We went here for a birthday meal on Friday - our 1st visit. The food was excellent - the best steak we'd had in a very long time. The service was good and the restaurant nicely done out. We will definitely go back

We were recommended the George by the bride of a wedding we went to. Having arrived at 10ish and asked if there was any chance of an early check-in, we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded and taken to our room. The room was outstanding, clean, full of character and had an amazing bath in there too! The bed was...

We arrived 15 minutes before the end of service on a Saturday night and they kindly managed to fit us in. The food was the best pub food I have in the area and beautifully presented. There was a little delay in our order due to a mistake in the kitchen. However, it was very well dealt with by the...

So glad that you enjoyed your evening - and even more pleased that you will be back! We do our best to get it right every time, and you are correct that we were very concerned that we made an error. Please come back soon! Christian (the Dane) and Di.

We stayed at the George for 5 nights; a lovely, quiet place. Our twin room was well furnished and the wet room en-suite was well appointed. The food was much more than "pub grub". The menu was thoughtful, creative and very enjoyable; the beer was well kept and the breakfasts were very well cooked (no yogurt/fresh fruit, though). We were...

Used the George for the first time since the new management....... it was absolutely brilliant. The service was professional and friendly and the food was not the ordinary "pub fayre".... the menu wasn't huge but so much thought had been put into the choices that I still had trouble deciding as everything was so interesting and different. Ended up having...

I decided, on the spur of the moment, to take a long weekend and, as my partner is disabled, wanted to find a place with proper disabled facilities, rather than just lip service being paid. I chanced upon the George having decided on Devon and the disable-adapted room was available. The hotel is a rebuild of an old coaching inn...

It was such a pleasure to have you both staying with us, and so glad the room fitted your needs. As you know, if your needs change at all then we can also raise the bed by around 10cm which may help further. I do hope you wander down this way again, we would be delighted to see you both....

I chose to stay at The George at random and I was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and well furnished and the staff very friendly and helpful. The choice of food was good and the Tribute well cared for. As someone who was away on business and needed to be on the road by 08:00 it was handy that...

So glad you had a comfortable stay. Both Christian and I used to travel a lot on business and we really work hard to put in place those things that make a difference when you have a busy day ahead. I really hope we see you again soon.

We stayed here as a break away from the bustle of a city. The pub is set on the edge of a small town and is quite quiet. The staff are friendly and the Sunday lunch was very good for a reasonable price. There's relatively limited parking behind the pub and it's not immediately obvious where the car park is...

Thank you for taking the time to review us, and glad you enjoyed your stay and lunch. I agree the carpark isn't obvious to find; we do try to give directions to get to it, and where possible we advise people to use the postcode EX20 3HA which takes you to the rear of the pub. We will try and...

After a fire in 2010 the place was rebuilt to look like the original. It certainly looks and feels authentic. Had coffee and a few beers after a wonderful trip to the markets. Coffee was strong and the beer cold (!). Well worth a visit. Close to the post office.

We had a lovely family gathering at The George to celebrate our parents 54th anniversary. The meal was wonderful, interesting and tempting menu with some good old favourites alongside some new and out of the ordinary dishes., Well cooked using a wide range of local ingredients - not your run of the mill pub grub by any means! Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The George is located in Devon's smallest town, Hatherleigh. The pub is famous for its lively and welcoming atmosphere, and provides great freshly cooked food, drink and effortless service. Soft modern furnishings complement the traditional and historic building features, creating a warm, inviting feel. A pub with pub values offered with style, charisma and personality. Our menu is a mix of great pub classics and modern English dishes, with sharing plates for informal dining and a great range of mains. We take pride in sourcing our produce locally where possible, and are proud of the sensational food we offer. We offer 13 delightful ensuite rooms, some of which have four poster beds and feature baths. One of our rooms is fully accessible for people with disabilities. ... more   less
