Our campsite, situated in the hills of Béarn, is surrounded by spectacular views of the valley of Salies and of the Pyrenees. We welcome all campers to contribute to the family-like ambience, and to take coffee on the terrace or to picnic together when horse-riding. Having been in this Medieval French area for over thirty years, we are well known for a laid-back atmosphere which was successfully summarised by one guest who said 'no rules, only love'. Children love to help catch and groom the horses and can enjoy numerous activities including splashing in the swimming pool, go-karting, singing round the campfire, football and volleyball matches and stroking our tusked pig Basquo and the little bunnies. Those who want a break from the bustling barn often wander the nearby markets which are hububs of food, animals and chatter, go walking or cycling through beautiful scenery, visit San Sebastian, or swim and canoe in Salies' rivers. René, Marianne's son, also has his brewery onsite for those who take an interest in proper home-brewed beer. If you prefer wine, our neighbour does wine-tasting evenings, or you can enjoy his wines from our veranda. Each evening, you can watch the sunset from the terrace or on horseback, riding through meadows. The evenings also host our talent shows and billiards and ping pong competitions among the wealth of opportunities to make friends with enthusiastic people from all over Europe.

This is more of a campground rather than a tourist park. It has clean amenities, (although old and dated), and has some sites with electricity. It is in a rural setting and on the property there is a bar. The staff are pleasant and welcoming. However, we struggled to understand why this site was given 4 stars by some reviewers, but if your expectation is a basic, outdoor camp, then I guess this might be in the top range. However, it fell well below our expectations, but as a stopover to shower, sleep and top up with water, it fulfilled the purpose.

Being camping lovers we have a very particular list of needs for our camping holidays. This ticked all boxes....quiet, friendly relaxed atmosphere, countryside, pool, trampolines, some activities, entertainment, etc. The terraced pitches are well thought through, private and comfy. And, properly dark at night...no artificial street lamp light...so if you want to spend hours gazing at the stars you actually can. An added bonus with access to horse riding lessons and more on site...great for the kids. This site is really good...so good, we have booked to return next year.

My wife and I did loads of research into campsites in this area. This one, with a write up in the latest edition of “Cool Camping” caught our eye. We’ve used the book loads and stayed on a number of their campsites. I contacted the owner at the beginning of June and she duly booked us in for nine nights. I looked on Facebook and the “new pool” appeared ready for use. Fantastic! When we arrived after a very long journey, the story looked a little different. The pitch that we chose needed to be mowed before we could put our tent up, meaning that we were living among the damp grass cuttings. The campsite is doubtless in a lovely spot. There is more road noise than you might think but it’s a great view. The gravel roads leading up to the wash house have been eroded by recent heavy rains and in some places they are washed away. The back exit gate is virtually impassable- I’m not sure why a bag of gravel or two couldn’t be popped in the crack in the earth! The pool simply wasn’t complete, or anyway near. Marianne informed us we could use it, but it is a pool in the middle of a building site. It was cordoned off and there were guys working on it during the day. Totally unacceptable and when we spoke to the owner, she gave no apology and merely informed us that it should have been finished in March but clearly had run on considerably. The wash block is ok but left drenched when cleaned. No sign of loo roll in the dispenser during our three days. This site is pretty but unkempt. It feels unloved and needs some time and money spending on it. I like shabby chic but not just shabby. We left. We paid up for our wasted time and moved to another site. A disappointing few days that would have been avoided if Marianne had informed us that the pool was nowhere near usable.

Response from Marianne H, Owner at Domaine d'Esperbasque
Responded 2 July 2018
Hi Nick, I'm truly sorry that your stay wasn't like you expected. We started this year with unusual amounts of rain, maintenance on the campsite and building projects were massively delayed, the pool was no exception with 3 month delay. Start of June, the forecast was perfect and we were expecting to finish the pool within a week or two. June 13, we had 1,5 months of rain concentrated over 24 hours, our town Salies de Béarn ended up under 2m of water (First time in history. You'll find plenty of videos on the internet). The campsite is on a hill so wasn't hit as bad as Salies, but you've seen it took more time than expected to restore everything back to normal, sorry you had to witness that. I hope the rest of your holiday was perfect and we took note of the other details you mentioned, we're always trying to improve and keep everyone happy. Marianne

This is just what we always look for ....something different. Great owner , very clean facilities , spacious pitches , beautiful views. The only thing that Marianne could not do for us is stop tthe rain so after one night in our Campervan we booked into the most beautiful apartment Beatrice in her Manor House. That was just wow ... undoubted grandeur.

Lovely location and friendly owners and staff. We were welcomed with complimentary drinks in the bar. We stayed for a few days in August 2017 and had a very relaxed and enjoyable time. The camping pitches are a decent size and well laid out. The bar is great and open late (our kids loved the wifi access)...would really recommend the local Rose wine. If you likes horses and ponies you will be in your element....the riding school is very popular. A few things could be improved....having to estimate your toilet roll requirements before you go to your cubicle is a little odd....and some hand-washing soap in the basins would be handy. The swimming pool is busy on hot days and needs a little investment. Apart from these little things...we cant fault it....

