We were moved to the Trails Lodge due to the activities sessions already booked into the Safari Lodge. Having read about the Trails Lodge it seemed lovely but I was a bit nervous of its isolation. If you have similar concerns don't let them stop you. It is sheer paradise. Set halfway up a hill the Eco lodges blend into...

What a wonderful place. Chana our ranger brought the whole thing to life. The hospitality of all the staff was exceptional. The reserve is in a stunning location. We had a great room, number 1. But they all look like good options. It was a privilege to have experienced this.

What a fabulous experience. The lodge is stunning. The tents, if you can call them that are spacious and have everything you could possibly need. This is different from big safaris. It is a much more intimate experience. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen here. You might not see large herds of animals but you see everything much...

A little about us: We are a recently married couple on our honeymoon, with no children. We love animals and enjoy a mixture of activities from relaxing with a book and a beer, and exploring new places, to having a good night out on the town and getting involved in adrenaline sports such as skydiving. What we were hoping for...

We (my wife and 10 years old son) stayed at Marataba Safari lodge a few days ago as part of a wider tour of South Africa. Marataba was our first stop, and what an experience it was. The reserve is absolutely beautiful and the landscape is breath taking. The lodge in itself is well designed, respects its environment and very...

We had a wonderful stay at this great lodge. The surroundings were beautiful. We saw many animals, ranging from small (like the captivating dung beetle) to large. The ranger was great: funny and knowledgable. It is a great place to visit with children (9 and 13). They made my daugther's birthday very special.

We have just returned from Marataba and I can highly recommend this lodge. We were a family of four (children aged 11 & 13) and stayed for 5 nights. We were successful in sighting the 'Big 5' along with many other mammals, birds, and insects. We also appreciated learning about the many plants in the area. As this is a...

Stunning! We absolutely loved Marataba. It's truly a special place and we hope to make it back some day soon. Hopefully you are lucky enough to spend your day with Ralf the Ranger or your evenings with Clive-manager, sommelier & story teller!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Marataba is a malaria-free 23000 hectare private concession within the Big5 Marakele National Park (Limpopo, South Africa). Just four hours from Johannesburg, this is a sanctuary where busy people can find themselves again by connecting with nature. We were rendered breathless by the dramatic Waterberg mountains, vast plains, rich animal diversity and winding rivers cutting through the landscape of the Marakele National Park. Rich red mountain rock meets lush green plains (where you will find yellowwood and cedar trees, 5m high cycads and tree ferns). All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here. Marataba Safari Lodge is a simple extension of the natural environment beyond its walls - rich, bold, organic and patently magnificent. Whether you prefer your own company or that of new-found friends, there are a number of spots from which to soak up the view - hammock, pool lounger or grassy patch. On the menu for your pleasure is a smorgasbord of activities from which to choose. Whether game drive, walking trail, sunset river excursion on Miss Mara, or a private dinner for two, there is never enough time to exhaust the many ways there are to love this place. ... more   less
