Nestled in a serene and isolated location, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama, garners acclaim for its luxurious ambiance and spacious, modern rooms that boast comfort and luxury touches. While guests consistently praise the hotel's cleanliness and diverse amenities, including the pools and beach access, some caution that the service can be slow at times and certain amenities may need updating.
Despite being seen as somewhat overpriced, particularly in dining, the professional and warm service often makes up for the cost, ensuring a peaceful getaway.

Detailed Reviews
My daughter and I visited the Ritz during half term— the concierge was great about liaising with the tennis instructors and setting up her lessons as well as making sure that there was always a shuttle to get us to the lesson on time. Breakfast buffet was very nice with several different restaurant options. Lots of pools, though my daughter ended mostly liking the children’s pool with other kids with the exception of the few times we made it to the beach. Even though the beach is man made, there were ample lounge chairs provided for Ritz Carlton guests (be aware there also may be locals at the beach), the sand was soft (not rocky so you can sit on a towel if necessary) and the water was clear. There is also food and drink service on the beach for guests who have a valid room number. While my daughter was in kids club during some of the days, I took advantage of the spa, which was also very nice and I had several treatments there. I also tried the Michelin starred restaurant MB which was delicious, the staff were quite gracious and eager to please. If I were to go back (which is very likely), I would definitely ask to stay in the main hotel versus the villas, as it’s easier with children, less of a walk and less reliance on hotel golf carts to get around. Be aware the property is quite big. Overall an excellent stay and not too far and an easy trip from the UK.

We were thrilled to arrive at the Ritz Carlton Abama’s airy lobby in late July as we had resigned ourselves to a staycation in the UK. We knew when we booked flights to Tenerife that we were taking a risk and sure enough, just as we were checking in, we heard that the UK government had just, unexpectedly, imposed a 14 day quarantine for travellers returning from Spain, the Canaries included.
There was nothing to be done, so we resigned ourselves to enjoying our 10 days in Tenerife which we very much did, with huge thanks to the hard-working and always cheerful staff of this large hotel. They all made us so very welcome that it was almost – if not entirely – possible to forget the travails of lockdown and the ongoing dramas of Covid-19.
Patently, the hotel was not operating as it should in normal times. Many fellow guests were regular visitors and they all urged us to return when things were back to normal as they were all devoted to the hotel. We could see that things would feel a little different when occupancy was at normal levels but the hotel had done everything possible to make our stay pleasurable and memorable.
As we had not been before, it was difficult for us to compare. The site itself is stunning, beautifully landscaped with fabulous Atlantic views. Our villa room was scrupulously clean, comfortable and spacious, with a huge bathroom and lovely quality linen and towels.
The pool in our villa block was never crowded and our days spent there were greatly enlivened by our lifeguard, Noelia, a truly lovely local lady who chatted away, with tips about the island, looked out for our little girl and made sure we never wanted for anything. She was one of a number of staff members who were simply excellent ambassadors for the resort. Her beach side colleague, Joel, was yet another.
Breakfast without the traditional buffet was always going to be frustrating but, with the exception of the weekends, when the hotel filled up with locals on staycation, the staff managed pretty well and the food, as throughout the hotel, was uniformly good – inevitably at normal, elevated, in-hotel prices? At the Mirador restaurant, Yorli, Joscelyne and Kleiver all took amazing care of us.
We tended to lunch on the beach where getting a table was often a challenge but the food from the grill was always worth waiting for. Service here was on the patchy side to be honest but always friendly and, when necessary, apologetic.
Many of the grumbles elsewhere on this site seem to a little unfair or quibbling? No buggies because of Covid? Wait for the train – or how about walking! No ketchup at Txoko Restaurant? Perhaps you would prefer McDonalds?
All in all, we were very grateful to the staff and management of the hotel for opening and operating in such strange and straitened times. We felt grateful to get a holiday at all, let alone such a relaxing and enjoyable one after months of lockdown isolation. We could see that, in normal circumstances, it would be a pretty special place – as we have frequently been told – and we will certainly return when we can! With huge thanks to everyone who looked after us. Bravo!

