Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Woodpecker and Kuma Lodges are exceptional in every way: unbeatable location closest to the ski slopes, comfortable rooms, very clean facilities, great breakfast, staff who go above and beyond their duties to be helpful and obliging. Always a friendly welcome and a willingness to help with enquires, restaurant bookings or simply directions to the nearest Onsen! Après after a big day out was always fun in the relaxed atmosphere.
Highly recommend .

Took the family for our first ever trip to Japan and could not be happier with the choices we made. The Kuma location doesn’t get any better, waking to views looking over the mountain and everything in short walking distance made things so much easier ( especially with small kids in the snow). Kuma staff were outstanding in helping organizing activities and transport etc, Kuma delivered everything we wanted on our holiday. Definitely recommend 👍

Our first visit to Kuma Lodge! We were so impressed with how close it was to the ski fields. Our son had an amazing time with the other kids we met at the lodge. There was a huge basement area they could all hang out in. We loved meeting the manager/s and they really looked after us, making reservations for dinner, recommending places to eat and visit and cooking us a delicious breakfast!

We stayed here with our two children aged 5 and 7 years. It was our first trip to the snow together and one we will never forget. I have never skied outside of Australia before so was blown away by how beautiful the snow was and that Kuma was right on the slopes - it made it a lot easier with two young children being so close to the slopes.
Kuma was really comfortable, clean and felt like our home for the week. There was a really nice group atmosphere and plenty of other children for ours to play with (there's a great TV and games room downstairs). We loved pizza and hot chocolates at Aki's which is a two minute walk from Kuma. Staff were super friendly and helpful - especially with ski hire which was great given we were with small children. Can't wait to go back soon!

We stayed at Kuma Lodge during Christmas and NYE 2019. We had a fabulous stay at the lodge made all the better by the very helpful staff.
The location of the lodge is second to none. It's located about 40 metres from the slopes and next to one of the main bars and ski schools for the resort of Madarao. The lodge was very clean and tidy. Fluffy towels and brand new sheets were provided. Breakfast is provided which is more than ample to set you up for a days skiing.
The lodge staff assist with arranging everything from ski passes to restaurant bookings.
All in all we had a great stay and will return again!

We stayed here for 3 weeks at both Kuma Lodge and Woodpecker. Both lodges are ski in, ski out. Can't recommend these two lodges enough. A special thanks to the staff. The staff are above and beyond. 11/10 service. The breakfast is amazing and the rooms are spacious. Each morning my wife and I would wake up looking at the view of Madarao Kogen, kicking off the day with the best vibes. I will be back and will recommend this to anyone who visits this area.

This lodge is in the perfect spot I mean your not going to get better! However, it's the small things that make the difference that gives it that wow factor. The rooms are very comfortable small but that's Japan. The guests are lovely and the crowd that it attracts. I am not going to pull it down but it needs a soul and a cosy feeling outside the rooms. Breakfast is basic and while they try there is sooooo much more that can be done.
