If you are a couple or 2 then I highly recommend Glenorchy lake house as a place to rent for a base in this area.
Close to the lake with good views, the house is very comfortable and has all you need for your stay.
The hot tub is also great after a big day out.
The house is well managed by the trading post next door and all your needs will be well looked after.

Had a fabulous stay at the Gelnorchy Lake House - The room was VERY comfortable and spacious, the shared kitchen facilities are perfect and a lovely lounge to rest in at the end of the days adventures... PLUS an excellent hot tub!! The place was very warm even in the middle of winter. Very friendly staff and an absolute home away from home. We were fortunate enough to have it all to ourselves which made it even more amazing value :) Highly recommend to anyone wanting a comfortable and homely accommodation in picturesque Glenorchy. Love it here!

Such a beautiful house and perfect location, with views of the lake and a short walk to all shops. Nina is a fabulous host, there were lots of very thoughtful touches to make our stay special. Highly recommend the Lake House, hope to go go back.

This Boutique Bed and Breakfast had a pleasant hot tub plus, the accommodation itself was adequate for the price, however I was disappointed to learn that the deposit taken as part of the booking consisted of the full payment for the two nights we stayed meaning they had the use of my money for 14 days this was not a deposit but full payment. It advertises as a bed and breakfast however the breakfast is only available if you book direct . The site we booked on and all others I checked after the event declared that the room would be serviced. This did not happen. We would not recommend this B&B.

Very comfortable and great location. Enjoyed the lagoon walk, breakfasts at Trading Post, chats with staff. Clean, spacious and comfortable. Easy drive round the top of the lake to Kinloch. Particularly enjoyed the walk around Lake Sylvan.

While the house is cute, the biscuits and afternoon tea was delicious and the king ensuite looked very nice, my husband and I did not feel safe staying here. The locks on the bedroom doors do not work, and one of the doors to the outside does not even close entirely. Furthermore, a set of spare keys for anyone to get in was "hidden" in the oh-so-obvious position under the outside door mat. Apologies to the owners for giving that one away on the internet but seriously it's time to find a better spot. Having been broken into and robbed on more than one occasion while traveling previously in NZ, we couldn't ignore the warning signs and left prematurely. I hope that this review convinces the owners to fix the locks and secure the house for future guests.

We're sorry you didn't feel safe Bonnie and we're also sorry for the delay in responding to your review. We have reviewed our doors and locks and we have replaced one lock, all our doors work as they should. We don't usually keep keys under the mat so not sure why this happened then, we do leave keys for other guests if they haven't yet arrived but they only have keys for the shared space and their room, no other rooms. Glenorchy is an extremely safe place with no crime and we've never known anyone feel unsafe here but we're sorry you did.

This is a nice timber cottage that is well appointed with a great bath and spa outside. The big king bed is also very comfortable and the accommodation is located in a convenient spot. However at $340+ per night it is completely overpriced for what you get. What gets worse, this price was just for the room, not even the whole house. I can't imagine the lack of privacy should there be other guests staying there. Another rip off was the $60 5 minute boat ride to their restaurant on the other side of the lake. This was never mentioned otherwise I would have ate in glenorchy. To charge this amount for guests is ridiculous. I would give this accommodation tops marks if they dropped their prices by about 35% to 40%

We're sorry these guests found the property over-priced. This is a bed and breakfast so there is just one lounge and dining area shared by guests, not a lounge and dining area each. The website clearly depicts what the property is a about. We offer a boat transfer to dinner at Kinloch which costs $15 per person each way. Most of the time there are just two guests on the boat. We run the boat from Kinloch to collect the guests in Glenorchy to bring to Kinloch. Anyone who knows boats will understand that this is what it costs. We have two properties at a range of prices and these are all quality checked each year by Qualmark. We are passionate about our business and want every guest to have a fantastic time.

If you are looking for 5 star luxury accommodation with an enthusiastic host to welcome you on arrival, located in a venue that has suitably supporting eateries in the evenings, then give this place a miss!

Their web site is very carefully constructed in order to convey an impression of total luxury and relaxation, but fails to convey the real situation. It claims to ' provide a luxury b&b accommodation experience in the heart of Glenorchy', when in practice it is a dark and rather gloomy wooden structure more reminiscent of a rundown cricket pavilion than a luxury b& b, situated some way back from the lake with views obstructed by trees.

The hosts do not live in the property, something even 24 hours before our arrival they failed to explain, indeed they reside some half hour boat trip on the other side of the lake. When we arrived for 3 nights in late January after a long drive the place was locked up with no signs of life, and we had to eventually find a girl in a local shop who let us in who was less than welcoming in her manner.

