It is a relaxing resort ideal for those who would like to get away from crowds and the rest of the world.
One small hiccup: Wi-fi was not easily available. Pros/cons depending on your perspective. When we tried to ask the counter staff about wifi access, one particular manager was curt and unhelpful. The language barrier made communication even more difficult. Other than this one rude guy, the rest of the staff were extremely courteous and pleasant.
For shopping there's a convenience store 5-10 min walk away & some souvenir shops around the resort. No big malls in the vicinity, but you won't feel compelled to shop anyway. Yufuin is picturesque and worth taking a stroll around.
The main draw and the reason I'd come back here is the onsen.
There are indoor/outdoor onsen on levels 1 & 2. Males & females rotate levels at each half of the day. The onsen at level 1 was especially lovely with a breathtaking view of the outdoors. There aren't many people around late morning and late night so it's great if it's your first time and you feel self-conscious. Shower facilities were large, clean and well stocked with all manner of toiletries including moisturizers/makeup removers.
Overall very disappointing for the price.
Men’s onsen on first floor has hot and cold pools, while women’s onsen on second floor has only hot pools when we went, but there was a “rooibos tea” hot pool in the women’s onsen! If you believe tea is not only good for drinking but soaking in as well, good to try.
View of the mountains very relaxing, and water temperature can ease all your aches and pains away after a day of wandering, eating and shopping around the pretty Yufuin area. Reception staff ably welcomes guests who speak English and the fee to enjoy the onsen is quite cheap. We always enjoy onsens on our trips to Japan, and this one was no exception.
We checked into the hotel late afternoon. Check-in went smoothly without problems. An English-speaking staff at reception gave us a rundown of the various facilities in the hotel.
The bedroom was big enough for two persons and two suitcases. In the room, there were two beds, a small table, two chairs, a reclining leather armchair, a TV, a kettle and two cups, two pairs of Japanese slippers and two sets of Japanese robes (yukata).
The toilet and shower were in separate compartments, with the wash basin outside these two compartments. This arrangement of a separate toilet, shower, and wash basin is quite practical especially when one person wants to use the toilet while the other is showering. The toilet compartment was very small and I had to squeeze to get in to use it.
After unpacking, I changed into my yukata and went to the hotel’s onsen on the ground floor. There were two indoor pools, one was very hot and the other was just right. I did not try the outdoor onsen as the weather was freezing cold.
After 20 minutes in the onsen, I went back to my room, changed and went to dinner.
I had a fantastic traditional Japanese dinner in a private room. Every item including dessert was delicious and the portions were more than ample.
The next morning, I had a Japanese breakfast. Many of the breakfast items were standard fare – potato chips, croissants, bread, ham and sausages. The porridge went very well with the condiments that came in a box provided by one of the staff.
Service was good. Although few staff speak English, I had no problems getting what I wanted, especially during dinner and breakfast.
I will definitely stay here again the next time I visit Yufuin.
I can see the hotel is well-managed. The staff are well-trained in greeting, check-in, escorting you to the room, prepared everything in your room before you arrive ( e.g. boiled hot water ). The dinner menu is well-planned too.
There are 2 onsens at 1st and 2nd floor. Available for men and women in turn. The 1st floor onsen is larger with better view. My room is large with beautiful mountain view. Very nice.
It’s a slightly disappointing experience to stay at Yufuin Sansuikan. Though the room is bigger than the typical Japanese hotel, the bed was old and very soft with questionable cleanness, as my friend and I might have gotten a couple bites on our legs. There are only 2 main onsens in the total. I had the Japanese dinner, the quality was just so-so. The breakfast buffet was not impressive, they provided both western and Japanese styles, and the Japanese one was slightly better than the western one. The hotel is in walking distance to the shopping streets with many restaurants and local street food/dessert, therefore location wise is pretty good.
