Loved this hotel. It was central and nearly opposite Myoko Snowsports and a very short walk to the lifts.
The hotel was spacious and we had the Japanese style rooms with futons which I loved.
The staff were absolutely amazing and the breakfast’s delicious.
I would come back here if I were to return to Myoko.

Having now travelled to Japan skiing four times already (with the fifth already booked), we’ve come to appreciate that relatively few foreign guests seem to provide reviews of their stay at Japanese hotels; thus it is often hard to gauge a hotel’s quality. In Oyado Furuya’s case, there was a good number of Japanese, Australian and American guests staying as guests when we were there and had they bothered to provide a review, I’m sure they’d also be recommending this hotel. We’d certainly be happy to stay at Oyado Furuya again.

The room we chose was Japanese in style, with tatami mats and separate bathroom. It was ample in size for the three of us (myself, my wife & teenage son). The room was warm, clean & comfortable. All floor levels are serviced by a lift, including the ski locker / drying room located on the lower ground floor.

Efficient management is evident, with complimentary latte available in the lounge, terrific food in the dining room for breakfast and dinner, and happy / helpful staff. Whilst many of the Japanese staff are decent at speaking English, for the past few snow seasons, the owners have specifically employed a native English speaking member of staff (Australian) who is well skilled in speaking Japanese and who can readily assist with any translation issues; though this was never a problem for us.

The hotel’s onsen (hot bath) are also terrific. The separate male & female onsen are located on the upper floor, with different styles and views. Each have in-door and outdoor onsen and are a real indulgence to relax in after a hard day’s skiing.

The multi-course Keiseki style Japanese dinner is a treat and well worth the adventure to try. Other local dining options include Udon-no-Fu (beneath Pomodoro Italian opposite), which serves terrific (& very inexpensive) apple tempura as a “special” desert (not on the printed menu). Otherwise, try Kei, which serves a range of sensational meals in nice surroundings.

Myoko Kogen has four separate ski areas that are in close proximity and serviced by a free shuttle bus. Akakura Onsen has the best choice of accommodation and restaurants, with Oyado Furuya proving to be well located on the main street and only a short walk from the ski lift and free bus to neighbouring ski fields. We especially enjoyed skiing at Suginohara as it has excellent lifts (a 3 kilometre long 6 person gondola + 2 x 1.7 kilometre covered quad chairs), long runs, extensive grooming and relatively few people.

In all, a very good place to stay, with the benefit great food and terrific options for skiing / boarding.

It was my families first time in Japan and it was fantastic. We travelled with four families. Everyone was friendly and always offering to help. It's the perfect place for a family ski holiday but I don't think you would come here with your mates for skiing and boozing. We only skied in the 2 areas closest to our hotel. It appeared to be predominantly locals on the slopes with buses arriving for the weekend. The snow is amazing but the slopes were never busy. The queues were nonexistent. The slopes were primarily beginner and intermediate runs although off piste powder looked incredible. You frequently saw skiers and boarders off piste knee deep in powder in the trees as you were going up a chairlift. You often find yourself skiing alone and no one else can be seen. It snowed nonstop but without any wind. By the end we couldn't see out of our hotel window because the snow was higher than window.

Ankura Onsen is apparently the main village in Myoko Kogen but still very small. You don't come here for the shopping or the nightlife. There isn’t much to buy - limited gloves and goggles and that was about it. The food is predominantly Japanese with a few variations. On the slopes for lunch a curry & rice is Y1000 and 500ml Asahi beer Y600. Many of the restaurants have no English but most seem to have a basic menu available in English.

The hotel was fantastic. There were two staff, Yoshi and Naomi, who were English speakers and always eager to help. The hotel picked up and dropped off from train station although it was a logistical nightmare with 15 of us. We had a traditional room for the four of us where we rolled up beds each morning which made a small room surprisingly spacious. There was a western toilet with the ubiquitous electronic controls and a tiny bathroom. There was no bar but the hotel seemed happy for us to gather for a drink in seats in the foyer after dinner. The hotel had an excellent set dinner menu for Y3150 but you had to book in advance. The hotel has segregated onsens which are fantastic after skiing all day (and even before skiing all day).

Cash is king - even the lift pass booth only accepted cash. The hotel accepted visa and so did Myoko Snowsports and the Post Office had an ATM. Y1000 notes rule the world as everything can be bought from a vending machine. Myoko Snowsports offered ski hire and ski lessons with English speaking instructors. Myoko Snowsports was only 200m from our hotel. Tom and Nozumi and their team at Myoko Snowsports were exceptional. We hired everything including clothes and it was excellent - it was good quality and current season. When we arrived there were only scheduled ski classes for children (i.e. no adult classes or snowboarding classes) and the private lessons were booked out. We had a group of 4 families including 7 parents and their 8 offspring ranging from 6 years old to adult of which many were first timers. We had only prebooked lessons for 2 children but Tom and Nozumi went above and beyond to ensure we were all looked after. Their service was exceptional. Myoko Snowsports also sell lift tickets and you can pay with a credit card. Tom was happy to communicate by email for months before we arrived so I suggest you check out their website and book ahead.

We will be back!

