    Hotel description
The Rutherford Backpackers is located at the mouth of the Pelorus Sound, in the South Island’s Marlborough Sounds. We are placed centrally in Havelock, just a stone’s throw away from cafes, restaurants, museums, shops, art galleries and the renowned Sandford’s Mussel factory established alongside our scenic Havelock marina. If you are out to experience and explore the adventurous outdoors Marlborough has to offer, Havelock provides the perfect playground. Whether you hike, bike, drive or prefer the water, Havelock is sure to fulfill any adventurers needs or desires. Once the old Havelock school. the Rutherford has been converted into a modern backpacker style accommodation and shares a name with the school’s most famous pupil, Baron Ernest Rutherford of Nelson, creator of modern atomic physics. Another famous student from the Havelock school was William Pickering, father of the NASA space program.
