners family home. The owner and his mother and all of the staff were extremely nice and friendly. They were helpful when needed and always had a ready smile or laugh. The owner spoke good English although my partner speaks Japanese so we had that advantage also.

Our stay started with a pickup from the station by the owner and a quick stop at the Onsen to drop off our bags before the owner drove us to the Monkey Park. Later he also picked us up from the Monkey Park and drove us back to the Onsen. This was a bonus we were not expecting and made the first day so much smoother and easier.

We then had the most relaxing evening using the Onsen baths before the best nights sleep of our whole trip in Japan (30 days). We had a Japanese style room using futons for the beds and they were so warm and comfy, much better than most of the western style beds we had used on our trip!

The following day the owner drove us to the station for our trip exploring the local area. There are many small towns a short train ride away and of course the 2 Onsen towns themselves within a short walk. Nagano is also an easy day trip. And of course the ski fields are not far away too if you are into skiing (several resorts were still open in mid April). When we returned from our day out we decided to walk back from the station to the Onsen and it was only about a 15min walk up the hill (not a steep hill though). It was after dark and we felt quite safe although it was very cold.

The furniture at Bozanso is not new and glitzy modern like some hotels but it is all functional and clean to use not to mention comfortable. But dont expect reclining massage chairs or 50 inch LCD TV's. However there is a table tennis table in the lounge area that was fun and plenty of chairs and lounges around on which to relax, talk, drink or read.

The food was great for both breakfast and dinner, both were an incredible array of multiple Japanese dishes of all types. I wanted to try everything and quickly found that even though it doesnt look like much food it is very filling, mind you it saved us money because we only needed a small light lunch. We were asked when we wanted our meals and they were ready for us right on time.

There was everything we needed at the Onsen and we could have stayed much longer but unfortunately Tokyo beckoned and we had to move on.

I feel that I should mention the few points that if I was being picky I would call negatives but I will point out that none of these things took anything away from our enjoyment of staying at Bozanso and we will stay here again if we come back to Yudanaka.
1. During our stay there was no hot water in the room shower but we never needed it anyway. The Onsen bath was far too good to miss and so we simply showered in the wet room of the bath before having a soak each morning and evening. This was a much superior way to start and finish the day than a standard shower or bath in a small bathroom. We had no issues with this at all though I understand that some people may do.
2. Most people would view the TV in the room as very small, very old and the screen not adjusted well. However this was not a negative for us as we only intended to use the TV each morning to get the weather forecast and then promptly switched it off. We had no other need for the TV and so this was not an issue for us as it served the purpose we needed it for.
3. The kerosene (I think) heater in the room that supplements the air conditioner was very smelly and took some getting used to. Having said this it kind of added to the homeliness of the room and of course the smell was only there when the heater was switched on. I have a sensitive nose and so I might be a little more sensitive to the smell than most people but my partner also commented on it.

Having said all of the above I would recommend Bozanso wholeheartedly and we will stay there again should the opportunity arise.

I am so conflicted about this review! On the hospitality and service - 5+! On the facilities, ugh, about 2.5. OK, here's the deal. Let's start with the service. The owner Heday-san is as charming as an innkeeper comes - and his trusty sidekick who prepares the meals and cleans the rooms has his own charms. They go so out of their way to be helpful in every possible way, from tips on what to do (and not do), to even serving as a free taxi service. This is really a quirky nice atmosphere here. OK - on the facilities - well, they are indeed aging. This is a place in desperate need of a good cleaning or entire renovation. If you know the economics of an innkeeper, you'll be more understanding why this hasn't happened. This place reminds me of a small Okura Hotel which had style in its day - but its day was 30 to 40 years ago. So, it's definitely rough around the edges. the thing that bothered me the most was the dust - it was in the air and got in my nose and lungs, just couldn't get rid of it. The room was very spacious, but everything is just old. No hot water in the shower, some of the electrical outlets didn't work, etc. As for the in-house onsen, well - that's had better days, too. Bright spot, though, is the meals. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner here each evening and the food was just fantastic. I usually get the urge to go out to a restaurant, but the meals were well worth staying in. We stayed there during a few of the later days of Golden Week (May) - and were just about the only ones there. All in all, I could see how this would be a fun, quirky place during ski season with friends who want something friendly, homey and different. But for families, I think I will go for something more contemporary next time around; then again, my six-year-old didn't have any complaints at all. BTW, this sleepy little town is really "sleepy" - not much to do, unless you walk up to the walking street where there are onsens and some restaurants. this is the closest train stop to the snow monkeys. I certainly don't regret our stay, but I think i'll go for something more contemporary next time around. I hope this review is helpful. I have a feeling most people will either love it, or just not be comfortable - definitely not for the discerning traveler.

The hospitality of Heday-San was the hospitality of our stay at Boazanso. Heday-San picked us from the train station and also took us next morning to snow monkey park m, before dropping us back to the train station. While the hotel is slightly dated, the facilities such as toilets are clean and functional, with in house onsen. Would recommend Bozanso for Heday-san's hospitality.

This was our favourite accommodation in Japan. Our room was beautiful, big and the view of the snowy mountains was breathtaking. The hot spa is pure bliss. The owner Heday is the best host ever. He is friendly, helpful and did everything he could to make our stay enjoyable. He picked us up at the station and dropped us off at the snow monkeys everyday. Bozanso is also walking distance to the convenience store and the few restaurants.

I made 2 separate bookings for 3 rooms each in Bozanso, Yamanounchi Japan for a group of 7 adults & 4 children about two months ago at the HOTEL.COM website for the following dates:-

1) 8 Dec 2018 (check in) to 9 Dec 2018 (check out); and

2) 9 Dec 2018 (check in) to 10 Dec 2018 (check out)

Children above 2 or 3 years are also considered adult under the Japanese context and so there is no concession for children aged more than 2yrs or 3yrs .

On the 23 April 2018 (Sunday), Hotel.com sent an email to me informing me that the hotelier wanted to cancel my booking made for 8 December 2018 assigning the reason that "THEY ARE UNABLE TO HONOR MY RESERVATION" for the cancellation. Unfortunately I missed to read the aforesaid mail.

On 24 April 2018, I received an email to confirm that my cancellation of the rooms at Bozanso on the 8 December was confirmed. I WAS SHOCKED and after clarifying with HOTEL.COM, the request to cancel was made by the HOTELIER, BOZANSO stating that the hotelier was UNABLE TO HONOR MY RESERVATION. Goodness, TWO MONTHS after placing my reservation which was confirmed accepted by HOTEL.COM. However, my other reservation for 3 rooms on 9 December 2018 (Check in) was left intact by the hotelier.

Luckily, the dates for the intended stay are still about 8 months away and I still have time to source for other hotels around the vicinity but the prices would be much higher as compared to two months ago. HOW CAN THE HOTELIER BE SO UNETHICAL, THEY SHOULD BE EXCLUDED IN ALL THE HOTEL RESERVATION WEBSITES.

BEWARE if you place your reservation for rooms in BOZANSO, YAMANOUNCHI JAPAN. This is my advice to ALL TRAVELLERS.

Frederick Teo
