The water taxi dropped us off in a rainstorm on what looked like a deserted beach, and sure enough there was a road and a bus stop, and a little store where we found Elena, who offered to give us a reduced rate in one of the two Cabanas at her place. It was comfortable and well furnished. She is an awesome cook, and though the restaurant was closed for vacation, she offered to cook for us and we joined her husband and their friends for wonderful food and lively conversation. Memorable: the big toads, volunteering in the library, learning to make coconut oil, the most gorgeous beach you can imagine for swimming and running, with maybe 10 people out there in the whole 17 K during the rainy season. The best part was meeting Elena, a terrific networker speaking both Spanish and English, she made sure we had a wonderful time. Bring good bug repellent!
We will be back!

We stayed with Mark and Steph at the Oceano for the Jazz festival last year and had a great time. Not only were the rooms always clean and well kept but the restaurant is the best on the peninsula! Everyone would eat there for one meal and then they would be back for every meal following that. The Torontonian couple are great people who treat their guests with the utmost in respect and become quick friends. Their staff are courteous and friendly and enjoy a good laugh. For a 2 room place its a gem.

We needed to stay at an air-conditioned place in Playa Zancudo. This is only one of two places offering it. Only other option is the Zancudo Lodge, but Oceano is about 5 times cheaper.

Rooms are very basic, but clean. Beach is a one-minute walk from the back of the property. Brad was extremely helpful and organized transportation, as well as helped us out with the many questions we had about the area, since we'd never been there. Rating is based both on the room, and on Brad's helpfulness and willing to please.

We had some organized events planned by friends that live there, so never was able to eat at the restaurant, which attracts locals. Looked interesting.

As long as the place continues to be maintained well, this is great for those who MUST have air-conditioning.

Room Tip: There are only two rooms, and I think both are the same. Make sure the air-conditioning works well.

My husband and I met Elena the owner on the water taxi from Golfito to Zancudo and without even knowing she had boarding she answered many questions about the area. She brought us to her place which offers cabin style rooms, with air conditioner, a small local channel TV, very clean and on the beach. We felt right at home with her. She places special attention to detail and goes beyond expectations to make your stay is comfortable. She has two cabins only and the restaurant downstairs, which serves delicious, affordable, Costarican and American meals. We were tire from a long bus ride from Panama city and were looking for some peace and quiet. We felt as if we had come home to Grandma. She is well connected with the community of Zancudo for tours and even charity if you're interested. We will have great memories of Zancudo because of her.

Just a wonderful place to stay. The hotel has two air-conditioned, roomy cabinas that were CLEAN. The on sight kitchen, open air with a thatched roof, served excellent food and had many local customers. The staff was always ready to help and the owner was a wealth of information on what to do and how to get there. Playa Zancudo is a superb, laid back and relaxing destination. And you will not be wrong staying at Oceana.

We went to Playa Zancudo for a week of relaxation, sun and beach and found exactly what we were looking for. We spent 6 days at Oceano - there are 2 nice, comfy cabinas with AC that was much appreciated. There is free wifi throughout and it was lightning fast. The beach is only meters away and there's also a nice shady sandy spot under swaying palms where you can relax in a hammock or lounge chair. The bar and restaurant is a welcoming outdoor spot with gorgeous handmade tables and a nice tropical feel. I highly recommend the specialty, Pescado Cordon Bleu, which is a great local interpretation of the classic dish but made with fresh fish fillet. Pizzas are also entirely homemade and excellent. Beers are cold and cheap, fruity cocktails are also large and refreshing. To top of the meal, you can get a scoop of ice cream, as Oceano has the only ice cream parlor in town. The new owners Elena and Kevin are super friendly and helpful and can also help arrange anything for you, from fishing trips to water taxi rides or excursions elsewhere. We had a great stay at Oceano and enjoyed the food, the cabina, the beach and the great hospitality.

This was my first time to the beaches of Costa Rica. I knew it would be warm, or hot for me. I was looking at Zancudo Beach as it was close to Panama where I am living. I could not find a place to stay that had air-conditioning (my #1 priority) until I found Oceano Cabinas. There were only 2 rooms to rent when I was there last year, so be sure to call ahead and reserve with credit card. The owners are just wonderful, catering to every whim and really outdid themselves. The restaurant is open air with a large thatched roof overhead. Kids on bikes brought in fresh fish just caught by their dad to sell, so thats what I had for dinner. All the food was very good and I was there for 3 days. The rooms are not fancy, but they are very nice for the bohemian beach which is pretty much all of Zancudo from what I could see. The entrance to the beach is unbelievably pretty. Took a zillion pictures. Zancudo beach is a beautiful place, but it is not fancy. This 'hotel' comes in first because of the wonderful owner and staff, good food and the air-conditioning. Also the prices are reasonable. My one dissappointment was you could not see the ocean from the room.

My husband and I went on our second trip to Costa Rica and decided that this time we would go a little further off the beaten track - are we ever glad we did. After hearing some other travelers’ mention the fantastic time they had down south we decided to give it a shot.
It was an amazing trip from the moment we landed in Golfito. We LOVED the Oceano Cabinas - the owners were AMAZING; totally helpful, were full of information, giving us tips on what to see while we were there. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable and the food at the restaurant was hands down the best on the strip. We would recommend this place to anyone visiting. Enjoy your stay!

We live in Panama and decided to take a last minute vacation across the border. We could not have picked a better place to stay. The owners, Mark and Stephanie, were friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. They were always around to answer questions and make suggestions of things to do in the area. They even got us in to the very first and exclusive “Tsunami Party”. The restaurant is a local favorite, and the food was outstanding. The portions were huge, and the staff very friendly. The rooms were a good size, very clean and comfortable. We highly recommend taking the bicycles out for a ride on the beach or just laying around in one of their hammocks. Out of our travels all over Central America, this is one of our new favorite places.

This was our second trip to Zancudo and we stayed at the Oceano last trip also . My wife and I were traveling with friends , same as last time , and we had both rooms booked for 7 days . Brad is the latest owner and was very accommodating and willing to help . The property hasn't changed much since we were there last . The bar/restaurant is at the front of the property with 2 rooms over the kitchen which are accessed from the back .

The restaurant hours are 11am to 9pm and the food is phenomenal ! They have an extensive menu and most items are hand made on site . Pizzas were awesome with hand made crusts . They make their own sauce . Food preparation is not fast , because of the hands on nature , but it's worth every minute of the wait . Beer and drinks were good and cold .

The property is narrow and a short walk along the path to the back ends at what must be the widest , smoothest , black sand beach in Costa Rica , at least at low tide ! It goes on forever and there is next to nobody on it. The temperatures in the shade were 38°C, and 48°C in the sun.

There are several other bars and restaurants in the area but we were hard pressed to try any because the food was so good at the Oceano . There are also several other places to stay but most of them don't have air conditioning which is an asset at the Oceano . The grocery store across the street sells water in large jugs.

We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it if you need a relaxing , lay back getaway .
