Magical place completely off the beaten track, lit by gaslight. Cannot imagine how you would get here by public transport. Hire a car and check weather conditions. best to take your own towel and toiletries.

Lamp no Yado is one of the most romantic places that I have ever visited. It helped that at the time of our visit the forrest surrounding this inn was in full autumn colour. It helped that we were upgraded to a room in a separate annex with a view out over the waterfall. Even allowing for all of this,...

I have visited a number of ryokans and onsens and this is far and away my favorite. It is like going back to a more traditional time. All of the heat and lighting is provided by kerosene hurricane-style lamps and kerosene heaters. There is definitely a kerosene smell but it only adds to the ambiance. The rooms are plenty large...

The title says it all. Could be great, but the onsen falls a little short. Location next to a river and waterfall a few miles in from the nearest main road it very nice. Actual premises are very aesthetic. Rooms are traditional. Our room backed up to the waterfall. Wonderful to hear... 4 onsen pools. Only one had high heat...

Went for two days in July .. it was a fun journey to get there..The place was in a magical location and the onsens were fabulous... accommodations were good and the personel very nice..Was relaxing and just what we needed to re-charge ourselves.. My only compliant would be the food.. We ordered the meal plan that came with room..I think...

This place is tucked in a remote mountain area next to a rushing stream and a waterfall. Back to nature. Simple rooms with kerosene lamps only. No electricity, no wifi. Our group of 5 stayed in a house with 4 bedrooms and a common toilet which was dimly lit. At night, it was a bit eerie because outside our house...

Spent a couple of weeks checking in and out of onsens in the Tohoku area and by faaaaar this was the most beautiful one I had seen! Every detail was thoughtfully chosen and presented. Kerosene lamps in every room, cedar bath houses, interiors, I even loved how each of the dinner courses were announced. We went in the dead of...

This could be one of the most remote onsen resorts in Japan: three hours by bullet train from Tokyo, then connections on two local trains, a bus and a shuttle. Located in a wooded valley in the mountains, 6km from the main road, at the end of a track that is impassible in winter except by the resort's own shuttle....

As so many other posts have commented, if you want to get away from it all, this is the place in Aomori. The hot springs were traditional, with no showers to wash with, but rather wooden buckets and a tub to dip from. It was a little awkward, actually, since I am not a small person and I am used...

We stayed for one night for New Year's Eve, and it's the highlight of our honeymoon in Japan. As others have commented, getting to this place is not easy, however it's well worth the effort. The scenery is breathtaking during winter, and if offers an authentic Japanese ryokan experience rarely found elsewhere. There is no electricity or air conditioning in...