Located 15 minutes driving by car from the more touristic areas on the South coast of Tenerife. This beautiful hotel with lovely architecture has a private beach.
In general a little overpriced in bars and restaurants but that’s what you pay for the exclusivity. Different class of guests as well… This hotel provides all the comfort and luxury you need.
Staff is very friendly but service in some parts of the hotel could be more fluent. Sometimes it’s long waiting for ordering drinks/food at the pool, or ordering a second cappuccino during breakfast, for example. Also sun beds around the pool should be somewhat cleaner, as it should be for the restrooms at the beach and pool areas.
You will come here for holidays when you want to escape in a stylish way from the crowded touristic parts of the island and when you can afford it… and willing to take the car to go out of the hotel.

I do hope that the management may react in some way to this review. They certainly reacted with courtesy to my direct complaints but with NO action.
This hotel seems to have been of very high standard in the past. Sadly is is far from that at the moment and likely it will stay that way.It is not the type of top end establishment people would normally expect to be using the name Ritz Carlton.
It is very large and sprawling and it quite difficult just getting about and finding your way.
The standard rooms are just about adequate but some have very poor views and tiny balconies. Certainly not the luxury we were expecting at the price.
Breakfast is currently being served in a makeshift restaurant and it can be chaotic at times. Very poor by any standard.
I am told the restaurants are very good for dinner but wine is extremely expensive with the cheaper wines at about 40-45 euros being of very low quality. We made the mistake of buying one at our golfing group dinner. The meal was quite ordinary.
An average meal for two with decent wine in the normal restaurants would likely cost around 200 euros
The free wifi will not always work and we regularly had power cuts in our room. Our flat screen Smart TV would have been great but the Smart hub was not connected. The signal for some English channels often was not available.
It can be quite difficult to get a response when calling for service from the room although some of the staff try to be helpful.
Basically this is a very large hotel with many facilities. Unfortunately it is failing badly in its present form. I can only guess that the plan is for it to become mainly a hub for the large number of villas being constructed on the site. This construction is currently impacting greatly particularly on anyone playing golf on the hotel course.
Think again before booking here. Some of the better places around Costa Adeje are a much better option.

Dear Mr. Geoff and Ms. Ruth Hudds, Thank you for your honest feedback. We understand this is a large property and it maybe difficult to find one's way at times. We also believe the beautiful architecture, gardens, pools and beach make it a unique place. When booking our rooms there is a choice of room category and view category. Some have larger balconies and terraces. Please be sure you book the type of room and view which will be most suitable to you. We apologise for the emergency maintenance work in our breakfast restaurant. We offer alternative breakfast options opposite the breakfast restaurant, at the Lagoon Pool restaurant and at El Mirador if booked in a villa room. We appreciate your feedback regarding your opinion on food and beverage. We aim to provide excellent food and beverage quality in an exquisite atmosphere. We are sorry if you felt we fell short of your expectations. During your stay we experienced some internet connection disruptions which also affected some TV services. This was due to an external provider and it was solved within hours. We do apologise for the inconvenience. We are sorry you were inconvenienced by the construction at Las Terrazas de Abama when at the Abama Golf Course. We will be sharing your feedback with the golf course management. Even though the golf course is not directly managed by the hotel, we believe it is of excellent design and a top challenging course. We hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel and to make your next stay most memorable and up to your expectations. The Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Calton look forward to welcoming you back to Tenerife. With best regards, Ernesto Forner Front Desk Supervisor The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