We had originally booked to stay for 5 nights with our kids and friends and their children who we were travelling with and ended up extending by a further 3 nights as it was so beautiful and relaxing. Lovely, lovely staff, fab bar, loads of activities and food on offer and just a gorgeous rustic site. Loads for kids to do and the surrounding area is beautiful too. Will definitely be back!

Nothing was too much trouble for Marianne and her staff who do everything to make your stay enjoyable; the welcome drink was a nice touch! Plenty of bathroom facilities - none of us had to queue at all during a 12 night stay. Keep an eye on the noticeboard for details of activities and hot food options. It takes a bit longer to reach the coast than you might think but this is due to congestion towards Biarritz (and the beaches to the north) so bear this in mind if you are primarily wanting to be near to the sea. However, we stayed in August and outside school holidays the journey would take under one hour. Overall, this is a lovely rural campsite with views over vineyards yet conveniently located within easy reach of the A64 motorway. The town of Salies de Bearn is not to be missed as it is quite beautiful.

I have just returned from a wonderful short break here. I travelled alone to visit someone but I can’t wait to return with my family for a holiday. This place offers a range of activities (more in the season) combined with a truly relaxing atmosphere. For my family the main attraction will be the horse riding available on site and the chance to help with the horses as well as ride. I am not a confident rider but they have horses to suit all capabilities so I enjoyed two rides through the most beautiful countryside set against views of the snow-capped Pyrenees. Perfect for long walks too. The nearby towns of Salies and Sauveterre are lovely – especially with their ‘Producers Markets’ where you meet the people who have the local farms or make the cheeses etc. There were lively little bars with locals meeting for coffee and chats sitting outside in the autumn sunshine. I stayed in the ‘Grande Maison’ which is a lovely, characterful old house with lots of interesting, antique furniture and details. It has the feel of an authentic country house rather than somewhere that has been converted for tourists. My room was spacious and comfortable with an area to sit and read/eat. It had its own small kitchen too so I could buy local produce and cook – which for me is always a pleasure. There was a little terrace too so I could sit outside and read. Marianne is very helpful and welcoming and has plenty advice about the area if you want it. A wonderful place to stay.

As other reviewers have said, the site is very laid back, mainly Dutch (not a bad thing), leading to a very relaxing holiday. There are areas on site which could do with a lick of paint e.g the pool area, which wouldnt detract from the overall image, but would be a bit cleaner. Bar area great, Marriane very friendly and helpful, and horseriding/stables for the kids is fantastic. Our youngest (2) developed an obsession with the horses that still continues! Overall we loved our week stay.

