The resort itself
The rooms are very spacious and comfortable, however, they are not set up for skiers. there is a small alcove just inside the door where you can store your bags. the addition of some coat hooks to hang ski gear on would be a big help. As it was we had to drape our ski jackets and pants over chairs . The in room wi-fi just doesn't work. It does however, work well in the communal areas of the resort.

The main breakfast and dinner food option "The Plate" is not up to scratch for a resort that calls itself a luxury resort. We tried the breakfast once and found the options very limited. It's also very expensive at around AUD40. After that experience we just chose to have coffee and a croissant at the bakery. For dinner, the Japanese and Korean restaurants were very good and were good value. Lunch on the mountain is cafeteria style and provides hearty good value meals.

The highlight of the resort is the onsen, which is free to hotel guests. It's the best onsen I've found in Japan, with immaculately clean changing rooms, indoor and outdoor hot baths, massage showes, and a cold bath and sauna. A daily highlight!

But bizarrely, the resort charges AUD19 to use the 25m indoor swimming pool! No wonder no-one else was using it.

The staff, as you would expect in Japan are unfailingly pleasant and polite

In summary, the resort is lacking that something extra that makes it memorable.

Stayed for 7 nights, 6 days skiing February 2020.
Accommodation/Hotel:This is a well appointed resort, 5 stars, with a great onsen, pool, gym , spa and everything you might expect of a fully optioned resort. Has a number of restaurants which had good offerings, but definitely not budget orientated. The rooms , while not huge are fine and the beds great. The resort is well maintained and very clean. Rating 5 stars.

Food: Food is great. We had included breakfasts, which had the option of Western or Japanese style. The downside is that the offerings are in 2 separate restaurants which are some distance apart, so it meant that our group split into two for breakfast. That aside, the breakfast offering were good without been sensational. We also ate to the steak restaurant one night where the food was good (Waygu steak tasty but chewy) but the wait staff did struggle with the idea of Western style dining (we had to open a bottle of wine with a cork when the waiter couldnt). For dinner we ate mostly at the Japanese restaurant , as for the same price as the Western restaurant it was less crowded and had better offerings. Food options on the hill are same top and bottom and are reasonable. Rating 4 stars.

Skiing/snowboarding: Lotte Arai is a funny place. It has numerous glade areas with gates to access them, which if the snow is good , is great fun, is a challenge and opens up allot of terrain. But we had mixed weather and snow, so most of these glade areas where closed for a couple of days, which left the groomers and piste to ski on (which in Lotte Arai case isn't much). If the snow isn't good then the ski/board options are limited and you are left with going up and down a handful of runs again and again. Also there aren't a whole lot of options for beginners/intermediates.
As far as skiing goes for Lotte Arai, been there, done that, got the T Shirt, but wont be back. Rating 3 stars.

Shops: There is a souvenir store and 2 ski/outdoor shops. The ski/outdoor shop at gondola base is pretty good, the 2nd outdoor shop attached to accommodation is pretty ordinary with not much stock in a large space. The coffee shop at gondola base has good coffee. They need a general store with more options, as the souvenir store has limited stock for drinks and snacks. Rating 3 stars.

Access: Resort easily accessed from Joetsu Myoko Shinkasen Railway Station on the resorts bus. Make sue you book a bus seat and check arrival times for train and bus match. Rating 3,5 stars.

I gave this resort 4 star rating but probably more 3.5 stars.

The rooms were huge compared to the rest of Japan and were very comfortable. Resort was a little bit of a maze and difficult to move around with luggage on arrival and depature, having to move through a series of elavators and hallways to reach out wing (the nest) but there we had excellent interconnecting rooms.
There are great ski facilities here and after the second day we had amazing snow and I'm sure the experienced skiier would love this place.
But without a doubt we made a mistake going here to learn as the gentle slope used to learn on was so gentle that you could barely move and had no oppurtunity to practice a turn or anthing other than pushing yourself along with poles and unfortunately the slopes they identified for beginners were so steep you had to have had some skill to decend. I did so with high speed crashes but the rest of family couldn't.
Again this would be a fantasic place to go if you know how to ski but definately not a place to go and try and learn.
It didn't help also that all professiional lessons were booked out and we had to travel to another resort to get lessons so be wary of booking ahead, but again I seriously wouldn't go here to learn.

We are currently half way through our 3 night stay and cannot wait to leave. This place is all glitz and glam on the outside but it doesn’t take much to see through the facade and realise this a cheaply run money hungry organisation. It very much feels like being on a cruise ship, with small rooms and set meal times (5pm or 7:30pm for dinner).

The location is quite out of the way with no local village to provide external entertainment or food options so you’re kinda forced into the over priced resort options. We ate at the Western food restaurant which was a Sizzler-style buffet, served on paper placements with plastic napkins for ~$100 AUD per person. Breakfast was very average, priced at $45 per person. Where possible, we survived on protein bars and vending machine drinks.

English is not well spoken here at all. Most staff have a few rehearsed lines specific to their job but are unable to understand/respond if spoken back to in English. There is a general unfriendly and unhelpful vibe here, possibly part of the language barrier, however we never previously experienced these kind of communication issues even in regional villages.

Snow quality unfortunately didn’t make up for the accommodation failings. In fact, it was the worst ski resort we’ve ever been to. The lifts and runs are poorly laid out and even more poorly signed. One of the biggest problems is the very old gondola that is the only lift running from the base to the mid mountain. This results in hundreds of people lining up in the morning, leaving us waiting 45mins to get on the gondola plus another tedious 20min ride to mid-mountain. You often have to walk a way from the lift to get to the start of the run. The runs themselves are narrow, icy and ungroomed - even after a couple days of heavy snow. Overall it’s really just not worth the expense and lift lines. And at the end of the day, there isn’t even a drying room at this supposed ski resort. Absolutely insane. We gave up and just tramped back up to our room in snowy boots. Maybe enough ice on the carpet will help them realise what’s missing.

