I had to write an exam in Tokyo at Temple University (Japan campus). I specifically looked for a hotel that was conveniently located for me to take the exam early in the morning. I picked Hotel Fukudaya for the convenience but was wow'd overall.

The people working at the reception were all very friendly. I speak Japanese so check-in was pretty smooth but I saw a lot of other foreigners and they could generally communicate in English with them.

My room was quite small with tatami floor. I had a large window and my own private access to a toilet. Didn't have a shower in my room, but had access to a bath (you lock it so you have sole access for that period of time). It was pretty cold in Tokyo at that time but the air conditioner heated the (small) room just fine.

There are no elevators but they will help you with your luggage if you are staying on the upper floor.

They held onto my luggage after I checked out and I came back for it later. I only had them hold onto it for a few hours, but I believe they can hold onto it for even a few days.

Can't imagine having to stay here again since it's not the most convenient for tourists and I won't be needing to take the exam again. You have to walk quite a distance from the nearest JR station (uphill too). But it was a very comfortable stay.

This is a great budget hotel near a cool neighborhood (Shibuya). It's a small place, and offers both Western style and Japanese style rooms. We slept in a Japanese style room and really liked it. It was pretty spacious. There was a sitting room and a separate room with the futons. The staff is wonderful--very friendly and helpful, though their English was limited. I would stay there again, though after 3 days we got tired of the 15-minute walk into the center of Shibuya.

My family of 3 adults stopped for 2.5 days in Tokyo on our way from Montreal to Thailand as a small gesture of solidarity with the Japanese people. We booked a triple room with bath Japanese-style for 2 nights.
From Narita airport we took the Airport Limousine Bus to Cerulian Hotel in Shibuya at 18:30, we could have walked to Fukudaya hotel from there, but as it was raining and the sky was getting dark and with all the luggage, we've decided to take a taxi and it costs 740 yen as stated in the hotel web site. You better print the map and the address in Japanese of the hotel (from its web site) and show it to the taxi driver, that will definitely help him/her to locate the hotel. But afterwards, we always walk from/to the hotel to/from the Shibuya station along the Tamagawa dori (or RTE-246) and Dogenzaka dori (dori means street). The walk is pleasant and it takes about 10 to 15 mins depending on your pace and charges. My son spent a lot of time taking pictures of the crossing at the Shibuya station near the Hachio statute. You get a very good view of the crossing from the window on the 2nd floor of the Starbucks at that corner.
We arrived at the hotel around 18:40 and were greeted by 2 very lovely and helpful ladies. We got a very clean room with all 3 futons set. When we told them that we will go to Shinjuku station, they gave us the code to the door so that we can stay out late, and they volunteer to lend us the umbrellas as it kept raining as well as the maps .... The next morning we met the owner of the inn and this gentleman speaks English very well. He is also as nice as the 2 ladies.

The hotel is in a very good location. Apart from the surrounding areas of the Shibuya station, from there you can walk to Yoyogi Olympic Stadium, Yoyogi Parc, Meiji shrine, Harajuku station, Takeshita dori (the shopping street of young people), Omotesando dori, and Aoyama dori. Just the location is worth the price. The owner and staff are all friendly, nice and helpful, asnd the room is kept clean. As their first visit to Japan, my wife and my son really enjoyed the stay in this hotel and we would certainly come back again.

I do not understand how this hotel is so well rated on Tripadvsor. The only positive things I can say about this hotel is that the staff was friendly, in particular the very nice manager. However, this hotel is, at best, a dirty and outrageously expensive 2 star stay for backpackers and certainly not a 3 star hotel/ryokan. We had booked a Japanese style family room for 4 with western bathroom. The room was tiny; the tatamis were stained in several places, the bed linen was clean but very very worn (frazzled pillow case, small holes in duvet cover); the towels were old and paper thin (one of them dirty); the tatamis were stained in several places, We had to ask for an extra reading lamp as the room was only provided with one which was incidentally half broken (seriously thick layer of dust on the 25 W bulb). The worst part was the very dirty bathroom: there was abundant black mildew all over the window sill, window, shampoo and soap dispenser, shower curtain rail and under the toilet seat . We were treated to two used soaps left by previous clients which were" glued" into a dirty soap dish, but there was no new soap for us to wash our hands with. The white cover of the toilet paper holder had suspicious brown looking fingerprints on it. When we opened the Japanese window screens in our room, we saw that the glass window sills were also generously covered with the same black mold found in the bathroom. All this for the stunning price of 180€ per night ... We left as soon as we could. Location is not impressive either: a brisk 20 minutes walk to Shibuya station. During our two week stay in Japan, we stayed in several hotels in the same price range, however, for this price, we got 4 and 4.5* clean and modern hotels with excellent to outstanding service... Check out the Century Southern Tower and the Niwa in Tokyo: outstanding places in the same price range!

