No complaints - good nourishing food, decent beer, genial hosts and a comfortable bed. The day long tour of the battlefields and cemeteries culminating at Spion Kop was most informative. Raymond's interpretation was both inspiring and thought provoking and he never flagged!! However, I thought that the many mawkish references at the Lodge to Liverpool Football Club and Hillsborough were...

Even though the weather was turning wet and windy I had a great time on the Spion Kop Tour. The day began with tea (always a good start) and meeting Daisy the terrier (again always a good thing when a dog is involved). I elected to have lunch which was just lovely. The atmosphere at the Lodge was friendly and...

We had a wonderful stay at the Lodge and enjoyed the hospitality of Lynette and Alastair during a great communal meal in the evening. The experience and history of the battle field was told and became alive by the great story telling of Alistair and walking in the battle field was an unforgettable experience. Our visitor Daisy, the lovely Fox...

Very informative. Bonus was the visit to Buller's headquaters and lookout post above the lodge. The lead up to this battle was well explained as well as the reasons why the British took such heavy casualties. The fact that both factions saw fit to vacate the hill overnight does not clarify why the Boers were regarded as the victors, that...

We loved our stay with you - Raymond is an excellent and extremely knowledgeable quide, and good company too. We also enjoyed the convivial dinners round the table meeting some of the other guests, and met three couples who we got on with particularly well. We have talked a lot about Spionkop Lodge & praised you to the hilt!! Lodge

We chose Spionkop Lodge because we wanted to hike in the Drakensberg Mountains. We didn't realise that we would also have a 6-hour tour and lecture about South African history and the Anglo-Boer War. We stayed 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The other guests we met were South Africans or people who had worked and lived in Africa. We...

The Lodge sits on 700 hectares of its own land, much of it original. The lodge itself is charming as are its owners and all the staff. The adjacent land is a national park and should accommodate an enjoyable afternoon's game viewing assuming you have time. The important reason to visit Spion Kop Lodge is to listen to the views...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Drakensberg and Free State Mountains. Spion Kop Lodge is the ideal place from where to explore the battlefields, set on an echo farm in Kwazulu-Natal. General Buller’s headquarters during the relief of the Ladysmith campaign, Mount Alice, is located on the farm. The beautifully restored, 8 bedroomed colonial-style farmhouse, is set in tranquil, secure grounds with superb views. Added to this there are two cottages, offering self-catering accommodation in an out-of-Africa setting. There is a library with an excellent collection of historical books, a dining room, cozy pub and a swimming pool. The owner and registered guide, Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), guides guests to the many historic Battlefield sites, as does his son Alastair. We have 250 different bird species, hiking on the property and Sunset Boat Cruises and horse riding amongst the rhino, giraffe and various other animals. "Arrive as guests, leave as friends." ... more   less
