if thorn grove isn't on your bucket list you have the wrong bucket . why go for minimalist and the ordinary when you can experience thorn grove . a once [ or twice ] in a lifetime feast of exceptional . set in a beautiful manicured garden with majestic elms and a botanic who's who with a short picturesque walk to stirling for restaurant choices . but then that wouldn't be necessary because to have a five star meal at TG leaves them for dead .

Thorngrove Manor is a beautiful and Magical place to stay. The architecture is magnificent. Antiques, furniture, fabrics, china and linen, all so beautiful. The food and the way it was presented. WOW. We stayed 2 nights in the Queens Chambers. Celebrated a special Birthday. We felt like Royalty. Treated like the King and Queen. We were treated so special. It is the most memorable experience, we will treasure forever. We will never ever forget. Thank you Ken and Nydia for your wonderful hospitality. Highly recommended. Love from Tina and Stephen Bobbin. Red Cliffs Victoria.

To experience something magical, it would normally be through a enthralling fairy tale or an engaging movie, but Thorngrove Country Manor is really a magical experience. As one marvels at the intricate detail that Ken has painstakingly toiled at for 30 years and the incredible detail that the couple have gone to in all their furnishings, their entire home is a magical place that leaves you a truly unique experience. If you have stayed there you know what I mean.....if you haven't stated there, this should be on your bucket list. 6 stars

First of all, it's not a hotel but a guest house. Built at least 30 years ago and since then not repaired. "Hotel" consists of 5 rooms, and besides there are no amenities, including a lack of restaurants. Carpets, furniture is not changed since the creation of the 'hotel'.
The bathroom is very small approx. 3 sqm. Towels are probably almost as old as the "hotel". The price is good but only continental breakfast. If you wish to heat something you have to pay extra AUD 49 per person.
Price per room is approx. 1000 AUD and should be 10 times lower.
I've been in more than 10 bookings SLH but this is by far my worst experience of many years.

Response from Thorngrove, Manager at Thorngrove Manor

I very bizarre response indeed. Thorngrove is maintained to the highest of standards and is constantly upgraded. Our antique collection even evolves. The furniture in their suite ranges from a C18th light, 1830s cupboard and other special pieces from Sevres porcelain to a French silk suspension clock. The special order Brintons axminster carpet is less than a year old and nothing in the room is "original". It is possibly better to be certain of facts before making such statements. In the world there are diverse properties with different styles to suit different people. In this instance Thorngrove's style and design which is so evident in the many images available obviously did not appeal. The comment even about the towels is strange. We use the best Australian towels available from Aust weaving mills with the highest gsm. If there was any issue about the bathroom size, we could have moved them to a suite with a large bathroom if that was there preference. Thorngrove is operated to the highest of standards, but does require dinner to be pre-booked. We use the best organic and bio-dynamic produce which has to be ordered to ensure supply. The Polish guests seemed to enjoy there porridge every morning as part of the continental breakfast selection. The larger selection menu has exotic such as crocodile and emu sausages. Thorngrove has impeccable maintenance standards and the building and the grounds are immaculate. It is sad that a forum like Tripadvisor is used in such a away. It is always best to express any concerns and actually ascertain facts before writing ill-informed comments. Any discussion would have revealed our continuous upgrading program.

A perfect time to book the extraordinary afternoon tea/luncheon at Thorngrove. A bonus was the amazing bunch of wildly romantic flowers from the Bluebell Society to take home. This was a feast fit for a "King" as well as a Queen. The fire was blazing when we arrived and where shown to the Kings Chamber, an exuberant and amazing room; wonderful on a wintry day. The table was beautiful, with no food yet to be laid. Firstly came plates of hot savoury dishes. Everything is handmade for the occasion, including the ever so thin and light butter puff pastry. A menu is left on the table. Service is with stunningpieces of antique sterling silver dating from the mid 1700s.
There were the tiniest of macarons, glan chou, the tinest of petite-four Lindt chocolate gateau, cygne, toffee orange cakes and light ethereal scones. Everything was perfect-our sugar intake for the year, but balanced with Moroccan beef and Italian chicken. So many teas, coffees and pure indulgence. We also had a goody box to take some home to share. An amazing experience to celebrate all things royal. Being in the Kings Chamber we also got to see the bedroom and bathroom. The bed was so high, you would need a ste,p and the bathroom overlooked a pond.

A bit away from the small city of Adelaide is a rare gem! A castle nestled in the hills run by a quirky and sincere man and his wife. Although the hotel has 5 rooms they don't allow more than 2 rooms to be occupied in order to pay full attention to you every need. Kenneth, the husband, came to greet us at the front gate and showed us around the property and to our suite, The Queen's Chamber, which was spacious and perfectly furnished to make you feel like you were in a fairytale. While we looked around our room, Kenneth brought our VERRRRRRRYYY HEAVY luggage up the very narrow spiral staircase and to our room. For some reason we really did not expect that this was the only way to get the luggage up to the room and we REALLY didn't expect Kenneth to do it for us. Breakfast is served every morning in your room and dinner is served for an additional cost either in your room or in a very beautiful dining area facing the garden. I would recommend this! In the dining room there is a real candle chandelier that is lit for your dinner. The rooms is small, intimate and comfortable and they seat you right in the window for a beautiful view of the sunset. Another amazing detail is the flatware that Kenneth and his wife uses for the dinner. Each piece is a unique antique some dating back to the 1500's. Kenneth served us the night we ate in the dining room and we really loved getting to know about him, the castle and the history of the furnishings. He is a little timid, but really enjoys talking about his passion which is Thorngrove Manor. Although we only had 2 nights there we will definitely remember it as a great experience and hope to return again. It is definitely 5-star worthy!

Even if only once in a lifetime this beautifully constructed Guest house met and exceeded all our expectations. Ken was a delight, he crafted a wonderful picnic for us, and took care of our every need. Breakfast was excellent and the room reminiscent of our time in Switzerland.