The hotel is an oasis of calm and beauty. Very friendly staff. Beautifully designed hotel with lovely layout and impeccably kept grounds. Restaurants generally have lovely views, sone stunning and all with good food quality and vgood service. The only exception being MB, a bit of a letdown. I think our night was maybe a lapse in concentration
Allergy training is lacking so take care, generally lip service paid to this. MB the worst for this twice served nuts to a severe nut allergy guest, really not taken seriously and oddly without apology. Unusual room service charging, if you order breakfast in bed you are charged for both breakfast on top of the breakfast you have already paid on B£B terms) and a tray charge. Very nice breakfast quality however. The breakfast service I the restaurant is a bit of a bun fight with some staff stressed. Great omelettes from lovely lady chef. The majority of staff are fantastic and the Ritz Carlton service ethos shines through.
We had a fabulous sea view room with large balcony, it was very comfortable and spacious. Pool and beach service exceptional with tremendous staff, particular mention for Godfrey on the funicular to and from the beach, a charming soul.
For such a big hotel we went away feeling pampered and well cared for with great memories. We don’t expect perfection just to feel that someone cares. We have already booked again to bring our extended family so thats the proof In the pudding.

The hotel looks beautiful although it is tired. The staff are friendly but highly untrained. I don’t know if it’s the rules of the chain or this hotel but they keep you stressed throughout your stay. They lowered their prices so drastically that it’s normal to see people eating Mac Donald’s by the pool or buying groceries from supermarkets. You actually feel jelous because ordering by the pool takes 90 minutes and then they forget half your order! Imagine this with kids. The bar service by the villas (superior rooms!) will only service you alcohol from 5-6….but ordering from the main restaurant bar is like asking God for forgiveness…One Bar man rolled his eyes at me when I ordered 3 different smoothies and this was in the beginning of his work turn. Don’t hold your breath at check in and make sure you stay with them at all times, it takes 40 minutes of you don’t. The food in the main restaurants is good for a hotel, just don’t order it from your rooM or pool. The rooms curtains has holes from wear and tear and the hairdryer wouldn’t dry your hands to safe your life. I usually never write reviews but I had really high expectations of a relaxing holiday and instead I have to keep on telling myself not to answer back/not to complain and just ‘get through’ my five days here…

What has happened to this once beautiful resort.
Front desk staff are rude and unhelpful, even despite speaking to several so called managers/manageress we still felt the rude, and obnoxious attitude was carried out throughout the hotel.
Queues for everything, hold ups on everything, waiting times at restaurants, bars, buggys etc etc is not what you expect when you pay that price.
Security follow you around like you are criminal and 4 times I was stopped to give my ID and room number, in a very aggressive and rude manner. The hotel has turned into Fort Knox and it is very very off putting.
Staff in Ritz Kids especially again the so called manageress was shocking, very rude and undermining, when I asked why my children had to be separate. Silly excuse and all seems very very hostile, and uncomfortable there. Not a safe environment for children.
There are many other 5 star resorts on the island and we will certainly using them in future.
Ritz Carlton Management or head office need to take grip of this hotel before its good name is ruined forever.
I would seriously remove every manager from each department and start again with fresh, young and enthusiastic people.
Seems they have been there too long and developed uncaring and appalling costumer service skills.
Shame really as it used to be such a lovely relaxed resort with great staff and a lovely vibe.

Recently arrived at this hotel having spent much of 2020 visiting 5* hotels. This hotel is not as advertised, they’re either using Covid as an excuse or the hotel is not as described on their website. Despite the website suggesting full service, most restaurants are closed, the facilities and rooms services are very limited, no Alcohol or minbar in the hotel after 23:00 and staffing is clearly at a skeleton level. For a 5 star Hotel it just doesn’t work, it would be hard to describe how many areas they are falling short in and it seems like cash is a problem, they ask you to pay for drinks and food by card rather than put them on your room account. For a decent sized group like this it would be reasonable for them to amend their website and describe the limitation of services to allow people to decide if they would still like to visit rather than deceive people, its a shame they detract from the brand!

