It's not often that you walk into a hotel to be greeted by the matriarch, welcoming you with a big gentle smile into her world. As soon as we set foot in the Bangala we were treated with utmost care and hospitality. The owner and her manager and helpers took time to find out a little about their guests and...

The Bangala at Karaikudi is a boutique hotel that is not only very very good on all fronts but actually really difficult to find any flaws on any front. Commencing from the much better than normal very personalized reservation experience, to a top class check-in on arrival, lovely room with period furniture and decor that blends with the character of...

Coming from Madurai into the busy area and suddenly passed a door and felt home! Great hospitality with simplicity and sincerity. Was traveling on my own and asked to have a table for dinner in a quiet area and the wonderful lady who is the owner of the place told me: no problem and there is another lady traveling on...

My wife and I unhesitatingly chose the Bangala to take some family and friends too celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. This was our third visit there, so we knew what to expect from Mrs. Meenakshi Meyyappan, and her excellent team. Neither 'Aachi' nor her team let down our aspirations. Our guests were blown away by the oasis within Karaikuddi, the...

I entered the gates of Bangala early in the morning this December and realized as I crossed the threshold that it is way beyond a hotel. Bangala is not a yet-another-heritage-property-converted-to-a-hotel endeavor. It is a beautiful, quintessential home of Ms Meyeppan, where her family and team of zealous home makers ensure you feel you have arrived in heaven. The timeless...

A group of 7 of us visited Karaikudi between 10-13 Dec and we stayed at the Bangala. Not an ounce of regret! A simply fabulous place with wonderful service and cozy ambience! If any writers out there want a place to retreat to, this is the place for you. Comfortable corners to ruminate in, yummiest food for breakfast and dinner...

I arrived at the hotel about 3pm and the host asked if I wanted lunch. Although they had finished serving they would get something for me. I said just something very light. 10 minutes later I’m sat in front of a palm leaf that they started to fill with dall, raita, spiced potato, mango, rice, curry and chicken in a...

We only had one night here but what a night!. Arrived for the fabled lunch served on a banana leaf and it was sensational. Beautiful fish, lovely mango, tasty rice, chicken with a bite. Every morsel lovingly cooked and prepared. Attended by friendly waiters who were ever ready with second helpings, most welcome after a tiring journey. Our room was...

We had seen reviews and went here for lunch after a disappointing trip to Kanadukathan Palace and to the 1000 Windows Palace (both were closed, for long we were told) and were pleasantly greeted by the hostesses Annapurna and Mrs. Joseph. We were told that the fixed menu non-veg (1000/-) would be ready in an hour and were sent off...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bangala is a heritage hotel in Karaikudi, the heart of Chettinad. Now in its 12th year, it is renowned for its local cuisine and warm hospitality. All rooms are air conditioned and with attached bathrooms. Amenities include a swimming pool, gym, massage center , library, cycling, etc. Chettinad is a small area accessible from Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore and Rameswaram. It is the homeland of a Nattukottai Chettiar community, a community that made huge fortunes in south east Asia during colonial rule. These fortunes were used to build amazing mansions over the past 200 years, that evolved in style and scale, and needs to be seen to be appreciated. It is a little known destination but should not be missed. ... more   less
