Detailed Reviews
Thanks for a great stay. We loved our room and the facilities on offer. It was great being able to get our breakfast (delicious food left out!) when it suited, and also it worked well being able to use the barbeque and prepare an evening meal. Our hosts were helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
The lighting in our room was not the best but apart from that, everything was perfect. Highly recommended.

A return trip to one of our favorite places in NZ. Good size room, ace bathroom and neat set up for diy breakfast. Close to lots of interesting stuff to do (Farewell Spit is worth the cost), and good advice from Trish and Mike, cheerful bunch of fellow guests and a big soppy dog.

We spent three nights a Twin Waters Lodge. The hosts offer fine accomodation and good, friendly and very helpful service in very tasteful surroundings. Their table also forms a fine setting for an informal encounter wit other guest over a glass og wine and a joint dinner.
Moreover, the lodge is the best thinkable station for tours in the beautiful Golden Bay area.

I don't quite understand the positive reviews about this place. Yes, the location is perfect for a visit of Farewell spit, breakfast is ok, and they have a nice shower. But on the other side: the rooms are dark (at daytime), small and uncomfortable. There is a roadside terrace, but no furniture to sit outside. The beds are tiny. I'm 1.85m, average size, and my feet were hanging 10 cm out of the bed. Combined with the fact that there were no curtains on the windows (only partly shades) and there were a lot of mosquito's, I found it impossible to sleep.
The host is helpful, but grumpy, not very friendly and flexible, and rather intrusive. I witnessed her rudely sending away an asian couple who had a reservation but brought there wellbehaving child: "we don't have children here!", making racist remarks afterwards.
The host asked me when it would be convenient for me to have breakfast, which was 8:00 because of the tour I booked. She gave me the evil eye, and she set breakfast at 8:30, because the other guest had breakfast that time as well...
I had a reservation for two nights, but because I was simply wrecked after a night not being able to sleep, I decided to escape this place to a comfortable b&b the second night. I was nevertheless charged for both nights, no appologies made. Money well spend though, I pay happily 250 dollar every day not to have to sleep there.
By far the worst b&b I've been to in my NZ travels.

Response from Twinwaterslodge, Owner at Twin Waters Lodge
Responded 20 Feb 2016
I must respond to this review as it is inaccurate in many points and clearly reflects a bad attitude from this guest. First some facts: 1. The rooms are not small - they are 4.8 m by 4.8 m, with an ensuite and deck additional to that. 2. The rooms are only dark if you fail to raise the blinds. They have 3.6 m wide floor to ceiling glass windows and sliding doors! 3. The beds are absolutely standard twin beds (in the room that was booked) Our other beds are queen size, which may have been better for the guest, but twin beds is what he booked. 4. Deck chairs are provided for every room - he just had to ask, or look in the cupboard in his room. 5. There is no problem with mosquitos at Twin Waters - we do not have them here. There are sandflies, as at every beach location in NZ, but they are not particularly bad here (not like the West Coast). 6. The guest was charged $200 per night, not $250 as he claims (although he booked for 2 people, he was only one and was charged for only one. 7. Finally, he left without paying for the Farewell Spit Tour that he booked through us - with no apology from him!. As to the conversation he reports, I was not there and have no idea, but i do note that we have a strict no children policy and do not have the ability to take children, The guests in question had booked for 2 and arrived with an extra (a child) that we just could not accommodate. But this was none of the business of this reviewer who did not know all (or any) of the facts.

Trish and Mike Boland were the ultimate hosts! We loved our "Safari Room" and couldn't have been more comfortable in their beautiful B&B. The guests have their own living and lounge area beautifully decorated with African arts and crafts. Each guest room has it's own theme and are really well done, we were just partial to ours which was at the end. Breakfasts were delicious and the conversations with guests, Mike, and Trish were always fun and interesting. The location is perfect for exploring especially if you take the Farewell Spit Eco Tour, which we loved loved loved! Trish always lead us to the perfect adventure and restaurant, one of which is the School House. It was wonderful and just down the road five minutes away. We couldn't have felt more welcomed.

The lodge is in Golden Bay - a little outside of Collingwood (about 8km) - an ideal spot to explore Farewell Spit, Cape Farewell and Wharariki Beach - all on the northern most tip of the NZ South Island. The Rooms are all individually decorated and there is even a room that has disabled access. There is a guest lounge with loads of books to plan the next move and a TV (no tv in the rooms). The rooms are very spacious and I would say I had the best sleep there on our 3 weeks of travel until than. Just across the street is the Beach Front (through a little short cut) and it is perfect for long walks along and explore. When we where there they had a massive Spring Tide - so during high tide we could not get back to the lodge as the road was blocked by water - but hey - there are other things to explore. But the best thing about that place are the hosts - Trish and Mike - so helpful and well travelled themselves - we had a great time!! Highly recommend to stay there more than one night for sure!

My wife and I were traveling around New Zealand and booked a room at Twin Waters Lodge. The reason we've decided for their lodge was because their web site said "Twin Waters Lodge is a purpose built getaway for guests looking for a peaceful seaside retreat." Well this may be correct, but not in our case - we've got a special supprise where they've aparently decided that the best time for reconstruction of their lodge is the time when the guests arrive. So, we've received a good morning banging (both days of stay), despite our complaint that we're here to rest from our long trip. We were very dissapointed because we've deliberately chosen this lodge to have some peace, listen to birds and sleep until 10am. By our experience the lodge far is too expansive for the quality of customer service you get.
Well ok, we've liked the room (ocean blue) and of course the fact that Farewell Spit is just few minutes drive. But, that's about it.

Response from Twinwaterslodge, Owner at Twin Waters Lodge
Responded 7 Feb 2011
I am disappointed in this review. While it is true there was construction going on at the time, the builders (at our request) did not start work until 9.30 when the guests were already having breakfast (normally they would start at 7.30). The reviewer actually asked to stay for an extra day (and did so), which hardly fits with his other comments.

This is a sublime place to stay in Golden Bay. We pass through Takaka every year on our way to Awaroa Inlet but could find nowhere to stay in Takaka this year. Lucky us, as we instead found Twin Waters. Trish and Mike are great hosts, from the welcome to the welcoming drink - you feel invited into a family. The location is fantastic - Collingwood just to the south and Farewell Spit just to the north. You are basically in the very best part of the bay. Trish and Mike know it very well and can help with any advice about what to see. Best part of our stay was sharing the incredible breakfasts with the other guests - that is 2 other guests! Think small and very happy.
The room we had was great - spacious and private. Trish makes it clear you can interact or stay on your own as you see fit.
Also check out the School House Restaurant - minutes away for an excellent dinner - and the Court House restaurant in Collingwood for an excellent lunch.
If you are going to Golden Bay you should definitely think about Collingwood or north of there. That is where it turns into a unique place and Twin Waters is a perfect spot to access it from
Thanks Trish and Mike for a perfect start to our annual holiday. Awaroa treated us once again to a perfect two weeks but the stay at Twin Waters became a brilliant new start!

We enjoyed our visit at Twin Rivers Lodge. Trish makes a great breakfast and had fabulous recommendations for dinner spots. We highly recommend the lodge.
Golden Bay is an amAing spot with lots of birds and huge vistas. The NZ people are very friendly.