Response from hotelfukudaya, オーナー at Hotel Fukudaya
Responded 18 May 2012
We are very sorry that you felt uncomfortable in your stay due to lack of our much care taken of the room. And we sincerely accept your valuable comments and soon began to improve several service points as indicated, such as: * the reading lamp was repaired. * the Tatami in the room where you stayed have been ordered to be newly replaced. * toilet soaps placed in the bath rooms are all replaced by soap dispensers. * pillow covers, face towels and others are gradually renewed after checkups. Additionally, as in the past, the Front Desk are ready to cope well with any matters as much as possible, if it is not satisfactory. We intend to make careful cleaning and to conduct periodic check so that our guests can stay comfortably at Hotel Fukudaya. About the room charge as referred to, 180 Euro is applicable to 4 persons in one room per night (virtually, 45 Euro per person per night) that is our best offered rate at the moment.

Stayed at the lovely traditional Japanese room with bath in it, i admire the cleanliness of the hotel and the family feel exudes from it. It's 15 minutes walk from Shibuya station, yet you'll be easily distracted by the lively strip of Dogenzaka with its endless neon-light buildings at the epicenter of Shibuya! Or you could take a pleasant bus from Shibuya station, it take merely 2 stops. The hip Daikanyama area is also nearby, the area is packed with branded outlets, terrific restaurants and an artistic Tsutaya Books Store at Daikanyama T-site Garden!

The owner speaks good English, he also advised me how to get to Haneda Airport by taking the Airport Limousine bus from Shibuya Mark City, which saved me a lot from the expensive taxi fare.

Hotel Fukudaya is a no frills roakan style hotel, budget at its finest. My room was right next to the lobby, so I had to listen to the front door beeping all day and into the night when people entered. My room smelled like green tea and dirty feet. The first morning I was there I was woken up by a phone call at 10:50 am telling me, not asking me, that it was time to clean my room. I did not appreciate being woken up like this. They are not flexible on the check out time, its a mandatory 10 am. I would not stay here the next time I come to Tokyo.

They called me after I reserve on imternet, telling me that the room is full because of simultaneous online booking on the internet. They onesidedly telling me that the room is not abailable.

They do not talk anything on booking fee I already pay online (10%).

This is worst experience on booking-trouble I have ever encountered in Japan.

I evaluate 3 in cleanness, location and room because I cannot evaliate. The service, value and overall evaluation for me is1, because they cannot manage their reservation system.

This is a Japan traditional style room and clean, price for this hotel is really cheap compare to other accommodations in Shibuya area. Although it is not really near to JR station (about 15~20 minute walk across the Shibuya shopping street).

I stayed in the Hotel Fukudaya in March 2016 for two nights. It's a ryokan style hotel located about fifteen minutes walk from Shibuya Station. The hotel is located on a quiet side street and is surprisingly peaceful considering how close it is to the hustle and bustle of Shibuya.

Upon my arrival I was greeted by a friendly and helpful older Japanese man who seemed to be the owner. He was very helpful and informative and appeared to have a lot of time for his guests.

My room was a double room. It was clean and spacious and decorated in the traditional ryokan style with tatami flooring and sliding doors. It had a small bath tub and air conditioning. A futon is laid out on the floor in the evening for sleeping, which I found quite comfortable however, those of you with a bad back or mobility issues might find it difficult.

The hotel also has some vending machines, complimentary umbrellas, free Wifi & a machine that gives out free coffee, water or green tea.

Location wise, it's quite good. There's a bus from Shibuya station if your feet are tired but it's only a fifteen minute walk from the station. I had no problem finding the place but I had working internet and google maps so it might be a little bit tricky trying to find your way there without that as it's a little bit out of the way.

There's plenty of places to eat around Shibuya and the general area and also there's at least three convenience stores within a few minutes walk of the hotel. Being Japan, there's also plenty of vending machines nearby.

Since Hotel Fukudaya is done in the style of a Ryokan it is a shame there isn't an Onsen to relax in at the end of the day. After a long day marching around Tokyo it would have been most welcome.

The staff were friendly and helpful although I had one negative experience with a guy who was working there in the evening. He wasn't Japanese and I got the feeling he didn't enjoy working there. I asked him could he print a boarding pass for me and he snapped that "He was very busy" even though I was the only guest around at the time. I told him it didn't matter I'd find some other way to do it. He then changed his mind and reluctantly printed off the e-mail. Which took all of 4 seconds effort. He seemed really annoyed that I had asked him to do this and didn't say a word when I thanked him.

Asides from that, I had a pleasant experience staying in the Fukudaya Hotel. It is in a great location and is excellent value.

I stayed in Hotel Fukudaya with two other friends for 5 nights in Tokyo. It was a great experience - the staff were pleasant, the rooms clean and made every day, the Japanese style futon an experience and nice and warm.

We enjoyed ourselves here. It was only about 5min to the main street of Shibuya with lots of restaurants and shops, and then another 10min to the metro, so very convenient. You could also jump on a bus to the station (we never worked out which bus ran the opposite direction!). We really enjoyed the Shibuya location and walking through the streets there.
I would definitely stay here again.

Guess you should reach about 2130hrs which they are fine as I also reached there around there the last time. Depending on your room type, you may need to climb up couple of floors. Oh, it may take you up to 15-20 min to walk from Shibuya station to the hotel. Get your Google map ready. Have fun!

Rooms are lockable from inside and outside, and they handle you key for your room. Doors are like any normal wooden door.
