A great Sunday lunch, well cooked meat and a good selection of veg. The roast parsnips were delicious. with plenty of proper gravy. Blazing log fires and a friendly welcome from the landlord and landlady

A great Sunday lunch here with masses of veg, we were so full we couldn't even contemplate pudding. It's a very friendly pub, always helpful and great to take the dog in. We live 20 miles away but it's worth the trip, good beer too and a great welcome.

Thank you for your great review. I do try and tell Chef that we'd sell more puddings if he didn't make the dinners so big but to no avail! Glad you felt at home with your dog too - we are a genuinely dog-friendly pub and I love fussing over our four-legged visitors. Call in again soon.

Have visited here a few times previously when we've stayed at Matfen Hall, but decided to come up for Sunday lunch and so pleased that we did. It was cooked perfectly, I couldn't make my mind up whether to have the pork or beef & the chef suggested to have a bit of both! They don't have an extensive menu...

Thank you for your lovely review and sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I agree that small is perfect when it comes to our menu, and Hubby does do the perfect Sunday Lunch! Honestly, your positive review really helps us carry on through the winter months.

A proper pint, great service, a good crack and home cooked food. Rare to get this type of pub in this day and age. If you are bored of faceless, ubiquitous chain pubs then get yourself over to Matfen and the Black Bull.

Sorry for the slow response. Thank you for that lovely review. Being a real country pub, we get all sorts of farming folk in here so don't mind a jot about your smelling of sheep! You'd be very welcome back anytime. Thanks again, Ali

We visited on Sunday at around 5pm and was dissapointed to find out lunch finished at 3pm. But the owner quickly offered us two roast beef dinners in about 15 mins.
