Onsen is lovely, with delightful amenities. Open overnight, it offers a great respite soak after a long day of ski. It is within a 10min walk to the ski lifts (with 3 kids along) and <5min to main street where everything is.
Pacing expectations that this is a traditional older establishment, the rooms were very warm, clean, spacious and comfortable. Breakfast spread was thoughtful and accommodated a variety of preferences. There is a huge bar, warm fireplace and spacious sitting area.
Meiko and the other older lady personify the image of gracious, sincere and traditional service where they know your needs and bring heart into what they serve. A causal enquiry led to phone calls, reservations and a very last min cake. Upon hearing the kids were unwell, they offered warm food and even brought them up to our rooms. Very much like how a thoughtful and loving grandparent would during stayovers.
Dinner with reservations was a delightful and amazing spread. Home brewed plum wine is a must!
This winter was cold and blizzardy. But this place filled our hearts over the week with comforts of home, gentle warmth and impeccable service. a sincerity that will follow us for many seasons to come.
It has been our privilege to stay here. Thank you.
Our family of four (including two adult children) spent a week here and we LOVED it.
The traditional Japanese bedrooms are so comfortable with their own bathrooms, great heating, really comfortable bedding and huge window that looked right out over the Akakura ski resort.
The highlight is definitely the owner/ manageress Meiko and her amazing team of staff. They cannot do enough for you, Meiko speaks such good english and can help plan and book anything you need including taxis, local restaurants and even train tickets.
The buffet breakfast every morning offers everything from french pastries to english bacon and eggs as well as japanese and asian options, and the bar and lounge area with a great open log fire is the best place to finish your day.
There is also a great indoor and outdoor onsen, this place has everything you need.
It's at the end of the main restaurant and bar strip, and within 10 minutes walk of two chairlifts.

There is a pool table which is pretty funny as it hasnt seen anything close to a level for many years.
Mieko the manager of Kogakuro was simply fantastic and she so enhanced our holiday before arriving and while we were there, with advice on local eating places, transport and many helpful tips. Her contacts and knowledge of the local area are exceptional.
Breakfasts were holesome and fresh. There are internal/external hotel hot spring Onsens that are also a winner and which are accessable at hours to suit a ski trip.

Great hospitality, people always happy to assist to make your stay pleasurable. The snow was magical and the surrounding town, restaurants and bars too notch!
We will definitely be back. Again!
Overall a wonderful place to stay!
Onsite onsen is wonderful after a big day on the snow.
The location is perfect, close to everything & ski lift.
Prompt pick up & shuttle service.
Highly recommend.
Whilst the accommodation is dated, that only adds to the charm of the place. Our room looked like it hadn't been touched since the 60s - with orange carpet, patterned wallpaper - but it was clean, warm and extremely spacious.
The breakasts consisted of both Japanese and Western selections - with a daily regional speciality. It was such a nice way to start the day, sitting in our Yukata sipping on some miso soup, looking at the snow falling outside.
There is a great lounge area with a log fire, bar and pool table. It's the perfect spot for reading a book in the later hours and chilling out.
The lounge area is only trumped by the onsen as the best way to unwind at Kogakuro. There are both indoor and outdoor options. The daily onsen was definitely one of the highlights of the stay. Your skied-out muscles will thank-you.
Each evening we came back from skiing, there was hot local treats on offer in the foyer - from sweat rice and sake tea to rice crackers popped freshly over the coals.
The hotel location is ideal. There is a good selection of restaurants and small bars right at its doorstep. It is also a short wander to the chairlifts. The bus stop is also very close if you decide to venture to the other resorts like Suginohara or Seki Onsen (definitely worthwhile trips).
Kogakuro is not a five star hotel - but it leaves you with a five star japanese experience!
The hotel is cozy, but not small. There's a communal recreation area with a wood fire burning, and the onsen has an indoor and outdoor bath of differing temperatures. During the seven day stay, the onsen saw me nude no less than 14 times. There's nothing better to warm you up for a long day of snowboarding in the morning, and to soothe your ravaged body in the evening.
The room we stayed in was a good size, and was toasty warm the whole time. Our soft western backs were hardly any match for the futons we slept on, but for me personally it was only the first night that I really felt it. After that, I slept like a log.
Let's talk about breakfast. Some people might discount the importance of the first meal of the day, but there's a word for these people. Fools. Especially in a town like Akakura, you want to make sure you've got breakfast sorted. There aren't many options outside of your accommodation to get something early in the morning. We've stayed in other places in other towns where the included breakfast was a smoked kipper, a small dish of pickled vegetables and a bowl of rice. Now I'm not complaining about that since it is Japan, however it was a delight every morning at Kogakuro to enjoy the breakfast buffet there. They had traditional Japanese food, but they also serve eggs, sausages, fruit salad, cereal and some of the best pancakes you'll have. They were seriously good. So, great breakfast.
The place itself is located a fairly short walk from one of the ski areas, and a shuttle bus stop to one of the other areas is just across the road. For the Suginohara area, the hotel staff drove us there so we never had to break a sweat getting to the lifts.
The staff were all fantastic as well. Super friendly, and very accommodating in every regard.
Enjoyed our stay and would stay again no question.
The staff were more than accommodating with every request and without even having to ask - they offered to run us to the train station on our departure.
Mieko (owner) speaks good English and Mitch (Australian employee and bar tender) were able to cover all questions & requests.
The rooms (traditional tatami room) were very large and comfortable. Indoor and outdoor onsens were good -not as hot as ones we have experienced elsewhere in Hakuba and Nozawa.
Breakfast was sensational with so much food (freshly fried eggs to order) , pancakes with strawberries and cream and fresh smoothies (one type each day with a mixture of ingredients - one day was apple, honey, kiwi fruit and yoghurt while another day was apple, honey, and beetroot).
Walking to restaurants was easy and Mieko would do the bookings for us each day - even though they had there own traditional Japanese dinner in house.
The lounge area had a built in fireplace and lounge chairs to relax and have a beverage or two in - the bar is also in this same area and open for 'Happy Hour' each day.
Definitely recommend.
