Stayed as a family for a couple of nights so, like many others, we could base ourselves for the magnificent walks that are so accessible from the lodge (we had a rental car). As has been said by others - this is not only a backpackers lodge - it can provide something extra for those who want it, like us....

Thanks Greg. Glad you had a great time. We can provide ear plugs - what a good idea, though it is a shame that we need to. Sorry if some guests were a little noisy. Most of our guests are very considerate. Looking forward to seeing you again one day. Take care and all the very best. Toni

Beautifully situated at the head of Lake Wakatipu opposite Glenorchy, this beautiful lodge was a joy to stay at. The setting and surrounding scenery was spectacular. I had a double room which had a queen bed and a single bed, warm and comfortable. Bathrooms were down the hall but were clean and I never had to wait. One of the...

My husband and I stayed at the Kinloch Lodge -- a kind of backpackers lodge with a community kitchen/gathering place and a fantastic restaurant on a gorgeous lake -- on our last night in the South Island, just before our flight back to Auckland. This was on the advice of an Aussie couple we met in Punakaiki whose daughter had...

It was clean and tidy and beyond basic, making for a special occasion (our Christmas present) treat. The anomalies - ordering the meal upon arrival and the sandflies - were well worth getting over in an instant as it allowed attentive service and appreciation of the awesome environment (before it became an over used phrase for such things as great...

First you have to tell them what you like to order when you book the table. So maybe the salmon was already cooked when i rang. The most well overcooked salmon i ever tasted in nz. The carrotcake what you served at the lakehouse is the best ever well done.

We ask for orders when you book so that we can plan our food for the evening, everything is freshly cooked to order. A remote location does bring challenges which we deal with by planning ahead. Sorry the salmon was not to your taste, we would have happily fixed this for you if we'd known (I wasn't the server so...

if you want to experience NZ's stunning mountain scenery with a touch of history, there is no better place than Kinloch Lodge. This was our fourth time here as a family, so there is personal history for us here - climbing the Glacier Burn 14 years ago, day walks up the Routeburn, Greenstone and Caples tracks, the beautiful woodland walk...

Thanks for a great review Anne! So pleased you had another wonderful stay here at Kinloch. The sandflies are far less troublesome in the winter ;)

Had previously visited in 2012. Visited again for a wedding in November 2016. An excellent venue, far away from the maddening crowd. It has three levels of accommodation, the Heritage Rooms, recreating the 1868 guesthouse style; the Wilderness Rooms, modern back-packers' accommodation c/w kitchens and lounge; and a camp-site on the lake's foreshore. There is also a comfortable restaurant and...

I first stayed here when I traveled abroad in college and my family came to visit. We returned to NZ on vacation this year, and wanted some more time at Kinloch. It's just as good as we remembered. Nah, it's even better. The drive in from Queenstown along Lake Wakatipu really is breathtaking. Upon arrival, we got a complimentary beverage...

Amazing views. Great staff and best bed we had in all NZ. There is a full kitchen of you want to cook but also a great little restaurant that does breakfast, lunch and dinner. Perfect place to stay if you want to explore some of the tramps in the area.

Great location. The attached restaurant is very homely and warm inside with great views outside, and my vege burger was delicious. Backpacker rooms are clean and tidy. The kitchen facilities had everything required. This lodge has a lovely feel to it and the staff are friendly and helpful. Toni was able to enquire after a lost YHA package for me...