In summary, please take this as a warning and stay away from Lotte Arai. It really isn’t worth the money for either the accommodation or snow. We have been very disappointed here and will not be back. There is much better value, culture and snow to be had elsewhere in Japan!

We came here last year and was greeted by so much snow it was hard to walk around so we came back! Despite substantially less snow this season we stayed at the resort for 10 days. We love it here mainly because the rooms are spacious and luxurious and clean and the convenience of ski in and ski out can’t be beat! Myoko Sports which runs the ski school at Lotte Arai is wonderful we can’t speak highly enough for the quality of the teaching and the attentiveness you’re the kids was wonderful. The staff tried really hard to be helpful and attentive and Kenneth helped us a great deal with our accomodation needs and suggestions. The lift passes are reasonably priced and ski rental being on site was great. The onsen which has indoor and outdoor soaking tubs is fantastic and the best way to end the day and soothe sore muscles.

Although a lot of people have complained about the food for us it was fine considering we ended up eating a full breakfast and then having a light lunch. Most days the kids were happy to eat an early dinner at the canteen and we loved the Korean and the steak restaurant. The Japanese buffet for dinner is excellent and the lunch sets are very good. Our only suggestion would be it would be nice to add maybe 2 more quick eats/easy option, maybe a casual sushi bar and or a quick and easy ramen joint would be perfect. We didn’t make trips down to town this year because 20-30 minutes each way to town was just a bit too far for the little kids to deal with after a day of skiing.

Currently staying at this resort and can't help but feel it is nothing but gilt- all shiny to look at but underneath just old. The gondola line was an hour long, followed by terrible signage on the slopes. Narrow and crowded runs ruin the experience. As with other reviews I agree that the food is very subpar, with cheap plastic tastes to most things I've tried so far. Much like the gondola line, waiting to get a coffee is equally tedious.

The rooms are fairly basic, with the nice stench of cigarette smoke wafting in from time to time, random phone calls in the night and a heating system that is either off (freezing), or on (standing on the surface of the sun). There does not seem to be an in between.

The staff are however more friendly that reported elsewhere.

It is fairly isolated so bring a car if you do come, so you can drive away asap.

We made three visits to Lotte Arai this season. Two hours on Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo station to Joetsumyoko station, where a free shuttle bus takes you 30 mins to the resort.

Hotel accommodation is comfortable, new and clean. There are free lockers for storage. You can ski in/ out.

We hired Salomon equipment onsite. Service was efficient and polite.

For beginners, there is a ski school staffed by English speaking instructors.

The gondola is a short walk (50m) from the hotel. The runs are 25% beginners, 40% intermediate and the rest advanced.

Snow was excellent. Especially up in the mountains. We never had to queue for chairlifts or gondola. If you love skiing, and just want to ski all day, it is perfect.

The onsen located in the hotel is clean, beautiful with super bathing facilities.

Booked in advance online, rates were good value to other 4- 5 star resorts. The mostly Japanese staff are polite and pleasant.

So, what are the cons?

Food choices are limited and the restaurants are expensive. There are no shops or restaurants nearby. All-day dining is available. There is a small bakery and a cafe in the gondola station which takes cash payments.

Ski passes are expensive, at 6,000 yen for the first day and 5,500 yen thereafter. However, as the resort was very quiet, we felt it was ok. Nonetheless, we heard Sundays after a particularly good snowfall can be busy when locals will come in droves.

Overall, we have enjoyed our stays here and plan to return next season.

Firstly please don't read too much into all the negative reviews, we had a stellar time!! Spent a week here with family, parents, inlaws, friends and our 2yo son. Ages varied from 65yo,37yo, 30yo, 22yo and 2yo. Had the best week of our lives, amazing mountain and snow fall!! Mountain great for all abiliities of boarding and skiing, off piste options also. Comfortable spacious hotel, great food choices, value for money through luxury escape packages. Restaurant pricing on par with Australia. Buffet and alacarte available. Alternative activities when visibility wasn't great, rock climbing, trampolines, indoor pool, onsen, spa and tubing. Short free shuttle into village for alternative food and drink options. Can room charge throughout mountain. Onsite winery, gift store, pool, onsen, spa and great library for post dinner drinks, karaoke for a fun filled night out. All round friendly, helpful staff. We flew Qantas with luxury escapes and then booked a private car with driver from airport to mountain for 8pax including luggage and our boards through asia car service. Highly recommend this option over train, less stressful with kids and price comparative. 5 stars we will be coming back again. Thank you to all the amazing staff at Lotte Arai

I visited this ski resort on 30th jan and there was hardly any snow on the mountain and the hotel outdoor were just like bare ground with grass. However, it started snowing on that night and next morning, the outdoor was covered with 20cm snow and the mountain top was covered with 4 ft snow. This was really amazing and i understood why people prasied this ski resort about their snow.
The hotel facilities are very good and their jap and korean restaurants are highly recommended. You must try the sushi counter and the dinner set is around 15000 jpy per person. Unfortunately the counter can take only 7 people and you should book in advance. I wonder if the hotel is full house, their facilities will not be able to accomodate the crowd. Go in non peak season and weekday, you will sure enjoy the place!

The hotel should not be allowed to run under the current circumstances. Clearly hotel (especially the restaurants) are short of people, and the quality of service is terrible. As for the restaurant that serves “western” food, even the quality of the food has plummeted. There was a warm starter with salmon, but the smell was horrible and quality was really low. I really enjoyed the time I stayed during the skiing season, so it was such a shame. Probably never coming back, since the family holiday was pretty much ruined.