A very friendly, helpful, comfortable and true Japanese experience. The ryokan employs one experienced English speaker who is, at present, Koichi. He was so attentive, ensuring we knew our way around the hotel's facilities, helping us frequently with local information and answering all our questions; giving us a wonderful insight into Japanese life and culture. He became a friend during our week's stay. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, but with the option of a western style bed, which we chose. In every other respect our room was traditional Japanese. The beds were wide and comfortable and the room warm with heated floor. There is a raised table setting at the window where you can sit to relax, feet in the heated foot well and specially fitted doona wrapped around you while you sip green tea and watch the world pass by outside. There is a big bath house on the top floor which was perfect after a day's skiing and even included an outdoor bath; great when the snow is drifting lightly down around you. Japanese and western style breakfasts available but we chose the Japanese. It is certainly worth having dinner there at least once. We did twice! It is a traditional Japanese banquet style. Koichi explained all the courses and the food as it came (as he did for breakfast). Koichi, with a driver, met us at the station on our arrival and drove us back to the station when we departed which was very much appreciated. Myokogen is easy to reach by train from Tokyo via Nagano. We actually took the train direct from Narita, through Tokyo for a comfortable half day trip. Amy from Myokogen Tourist Office writes excellent English and is outstandingly helpful in organising a holiday here, booking Furuya (or elsewhere), answering questions and giving information on ski hire etc. stay@myoko.tv www.myoko.tv Myoko Snowsports is run by an Australian and his Japanese wife and all the staff speak good English and are wonderfully helpful. There are a number of ski slopes close by, either in walking distance or on the shuttle bus. Our pick was Suginohara for wide slopes with no crowds (but avoid the crowded week-ends). There are some very good Japanese restaurants close by but unfortunately they do not ban smoking. The only non smoking restaurant, apart from the hotel, was across the road, Pomidoro, an Italian restaurant which was very good. We highly recommend Furuya. It brought us so much closer to Japanese life.

We stayed 6 nights at Oyado Furuya for a ski trip and was very happy over all with our stay. The best thing about this Ryokan is its location -- right in the middle of the town, so every shop, restaurant ski rentals, and also the ski lifts are all within a few minutes walk from your accommodation. Akakura is not big anyway, but I feel the majority of the hotels are towards one side of the town, whereas Furuya is more centrally located.

This is a small place, I think 12-13 rooms in total so it has a more intimate feel that some of the other bigger hotels in town. We got 3 standard rooms between the 6 of us, 2 were western style rooms and 1 was Japanese style. I would recommend the Japanese style room over western style as it feels much more spacious. The western standard room's layout with the divider makes it feel rather cramped. Of course if you pay more and book the larger room types this won't be an issue. With the standard twin western style room, the heater fan is right next to one of the beds and it blows right at you while you are sleeping. So one person is going to be much hotter than the other. The beds are super comfy though and the blankets very thick so we were ok to turn the heater off for most the night.

Breakfast also comes in 2 styles -- western and Japanese, and you will have to state which you would like the day before. It's very decent hearty breakfast and we alternated between the 2 styles during our stay but found that within each style it does not change much from one day to another.

English is not a problem here as there are 3-4 Australian staff/interns who can give you all the information about the Ryokan facilities, ski passes, rentals etc. For facilities, Furuya has two onsen rooms, one for men and one for women. They do switch them so that you can experience both rooms if you go in at different time of the day. But as I personally like to use the onsen at the end of the day before going to bed, I just got to go to the same room everyday. Would prefer it if they would switch it by the day of the week instead, so that I could still go at the same time and get to use both rooms.

There is a storage and drying room on the bottom floor. I prefer bringing my skis back here rather than leaving them at the rental place as it's more central to all the lifts in town, and if you decide to go night skiing you can do it on a whim rather than having to decide beforehand. Another nice plus here is that you can send your clothes out for laundry and it's 1000 yen each time regardless of the amount, comes back within the same day if you send it out in the morning.

We all loved Akakura and Myoko Kogen which totally exceeded all expectations. We go to different ski destinations in Japan every year and this area is our favourite so far. Oyado Furuya is a solid choice with good value and we would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to discover wonderful Myoko Kogen.

We stayed here for 5 days and had a great time.

This is a traditional Japanese Hotel and we booked the room with the private Onsen, which is great after a long day of skiing.

They also have a big Onsen for the hotel guests on the top floor.

The hotel is 5 min by foot away from the next lift.

The traditional Japanese restaurant on the ground floor is one of the best restaurants in the area.

The Oyado Furuya is a 4 star hotel in the lovely town of Myoko Kogen.
The on site restaurant offers excellent buffet style breakfast and an extensive dinner menu.
Although this is an expensive restaurant compared to others in town it offers a higher standard od food and service than most.
Highly recommended.

It had all the traditional amenities of a good ryokan, old world and beautifully maintained, yet modern enough with everything you need for a ski trip. Because we stayed here for almost a week, the simple (and clean) bath halls became a bit boring, as were the delicious but repeated breakfasts. If you are staying long, don't book all your dinners in house, explore the town. The staff will give very good suggestions.

We stayed here in Feb 2014 in a room on level 3 with our private onsen. The room was Japanese style with tatami but extremely comfortable, warm and well cleaned. The private onsen is fantastic. Indeed we never felt the need for the shared onsen. Highly recommended.

Pros
- great hospitality from the Japanese owners and the two young foreign english speaking helpers
- excellent location. Short walk to the ski lifts and very central to the restaurants in town
- private onsen was great after a day skiing
- pickup and drop off at train station was no issue
- good food and well priced local sake
- good secure drying room for ski equipment

Cons
- Japanese breakfast got a bit tiring without much variety. Easy solution was to change to western breakfast. Overall, food was homely, not gourmet....still delicious but this is a small town with local family run kitchens
- prepayment, ie deposit requirements were annoying as you had to SWIFT transfer, however, they provide a free dinner to say thanks, so well and truly compensated for the transfer charge.
