Ginzan Onsen is a hot spring resort with a wonderful Taisho-era romantic atmosphere. As we were planning a trip around Tohoku, we had been researching the possibility of staying at a hotel in Ginzan Onsen. This was just over six months before we planned our trip. Looking at the website of Kosekiya Annex, we saw that there was still availability on the day we were going to visit Ginzan Onsen. Kosekiya Annex is a famous and popular hot spring inn in Ginzan Onsen, so we made a reservation right away. We were also able to get a room on the river side, of which there are only a limited number.
Then, in the fall six months later, there was a parking lot reserved for Kosekiya at the entrance to Ginzan Onsen, and we called to be picked up from there. Even the inn's shuttle car can only go up to the edge of the hot spring town.
We arrived in time for the 3 o'clock check-in time, so we were able to fully enjoy the inn and the hot spring town. Our guest room was a pair of Japanese-style rooms facing the river, but the room at the back had a twin bed. From the window of our room, we could see the hot spring town as it went into the evening, the night view lit by gas lamps, and the early morning when no one was around. The food was good, and the retro hot springs were wonderful. Best of all, by staying overnight, I was able to fully experience the Ginzan Onsen deserted environment.

If you go to Ginzan Hot Spring in winter, it is recommended to stay at this hotel. It is right next to the hot spring street. Taking photos in the morning or evening can avoid the crowds, making it easier to take ideal photos. The hot springs in the hotel are not large, but you can go to the sister store Ginzanso to soak in the hot springs and enjoy the first-class outdoor hot springs.

First of all, please not that this place (Ginzan Onsen, not this hotel) is VERY popular in Japan (as well as other countries, especially China), so you must book very early (6-7 months in summer, 1 year minimum during winter). So, this being said: - if this is your first time in a ryokan, you will be amazed. Nevertheless, the interior was quite old and dusty. The state of the facilities are not that good, even if one can see they are well cleaned ... they are simply old and need urgent refurbishment, especially given the high prices charged - on the other hand, the magic of the place compensates this. But it would be so simple to modernize it, especially the entrance area (it looks like a storage area !, great contrast with the other ryokans in the area, it's a pitty). - the food was great, exactly what you would expect in this price range for a ryokan - the baths are OK, if you want something special use the ones (exterior) in the "sister" hotel, they are great.
(-) the big negative point for me was some of the staff and the way they seem to treat non Japanese guests; from the guy at check-in that started shouting "no reservation, full" because he didn't understood we have already a reservation ... (he never apologized). and the check-out where they showed us where to leave the luggage before leaving and that was everything. No goodbye when we came back to take the luggage, no help to the shuttle, nothing. Also, I think It's the very first ryokan I've visited where the staff insists we should take the luggage to our room ... without offering to help us or anything. Extremely disappointing and I think the level is so low because they have too many clients, people will keep coming even with substandard quality. It may not be strange if you don't know how a ryokan works but it' not good....
PS1: get a room on the front side (river), the back side is pretty sad.
PS2: try to get outside of the "main street" of the "village" and do a stroll in the mountains around the Onsen, it's a great experience. Also, the best visit we did was after 21h00, when most tourists are in their best... it was great !

I stayed a night with my son (16-years-old) in a renovated room for 2-5 persons (two beds and futon are available). The room is spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. The dinner and breakfast were very good. The hotel personnel were helpful. We were picked up from the Shinkansen station, O-ishida (takes 30min). The hotel is located in the centre of the town. You can take a short walk in the tiny town and also to the silver mine area (unexpectedly cool) along the river. For Onsen, I recommend to go to the sister hotel (free for the Kosekiya guests, 5 min-walk). The baths in Ginzan-so is new, much bigger and has open air bathtubs with a great view of the valley. The water temperature there is 39 degrees (Koseki-ya is really hot). I recommend this hotel to everyone.

I stayed at the annex, which is located in the ancient Onsen street. That’s the advantage during snowy winter time or bad weather. However, the beautiful hotspring is located in the main hotel, which is 10mins walk from the annex. I guess both have their own advantages.

2015年12月2日 友人との旅行で宿泊させていただきました。 We were from Hong Kong. My friend dropped her mobile phone into the river when we were taking photos beside the river. It was dark and we didn't know how to get back the mobile phone. Thanks to the guy at front desk, he put on boots and climbed down to the river and helped us to get the phone back in such cold weather. 本当に ありがとうございました。

We had an exceptional time at this ryokan, it was perfect for a one day get away. The dinner and breakfast were very, very good, the onsen was super relaxing, and the room was very specious and filled with amenities. All set in a picturesque little town. We’ll be ack!

The place is good with the history and story of the ryokan. The room is great and experience old dated. The service is fair like most of the hotel in business area. Old and outdated bathing also give another experience but I am not prefer. This is not the first time I stay in ryokan so from my evaluation, the overall experience is fair.

I stay in this ryokan for one night. The view from the room was amazing. I love it a lot and it was very relaxing. Even they don't have outdoor onsen (hot spring), but you still have an indoor hot spring. The food was great and the host was very nice. Definitely, I will visit there again.

Thank you very much for your stay. There are no outdoor hotspring baths, but I'm happy because you're glad about the bath and a dish. It's pleasant that you can meet again.

The noise from the boiler outside was loud. Also, the futon was just wrapped in a sheet, so if you turned over in your sleep, it would flip up and it was uncomfortable to sleep. It was also unsanitary. The room and the building are quite dilapidated.
