Booked the hotel during the Sakura season. Rates at that time were exorbitant. Rooms are really really tiny. Bed really just good for one and didn't have a good night rest during my stay. No place to put luggage. Staff are nice and microwave and laundry facilities available at the lobby. Location is good though, very near the train station and lots of dining and shopping places. Unlikely to return due to the size of the rooms.

Thank you for staying at Smile Hotel Tokyo Asagaya. The guest rooms are of average size for a business hotel, with semi-double rooms of 13.5 square meters and twin rooms of 18.2 square meters. Furthermore, regarding accommodation rates, we have introduced a variable rate system that matches the market price in the surrounding area. We apologize for the inconvenience caused during your trip, but we would be grateful if you could understand the above-mentioned situation regarding the size of the room and the accommodation fee. All of our staff will continue to strive to provide better facilities and services. We would like to thank our customers for their continued patronage of the Smile Hotel Chain. Like most Japanese hotels its small and simple but for the price and location you can't beat it.

The staff are friendly, very helpful in giving my directions with the infamous Tokyo rail system.
The room itself was very clean and neat not much else to say about it really just small and neat and meets all the basic needs especially for a solo traveller, or couple.

To get there just get on the Orange line from Tokyo station (chou rapid) which is express to Asagaya or get the local line which is yellow and stops all stations to Asagaya. Personally i always got the orange express, the only problem is is doesn't always stop at Asagaya . Once your on look at the screen if Asagaya is not highlighted, just get off and get the next one.

Once at Asagaya station head to the south exit down the 2 flights of stairs, turn right and head towards starbucks....turn right at starbucks and just go straight then u can't miss it.

The area around Asagaya is great too...FULL of great little places to eat in the evening and little bars, i HIGHLY recommend a little place called the Jazz room, or crazy chicken i am not really sure of the name but its just next to the smile hotel...the food is THE BEST and the service amazing..if stay at the smile hotel again JUST so i can eat at that place every night

Oh and don't worry about the train station being so near....i could barely hear it anytime of day or night....its totally fine.

Price:
I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. The rate was good already when compared to other hotels in Tokyo. Afterall, it's Tokyo not Bangkok :p it was my first time to Japan. I wanted to stay budget, so this hotel was a good choice and I was not worried about the quality before checking in coz Japan is famous for its cleanliness and safety.
JR/ metro transport:
This hotel is at Agsagaya station, about 6 stations from Shinjuku. If I remember right, it costs about ¥160 between the 2 stations. Whereever I go, i always go to Shinjuku first as a hub. The JR line is Chuo line (中央線). This line has normal and express version. Express version skips a few stations. However, I always don't know which ones are gonna be skipped. Since Asagaya is a "minor" station, it might be skipped, so I would recommend not to take the express version when u r going back to the hotel, so as not to miss your station. Reversely, when u r leaving for Shinjuku, express version is a good time-saving choice since Shinjuku will never be skipped.
Hotel location:
The hotel is literally next to the JR track. You can see the hotel big smiley sign from the platform (actually my room window is right in front of the platform) The hotel is about 5 mins walking distance from either north or south gate of the JR station. If leaving from north gate, turn left and walk about 500m until end of the street, turn left again, after about 20m , the hotel should be on your left. If you are leaving from south gate, turn right, walk along the alley or walk into the JR mall corridor for 500m, the hotel should be on the right of the alley or on the left of the mall coorridor. Easily accessible.
Surroundings:
Loadsssss of food stores around the hotel. Regret that I do not speak Japanese, otherwise I could try those local restaurants. I did try one 居酒屋with my secret key : zuyimasei > body language
> arigato gazai ma su :D I had great time!
Opposite to JR south gate is asagayanami, a walking street with various choices of restaurant and other shops. There is one snack shop which is quite cheap with wide range of snacks, good choice for souvenir shopping. Besides, there are a few drugstores which ladies can enjoy buying cosmetics!!
Room:
I stayed at the smallest single room type( I guess). It is literally just a half-twin bed with a corridor to put your luggage on the rack. As a standard sized Asian girl, I am satisfied with the room size. The bathroom is like a small capsule with a deep but small bathtub. you can sit but not lay down in it. Refillable big bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel are provided. Toothpaste and brush is provided too. Oh ya, sleepers and hairdryer are provided as well.
One point to note, they initially assigned a smoking room for me, luckily they could change me a non- smoking one.The strong smell at smoking room was unbearable. Better mention your request when a booking is placed.
Although the hotel is neighbouring the JR track, i think the sound insulation is good. However, I am never a sensitive person and am always like dead when I sleep, so not sure if you should take my advice on this:p
Service:
House keeping is quite clean. The FO ppl is nice too. When I checked in, it was at night and I was too tired. I left my iPad at the counter, they kept it for me and return to me when I go back, so touching coz the iPad means a lot to me! Other than that, there's actually not much service encounter.