Response from Arianna Calcaterra, Marketing at The Ritz-carlton Tenerife, Abama
Responded 9 Nov 2020
Dear Lovluxstyle, I was saddened to learn that our services and facilities did not reflect the comfort and exceptional standards that we are known for and that your overall experience in our timeless island retreat, so far, has not met your expectations so far. I would like to take the opportunity to share with you some of the protocols we have in place during these uncertain times: - A "What to expect" landing page is shown in a banner in all pages of our website, easily detailing what facilities, cleaning protocols and changes our guests can expect during their stay - Our website is frequently updated to reflect the facilities available during a guests´ visit. This includes always on restaurants open, and dates and times. We regret if this information was misleading in someway to your expectations. - In order to guarantee high levels of safety and cleanliness, certain in-room amenities such as the Honor Bar must be requested in order to be delivered in the room according to every guest´s needs - We have introduced a web-based app where guests can make reservations for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as Spa, Ritz Kids and Fitness Centre. This app s presented upon check for our guests to discover in real time menus, activities and much more...! - In Room charges are encouraged in every venue, as long as a credit card has been added to our guests´reservation as guarantee. This is for our guests to decide upon check in, in case they want to do an express check out upon departure However, I would like to have the opportunity of discussing your concerns in person or by the phone at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to contact me through our Guests Relations Department form your room phone, or personally in the hotel´s reception. Best regards, Rafael Lopes Assistant Rooms Manager The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

We stayed for 5 nights and were looking for a quiet relaxing time during these unusual times. The check in procedure was well done and efficient and made us feel welcome. A lovely upgrade of room thanks to our Titanium Bonvoy membership was much appreciated and the location of the room meant a very short walk to the Quiet smaller pool area which was lovely. The first few days the property was very busy with lots of children but we managed to find a quiet corner most of the time. The room was comfortable and clean and housekeeping service very good, with requests made through the Hotel App for extra water being met very quickly.
Breakfast was good though busy, and the food selection was perfectly acceptable with the usual omelette station and lots of choice. Serving staff friendly and approachable.
The beach is a bus ride away but we had no problem waiting a short 5 minutes for the regular shuttle and the beach is lovely though quite busy when we were there.
The Hotel is isolated about ten minutes drive away from the nearest town, which is not very interesting anyway. We got a taxi one night to a restaurant in town but we were quite happy staying at the hotel the other nights.
Staff at the hotel were without exception delightful and went out of there way to make our stay enjoyable.
The one thing that did disappoint us was that we were unable to get restaurant reservations on any evening at the place or time we wanted. The Japanese restaurant was so full we did not manage to get a table the whole stay. We ate at all the available places apart from this and the food was excellent. It was annoying though to have ti eat when we could be fitted in rather than when we would have preferred to eat ( I recommend booking before you arrive to get the best choice! ). It made for a stressful evening the first night when everything was fully booked. Perhaps the hotel needs to review the closing of restaurants on site when the hotel its busy to increase the available tables for guests.
We had a lovely stay and would certainly return one day.

We returned to Abama after many years after our first visit and can only wonder why we did't come back sooner? After the in-room check in at the Tagor Villas we immediately immersed ourselves in the heated pool and the "let's not do anything" experience we sought. Tried not to use the buggy to work off the lovely breakfasts at El Mirador and the brilliant Joel served us local wines just before the stunning sunsets with breathtaking views over Gomera. Dining at El Mirador is delightful and we appreciated its refurbished layout and stunning views. Had a pretty disappointing evening at Kabooki, perhaps we were unlucky, but be warned about the wine prices which defy gravity! MB's wines are also high but you will get some extremely rare Tenerifian wines which you just cannot buy anywhere and are fantastic. Room service food menu good ,the bar restaurant at the Golf Club and on the beach were lovely with staff to match. In fact all the staff were welcoming and attentive. Wi-Fi and TV a bit patchy but we are on an Island in the Atlantic!
In conclusion, a very pleasant stay in a lovely location that offered a very good value option for luxury winter sun.

As i recall it depends on the restaurants. Some are later than others. Sorry I couldnt be any more of assistance
You can use HB at all the restaurants and for the two Michelin starred restaurants there was an allowance of about £70 (apologies cannot recall the exact amount) that could be set against the bill.
I’ve not been in January I’m afraid, the pool was warm enough to swim in November without heating
Not sure about the pool temp but the vegetarian restaurant at the hotel is fantastic - highly recommended
