Ebinokogenso is a large modern and slightly institutional onsen hotel on the Ebinokogen plateau, high in the Kirishima national park. The location is peaceful and glorious: a network of trails take you to the rim of extinct volcanoes, steaming vents and crater lakes. Rooms are Japanese style. After a long trip (train-bus-bus) all the way from Kagoshima, it was a wonderful surprise to be welcomed in this hotel by the kindly manager, Mr. Yosuke Sato. We stayed two nights here in a "Japanese"-style room (i.e. futons on tatami mats). Despite speaking no Japanese the communication was totally fine. We arrived by bus at the valley interchange and the transport from the lodge was waiting for us. Similarly, we left very early in the morning and the hotel prepared a "box lunch" and transport down to...