My wife and I, along with our 4 boys, have recently returned from a 7 nights stay at Domaine d'Esperbasque in our motorhome. We arrived at Domaine d'Esperbasque totally frazzled and with a completely empty diesel tank, after enduring a 50 hour, 1200 mile drive from southern Scotland, experiencing some epic thunderstorms en route. Serendipity brought us to this far flung corner of France. We hadn't made any holiday plans until a week prior to departure due to having to cancel holiday arrangements at the last moment over the previous 3 years - we didn't want to tempt fate again. We had tried some of the coastal sites further north but our requested dates weren't available so, unsure if the driving would be too much, I merely made an enquiry on Domaine d'Esperbasque's website to find out if our dates were available. In return we received a very welcoming email from Marianne, announcing that we were booked, wishing us a good journey and with the hope of seeing us soon! Maybe something had been lost in translation. We hummed and hawed a bit but eventually thought 'what the hell' and set about booking the ferry, etc. On arrival at the campsite we were immediately struck by the very laid back, casual atmosphere of our surroundings. It was like entering an overgrown, rustic farm steading crossed with a cottage garden. Reception was next to the indoor riding arena in the small, very relaxed, slightly haphazard and quirky bar area. We found Marianne amidst a throng of Dutch children, midway through that evening's talent competition. It shouldn't surprise you, given Marianne's nationality, that Domaine d' Esperbasque is very popular with Dutch campers and, indeed, Dutch registered cars made up the majority of vehicles parked around the site during our stay. From a British point of view this turned out to be a great thing as all of the Dutch people that we met spoke excellent English and were very friendly and helpful. Marianne was very welcoming and directed us to our pitch. When asked when she would like to be paid she gave a shrug of her shoulders and with a wave of her hand said "och, we'll sort that out tomorrow"! Our motorhome is a fairly large 6 berth coachbuilt, big enough to accommodate our 4 children but, unfortunately, wasn't particularly suited to the pitch we were allocated. The track into our pitch was lined with straggly shrubs and trees with low hanging branches and, though very pretty, this meant slow, careful manoeuvering to avoid damage to the van. Once parked up we found that the potable water tap next to us didn't work, our electric cable, despite being 30 feet long, didn't quite reach the power socket and when we eventually found the chemical toilet emptying point it was a considerable trek away. Those with tents will be wondering what the big deal is! Well... motorhoming is really camping for softies and, in my opinion, we tend to be a lazier bunch. You get used to being able to drive to a service point to empty out your grey water tank and the toilet cassette then refill your freshwater tank with 100 litres of water. None of this is really possible on this site due to the location of the various services and the narrowness of the tracks leading to them - in fact I didn't find a drive-over, grey water emptying point on the site. This isn't a huge problem however as there are motorhome service points in the beautiful nearby towns of Salies-de-Bearn and Sauveterre-de-Bearn. It shouldn't be an issue either for couples or those with a smaller, younger family. The facilities that were available on the site though; the toilets and showers, were modern and were kept very clean. Slightly irritated by one or two of these things though and a bit cranky after the long drive, we headed to the bar to see if any food was available. On reaching the bar I was amused to see quite a number of adults sitting in the terrace area outside the bar with their heads down, staring at the screens of various mobile phones and tablets whilst their children were all running around having a great time. This, it turned out, was because of the free WiFi available there and this is obviously a great ploy to help sell lots of beer! There wasn’t officially food available but Marianne’s son – Rene, very kindly made us all a round of croque-monsieur, which was most welcome considering how tired we were, he then introduced us to the beers that he brews in the next door barn. The one I tried that night; a wheat beer, was spiced up with the heat from chilli peppers and was really excellent. Over the course of the week I tried his other brews that were ready, finding them all very (too) good and I’m now kicking myself for not taking a few bottles home! Anyway, this began to relax us and we finally began to feel as though we were on holiday. That night however, it began to rain. In the morning the grass area that we were parked on had become a bit muddy and slippery which made turning and driving out from the pitch very difficult, especially as the ground was slightly rutted and narrow. We decided that as we would be leaving the site every day to go on day trips we would have to request a different pitch more suited to the motorhome. Marianne was very helpful when asked and gave us a gravel surfaced pitch just off the main track through the site with better access to water and electricity (though Rene had offered us an extension cable). This was a better solution but not quite perfect as we still wanted to erect a drive away awning for the kids to sleep in and the parking space was too stony to do this. Marianne came up with a good compromise, letting us pitch the awning as a separate tent on the grass on the other side of the track, above the pool. This worked out very well and as soon as we were able to erect the awning and get unpacked we finally relaxed completely and could get on properly with the business of being on holiday. Over the next few days we had a thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing time taking in the picturesque surroundings of the campsite and it’s laidback (bordering on horizontal) ambiance. From waking in the morning and strolling down to the bar terrace to buy fresh croissants and other delicious goodies from the baker that visits the site every day, to the late evening, watching the sunset over the hills whilst drinking one of Rene's brews, Domain d'Esperbasque is a very tranquil, chilled place to stay. One evening was particularly enjoyable as a local musician played a guitar and sang late into the night, accompanied and then followed by one of Marianne’s staff on the piano (sorry I didn’t get your name - dark haired chap, midway through an engineering course, very friendly and helpful). During the day there are plenty of things to do. A lot of people come to the site specifically to go horse riding and for riding lessons. If horse riding isn't your thing though there are other organized activities you can take part in or you can just have a splash about in the pool. If you prefer to explore the local area then the site is ideally situated for exploring the Pyrenees or for a trip to the beach, both less than an hour away. Northern Spain is also easily reached and one regret is that we didn't have more time to explore San Sebastien (take a bike if you do, there are bike paths and bikes everywhere). There are of course plenty of local markets to visit and the small, weekly farmers market a short walk away from the campsite had plenty of tasty, locally produced treats on offer and was especially good if you love pâté and cheese. The site was perfect for the kids too. It felt very safe and they had a great time left to their own devices to make new friends with the other kids, with them all hanging out together late into the evening on the trampolines adjacent to the bar terrace. Prepaid soft drinks vouchers could be purchased for them at a discount (same for alcohol – though not for kids!) to enable the kids to buy their own drinks and have a bit of independence. Regarding the campsite - If I was looking to improve anything then I would like to see a few, easier to access, dedicated pitches for larger campervan/motorhomes with the room to erect an awning, free from overhanging branches and with easier access to water (and please, drinking water taps not adjacent to chemical toilet emptying points - us Brits are a bit squeamish about that!) but I suppose motorhomers probably aren't Marianne's main target market. However, that would be all, with everything else being pretty perfect for us. Based on our subjective experience and how we felt at the end of our stay at Domaine d'Esperbasque I'd give the whole experience 5 stars. I would add however that the laid back style might not be to everyone's liking, especially those with motorhomes looking for space and proper facilities but I think for those with tents or caravans then the site is pretty idyllic. :)
