The staff were excellent, the room was excellent as was the bathroom. The menu was very well thought out and the wines to accompany worked very well. A most enjoyable stay in a very beautiful part of the country.

We stayed at the lodge for three days for our anniversary, the welcome was friendly and the staff did everything to make our stay as perfect as possible. We had the seven course taster menu with the sommelier choices, the food was delightful and interesting, the dine was a limited due to the fact that it was predominately fish based,...

We found this lovely looking place on the internet, it is in the countryside and very relaxing....unless as we found out after arrival you are in the area from Oct onwards, the hunting season. The place is back to its main use as a hunting lodge were people come from all over the world to shoot out defenceless animals and...

Dear SJS, The true story is that you stayed with us on a Thursday night and on Friday could not stop singing our praises so much so that you wanted to stay another night. We told you the rate and offered a small discount. This discount was not big enough and you told us that you would pay almost half...

We found this place in the AA guide and since it is near Ludlow we decided to give it a go. The rooms we saw or stayed in are quirky and clean, though not what you might call cosy. It very hard (but not impossible) to make a rough stone walled room look much better than a prison cell. But...

Superlatives make dull reading AND this hotel will get so busy we will never get in again...Old Downton Lodge is just spectacular. There that's it. Now quick! book to go so you too can enjoy the atmosphere of ancient quiet tranquility buried in the Shropshire rural idyll. (Not so tranquil for the hundreds of young pheasants scattering in front of...

We book here for a midweek break, lovely setting and gardens. Room was really nice & had plenty of space with a four poster bed etc. The staff are very attentive and could not be more helpful. Not too much going on to be fair on a rainy summers day so we made the most of the room and chilled...

We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate my husbands significant birthday. Everything was perfect, quiet beautiful courtyard garden to have a cup of tea in when we arrived. Our room was delightfully furnished and very comfortable with all mod cons. We had the 5 course tasting menu on the first night and the 7 course the following night. Both were...

Sometimes reviews can be misleading. I chose our romantic night away on the basis of previous reviews. I can happily say that all the previous 5 star reviews were justly awarded. This place is down to earth, friendly, immensely well kept. The rooms are immaculate with every detail considered. Dinner was breathtaking. We have eaten in a number of Michelin...

We returned & stayed here for two lovely nights,19th & 20th August in Room 2...simply put its a lovely place...lovely surroundings....great food...nice wine and just great staff all superbly run by Wellim & Pippa, one small little thing though, we had the langoustine with one of our courses and just wish we had more of it on the dish, BUT...

Stayed with my husband and our baby daughter for a romantic getaway. Our four-poster room was very warm and comfortable, and it was lovely to have a relaxing bath in the warmth before dinner. Dinner was a 5 or 6 course tasting menu which was on the whole delicious and we both enjoyed. Our baby daughter slept soundly in the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Fascinating. Intriguing. Mesmeric. Pure escapism just seven miles from Ludlow, in some respects, Old Downton Lodge defies description: It is not a hotel, nor is it really a bed and breakfast or a restaurant with rooms. Each of the nine bedrooms are unforgettable – stylishly converted from historic farm buildings surrounding a flower bedecked courtyard, each is quirky, luxurious, packed with history and designed to make you smile. The hospitality is relaxed and genuine. The food – served in a dramatic dining hall - is exceptional and the wine list inspired. ... more   less