The' scrumptious afternoon tea' that was advertised on their web site did not materialise, indeed I note that this part of the offer has been amended on the website since complaining to the owners about our experience , there was no milk in the fridge and some of the cutlery had old food stuck to it. The main bedroom can only be accessed by going outside and coming back in through another door, and the dark pine walls and low ceilings create a thoroughly depressing ambience. The whole place looked tired.

New Zealand is renowned for its hosted luxury b& b accommodation and we have enjoyed many excellent examples during two extended visits to the Country. This place just doesn't deliver when compared with its competitors and yet it seeks to charge $380 per night. Judging from our other experiences I suggest that even $200 would be generous.

It didn't take us too long to realise that we had made a big mistake with this property, and that we had been badly misled by their web site. Consequently, for the first time ever in over 50 years of travelling the world, we decided not to even get our bags out of the car and drove back to Wanaka where we experienced the sort of service that we expect for that sort of money.

The things to do in Glenorchy are jet boating on the river Dart, horse riding or walking and hiking. All of these can be organised from Queenstown which is only 45 minutes away . Glenorchy itself has nothing special to offer and no eateries in the evening that have not been slated on Trip Advisor.
There really is no reason to stay there and certainly no justification for the ridiculous charges that this place is seeking to apply. You will see that there were only 12 reviews in the past 4 years, but suddenly after we complained to the owners 4 extremely flattering reviews appeared in a matter of days! You must draw your own conclusions...! You have been warned!

Both these reviews by Hugh39 and Michelle refer to the same stay. These guests arrived, checked in and then changed their minds and left for Wanaka. Cancellations in our short high season really affect us, so we don’t give a refund if cancelled at such short notice unless we are able to replace the booking. Our Qualmark 4.5 star property is clearly represented on the website and this has not been altered in any way claimed by Hugh39. We are sorry that Hugh and Michelle decided not to stay in Glenorchy. Glenorchy is not Queenstown (thank goodness). Read the guidebooks and the reviews of the area and decide whether you are a Glenorchy or a Queenstown person, and if you choose Glenorchy then we would love to see you at Kinloch Lodge or Glenorchy Lake House.

Stayed 2 nights at the Lakehouse at the end of our 2 week Sth Island holiday and if we could change one thing about this stay, it would be to make it longer. We chose this place because we wanted to slow things right down and we certainly got the peaceful and relaxing finish to our holiday.

Our family of 2 adults and 3 children booked the whole house and were spoilt for space! We slept in the King room with bathroom, shower and toilet which was very well appointed and had its own little private terrace. We had a free portacot for our baby in the room with us. Our two other children had the Superking room, also nicely appointed, but the toilet and bathroom with shower were across from the bedroom. It didn't have an outdoor terrace but had big windows with an excellent view of the mountains and across to the lake. Both rooms had their own flat screen TVs and DVD players. Upstairs was another lovely King bedroom with additional two single beds, which was unused during this visit. If three families or couples shared it would definitely be worth it. The beds were very comfortable and if in winter, the in room heating and electric blanket would keep you nice and warm.

The shared lounge and dining was also nice and comfortable with excellent views, especially of the mountains. Though the lounge/living area was well equipped with a selection of books, DVDs, games, SKY TV, the views outside was more than enough to keep us adults satisfied but the kids did appreciate the TV. When outside we enjoyed the hot tub and the garden great for kicking around a ball. There were more seating areas at the house terrace/deck giving one their own private space if there were other guests around. However this would only be cosy during warm weather!

The Lakehouse is a B&B that is right next to the Trading Post shop and cafe also owned by the Lakehouse and Kinloch Lodge owners. The shop is small but has lovely items for sale and yummy cakes and drinks for sale too! This is where you go to to check in/out.

As for meals, Breakfast prepared by Toni, the owner and manager, was delicious and she was very accommodating to our special dietary requirements, which was seafood and vegetables only. We had salmon, avocado, fresh fruits, croissants, and much more. She even made rice for our little baby when I casually mentioned that that was what the baby could eat! On Toni's recommendation, and at our own cost, we had Debbie Crompton, a wonderful local chef come over on our last night to prepare a delicious dinner. A choice of a few menus were given to us in advance. It was certainly a good experience. What more, Debbie was so good with our young children as well.

Without giving away too much more, in short we would highly recommend the Lakehouse in Glenorchy. The welcome we received was very warm, the food was delicious, the accommodation and service was wonderful and the surrounding environment absolutely gorgeous. Our only little issue was that the Lakehouse can get a bit dusty, especially since our trip was in summer, when it was dry (but sunny and beautiful) and the dust came in from the riverbed and short bit of gravel road at the front of the Lakehouse, i.e. the outdoor furniture. This certainly would not deter us from returning as Toni would ensure housekeeping took care of it.

Note the number of reviews on Tripadvisor does not do justice to this place compared to the Visitor guest book that is full of only positive comments!
