After a few unsuccessful attempts to visit caused by COVID we finally made it. The view from the Balcony Apartment was amazing. Secluded in the Adelaide Hills the scenery from our room was just what we were hoping for. The balcony apartment is spacious with a good sized living/lounge/kitchen area, leading to a large bedroom and ensuite. All of the required food preparation and eating utensils are well catered for. The breakfast provisions in the fridge were ample and fresh. The bread and fruit was a nice touch and welcomed after a days driving. A couple of small things perhaps. In the summer months a fan or air conditioner would be a welcomed addition in the bedroom. The single air conditioner in the living room was ok but did not provide that cool environment. The Retreat is definitely heading to five stars and we will be back for sure.

My partner and I live in Adelaide and booked to stay at the Retreat for a mini getaway. We had the most spectacular stay. Everything was not only very well decorated but also extremely comfortable, I especially loved the king sized bed and the choice of pillows. The bath was large with epsom salts, body wash and high quality shampoo and conditioner all provided. The breakfast was very generous with local cakes and the huge choice of teas was a great touch. The swimming pool was perfect temperature and warm enough to swim in June. The Retreat is near the main road but we could not hear it from inside the apartment. We loved it and will be returning. Thanks!

We found the set up of the 3 connected residences the perfect setup for our group. We had the garden room which was amazing, and this became our happy hour meeting area every night. The provided breakfast, the well stocked kitchen, the log fire, (which was already lit for us on arrival), and just the room to spread out. We even played trivial pursuit which one of our friends found in the library.
We also was impressed that there was champagne glasses as well as wine glasses provided, plus plenty of diswashing tablets.
(This is something that doesn't always get provided in other places We have stayed)
All in all we loved it and could easily not go home.

We recently stayed here for 2 nights with a group of of family and friends. The positive aspects of our stay outweighed the negative aspects but only just!
Amongst the positives were the large, well appointed, comfortable living and bedroom spaces, the good standard of amenities provided and the well maintained and attractive garden surrounds. Another plus was the provision of a good standard and quantity of breakfast foods.
Unfortunately, the Retreat is located on the side of a slope right next the South Eastern Freeway. I am by no means a light sleeper. However during the first night of our stay, my sleep was repeatedly disturbed by the droning noises generated by the heavy haulage trucks making their way in both directions, along the freeway.
During the second night, I had a better night’s sleep but this was probably because I was so tired from my disturbed sleep during the first night of our stay.
My best advice is that if you intend to stay at the Retreat and you are likely to be bothered by extraneous noises when you are attempting to sleep, ensure that you pack some effective earplugs!

Hi Hugh, Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay. We always appreciate feedback and glad to hear most of your experience of your stay was positive. Regarding the noise, we would love to know what part of The Retreat you slept in so we can investigate your noise concerns. As much as we advertise to all who book that we are within close proximity to the freeway we have invested heavily in sound proofing so would love to know what room is of concern for noise. As you weren't the person who booked with us we have no way of reaching out to you, please let us know so we can ensure all future guests have a restful nights sleep. kind regards Bridget

Having our travel plans to Pt Douglas cancelled. We searched for a place we could stay in South Australia. We were drawn to the Retreat at Stirling, heated pool etc.
It was such a lovely place, everything needed was provided. The breakfast food so substantial, the mushrooms were delicious.

We stayed in the apartment with the balcony and loved it. The apartment was so clean and the view was great. Helen really has made it feel like home. The supplied breakfast, fantastic! The location great.
A little road noise with the freeway close. The bed very firm but only minor negatives. All up, will defiantly be returning and rate it 5 out of 5. Thanks Helen

Call me pedantic, but clearly the photographs on the web site were taken when the apartment was launched many years ago. It is starting to look a bit tired as evidenced by chipped paintwork inside, the coffee table and dining table are of a standard that I wouldn’t even give as a donation to Vinnies and clearly need upgrading, the outside of the building could do with a coat of paint and the pavers definitely need the attention of a high pressure hose. The fully equipped kitchen hosts two dreadful fry pans that have clearly seen better days and on which I struggled to cook breakfast, and a solitary saucepan. We were not advised when booking that the pool would be used for aqua classes all afternoon until 7.45 pm which was a disappointment. On the plus side, the bedroom and bathroom were very nicely done and the gas fire very welcome on a wet Hills evening. Breakfast provisions were excellent and I loved the freshly squeezed orange juice. Due to the excellent company I shared, my visit was not a total disappointment but I think some issues need to be attended to. (Date of experience: Nov, 2010 )

We are grateful for the feedback about many aspects of our property. Glad that you found the apartment clean and well provisioned. We also appreciate the helpful suggestions you have made for ways we can improve. Our sincere apologies that the bottle of champagne was not in the fridge for your arrival. It is a tradition we have to provide an excellent local champagne and it was an oversight on our part not to notice it wasn't there. We understand how concerned you would be with the problem of the door lock. Our mobile telephone numbers (together with other relevant Emergency numbers) are in the B&B for easy contact with us day and night. Had we known there was a difficulty we would have sent a locksmith over ASAP. We have now had the lock repaired. Thank you for bringing the private outdoor courtyard to our attention. The Trees outside the courtyard were blown around in the recent winds and the blossom and leaves made their way into the courtyard. There is a swimming pool timetable available showing when the pool is in use. The pool is available for B&B guests to use at any time when no class is scheduled. There is no need to made a booking. Just wander in. There was an aqua-aerobics class in the pool during your stay. A complimentary invitation for you to join the class was left on the table. I'm sorry you didn't see the invitation. You may not be aware but the smoke alarm in the B&B is hard-wired and doesn't run off a battery. Thank you for your other helpful suggestions. Your feedback and ideas are welcomed. We hope you will return one day. Kind regards Helen & Brian

The "Retreat at Stirling", while beautiful, comfortable and well stocked with breakfast provisions was unfortunately not a retreat for us. We splurged $500 on a 2 night stay - a rare treat motivated by our craving for an interlude of seclusion and tranquility in the Adelaide Hills. What we didn't expect was that the large heated indoor swimming pool co-located under the same roof and separated from our lovely apartment by only an adjoining wall, was the venue for a thriving aqua-aerobics business. This operates daily, during most mornings and some afternoons and evenings.
We woke and ate breakfast on both mornings to the intrusive sounds of enthusiastic aqua-aerobics classes. Anxious about the possibility of swimming patrons having a curious glance in our large front windows on their way to and from the car-park, we kept the blinds tightly drawn most of our time there, denying ourselves the hills view in favour of ensuring our privacy.
We felt that it was unfair of the owners to operate a "romantic retreat" at the same time and under the same roof as an aqua-aerobics business. Perhaps the Retreat could be made available Fri-Sun nights and the aqua-aerobics business run Mon-Thurs? At any rate we were pleased to leave and return to the relative peace of our own home.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of The Retreat. We're pleased that you found our Retreat beautiful, comfortable and well stocked. But we are concerned that the noise from the Aqua-aerobics class clashed with your very reasonable expectation of a quiet and secluded time away. We value your feed-back. We are aware that the aqua-aerobic classes during the week can be heard by our guests and we do advise people when they book that there will be pool classes during the week and our guests are invited (complimentary) to join these classes. The pool is wonderfully warm and spotless so there is some demand from our local community. Your feedback is fair and reasonable and we will consider how best to address the issue of operating our Retreat B&B while balancing this with the need to offer the pool for classes. Thank you again for your comments