First off, I want to remind everyone that the room sizes in these kinds of hotels are just enough for those travelers who only need a a place to sleep after a long day of exploring. Why in the hell do you need a big room when you only need a bed to sleep in? If you want a big room, spend a lot and book a five star hotel. Now that that's out of the way, Smile is an absolute gem! Great (i do mean great as it's really near the station) location and it has everything a weary tourist needs. A bed, bath and breakfast to boot. A steal in my opinion.

Stayed here for 5 nights. Asagaya has lots of restaurants especially in the local covered mall. There is also a good supermarket at the station. Smile hotel is a typical Japanese business hotel close to Asagaya station (5 minutes). I had a single room on the opposite side to the train tracks and did not hear any train noise. Rooms are compact, beds comfortable, A/C, TV(not cable), clean compact bathroom and laundry for guests on first floor. There is a microwave in the lobby that you can use to heat up meals. Main access to Asagaya is via the Chūō-Sōbu Line, 12 minutes by train from Shinjuku station . Express trains to Shinjuku are often crowded, however local train that stops all stations does not take long and is often not so crowded. French bakery in the train station was a good breakfast spot. Staff at hotel are helpful and friendly.

Easy access from Narita airport. Room is clean but a little bit small(single room). I bought already-cooked meal from nearby supermarket for dinner and sometimes have a drink at the japanese-style bar near the hotel. There's a street with many shops near the station where you can buy almost everthing(craft, sweets, giftshop, secondhand bookstore, drugstore supermaket, etc...) From Asagaya station, you can use underground train(Tozai line) or JR(Chuo line) to go to center Tokyo within 7min. The housekeeper will clean the room at 11am. Front staff will call to ask the permission if you don't put the "Do Not Disturb" sign at the door. Internet signal is quite good and Wi-fi at lobby.

- Walk along the shopping street near the station. There are many interesting shops.
- Nakano station also have shopping street and many restaurants. "Mandarake" might be your heaven if you love anime, game and model.
- Very easy to go to "Ghibli Museum", please buy the ticket from Lawson near the hotel.
- If you come in Autumn, I recommend Takao Mt. and Tama Zoo.

I stayed at Smile Hotel Asagaya for a night, having made the booking through jalan.net. Asagaya station is about 5 stations away from Shinjuku JR station. The hotel is just next to Asagaya station, you can see the big smiley face from the station platform which is really helpful if you're looking for the general direction of the hotel.

I didn't have any noise problems (I'm a light sleeper) even though the hotel is just next to the station platform, so I think the hotel did a pretty good job with sound insulation. I stayed in a single room, which is pretty spacious for 1 person. (The door is auto-lock, but there's a note alerting guests to use the latch lock too.) It had a single bed and a long corridor where you can put your luggage on the foldable luggage rack. The bathroom is pretty narrow though, with a deep bathtub and toiletries available. The room doesn't look very modern but it was very clean. The bed wasn't very comfortable, and the pillow was flat and provided no neck support. No wi-fi available, but you can rent LAN cables for free, and laptop rentals at 500yen/day. There are 2 free channels where you can get English movies (if you're lucky). You can watch pay-per-view TV for 1000yen for a day (I think).

There are tons of restaurants/izakaya around the hotel, and too bad I didn't get the chance to visit them as I went to Smile Hotel only to sleep for the night. At Asagaya station, there is a small station mall where you can find a convenient store and bakeries. Around the station there are a few other food and shopping areas.

This hotel will be perfect for solo travelers because of the price, though you'll have to travel to and from a central station (Shinjuku).

Room is pretty decently small and they have a small bathtub in it. but the bad thing is that there are no washing machine services available to wash your clothes like other hotels i've been to in Japan. But that wasn't the highlight of it all. On my second day there, I left my room at about 2 pm and the room service attendants told me there will not be any room service avaible for the day since they finish at 11am. So i thought it's fine since I dont prefer attendants coming in while im not around. But when I came back to my room at the end of the day, it was unlock and my belongings are left out open. I did realized my trash bin was cleared so this proves that the attendant did entered my room without a heads up. I spoke to the reception about this but they couldn't do anything about it and they barely understand english. I was furious. The next day, i checked out earlier than stated and find myself another hotel. And I also end up missing some of my souvenirs bought. Bad experience and I don't recommend this hotel to any tourist. Especially if you have alot of luggage and plus the area is dodgy and quiet at night. Plus, the Rapid train track is just outside my window. Just imagine the noise me and my partner has to endure every night. What a disappointment!

Great location for drinkers! Japanese izakaya, western cafe, you name it. Even for those after Thai spicy stuff this is it.
Along with tiny, little fringe benefit is just a few minutes ‘ walk away from a JR station.
Not nice for drivers, tho. Don’t expect a parking lot under 2,500 yen overnight.

For the pretty high price the rooms are dated and feel old, a bit dirty and noisy. There is only one elevator and no stairs, so when are large group is checking in, you have to wait in line to go to your room. At one point the airconditioning started to blow only hot air, so our room turned into a sauna. When turned off it made a sqeeky noise and still was activated. The employee said it was due to the old room and it could go away, or not. No other sollution was offered and it ruined our last night in Tokyo. The only good point is the location.
