Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place was great. The owner was super nice and helpful with tips. He knows the area really well. He speaks Spanish, English, German, and I think French. The place is fairly new, very clean, and well kept up. We liked the open space around the cabañas and the Alpacas. The younger one was super cute. And careful, the older white one spit on us, but I just spit back. : P The breakfast was awesome. The best we've had in our more than two months of traveling in South America. This place was a great value and I would definitely go back.

This place was great - a small walk from putre itself but lovely and quiet with gorgeous views. The rooms are actually individual cabins with bathrooms - bright, spacious and really clean. Very comfy bed, small heater to keep the room warm. Not the most powerful shower but hot water (which can run out if you shower too long but reheats after a bit). Breakfast was really good, especially compared to others we have received in Chile. Really can't think of anything negative to say!

This little hotel offers clean and spacious bungalows with also spacious bathrooms and working hot showers. There is even a radiator (really necessary - at an alttude of 3,500 m, it can get quite cold at night). Each bungalow has a little bench outside under a roof, which is quite comfortable if you are a smoker. ;)

The hotel is a bit away from the center of Putre (about 750 m), so it is wonderful quiet. The view is simply beautiful, you feel all alone in the Chilean Highland.

Breakfast is okay, very familiar feeling, all the guests sit at one really big table. There is even WIFI in that room (and outside the bungalow, too - it does not work well inside).

When we we were there, the surroundings were being transformed, so do not look for a beautiful garden or anything like that. But who needs a garden with that wonderful view?

I cannot compare with other lodgings in Putre, but this little hotel seemed like an oasis of peacefulness to me.

I cannot understand the bad reviews by some other travellers - of course, if you are looking to spend the nights in the village, this is not the right place. But if you arrive after a long day of travelling, you will be happy to get a good bed (mattresses were comfy) and to enjoy the calm surroundings.

I had one night here after having stayed two at Terrace Lodge. You don't expect five star comfort in a small town in the Andes and the cabins were basic. They were however clean and spacious. the shower was adequate at best. The main reason for such a low rating is the attitude of the man running the place. He couldn't have been more miserable if he'd tried. And the breakfast was also poor; you could have used the stale bread as a weapon - it was so hard. I have no idea how so many reviews talk about the friendliness and the good breakfast. In over three weeks throughout Chile, this was the worst host and the worst breakfast. Maybe the regular people were away. You'd also want a vehicle staying here as the walk to town isn't great if doing it at night. Although the accommodation may have been a bit smaller at Terrace Lodge, the welcome and the breakfast were on a different level to this place.

A number of cabañas (cabins) located on a field on the edge of Putre - actually a bit out of town. Only one bus company will get you to the centre of Putre - it's La Paloma from Arica. All other busses will stop on the Arica-La Paz road 4½ km from Putre and the La Chakana cabins are a further 2 km way. La Chakana does not offer pick up, and there are no taxis in Putre. In other words - it's best to have your own car if going here.

The cabins are large, they are very clean and with good beds - but it gets very cold at night and the limited heating and the blankets will not keep you warm at night. So expect a very cold experience.

Adequate breakfast.

Very weak WiFi in the cabins - but you can sit in the comedor and use WiFi here.

No English spoken. Owner helpfull finding a tour operator for a tour to the Parque Nacional Lauca (recommended). Note that you usually need to be a group of at least 3-4 persons if you want to go on a tour. Solo travellers usually cannot join an existing tour.

One day I found the door to my cabin unlocked after it had been cleaned. Nothing was missing from the room though.

The owner tried to overcharge me by some 20 percent when I left. So beware!

We decided to stay in Putre for 2 nights to acclimatize before heading out on some exciting tours. I cannot recommend a stay at this place and will present the reasons below. I would suggest that you only consider staying here if you have no other choice. On the positive side, the place is dead silent at night!

The first challenge I had was to make the reservation - on the hotel´s website, a bungalow was offered for US$64 (including the 19% IVA which foreigners don`t have to pay). However, they require a 50% deposit to secure the booking, and if you want to use your credit card, they charge you 4% extra! Sadly, the same accommodation was offered on booking.com for about US$72, but in this instance you could at least secure the booking with your credit card! Eventually we managed to make a 50% deposit, and when I had to settle the final bill, I was told most kindly by host Pedro that the rate excludes the 19% IVA (contrary to what was advertised on their website). I didn´t argue, I just was too happy to leave!

For starters, the place is located about a 15 minute walk from the plaza - take care at night and note that the walk into town is uphill and at altitude - quite strenuous!

The cabins are decent but the bathrooms not great. We did not have warm water in the shower and when we asked about it, we were given some urban legend as to why there is only warm water in the afternoon - in our case however, they were too lazy to investigate and realize that the gas had run out! This was not the only stinginess we experienced - they were scant with the shower gel and we had to ask for more! Although we slept warmly, the beds are uncomfortable and the mattress needs replacement!

Another sad affair was breakfast - a very poor offering not worth its while, in stark contrast to what other reviewers on trip advisor had commented. The first day they had run out of ham, so there was only some cheese, bread, cereal and one yogurt per person. Take your own coffee as they offer the cheapest available! Plan for additional food or snacks if breakfast is an important meal - don´t count on what they offer!

I was extremely disappointed and dissatisfied with Chakana and would not recommend a stay here! In addition, Pedro´s attitude did not add to making this an enjoyable experience.

We stayed for five days while exploring the Altiplano and Lauca National Park. The place was clean, quiet, and handy. We cooked all our meals in the commons kitchen. The property is great for birding and relaxing while you acclimate to the high altitudes.

Service - George and Marisol are two of the most helpful, friendly and welcoming people you will ever meet. They are involved in many aspects in the community while managing the hotel. No task is too big. They helped us organise our hotel in Arica, our taxi to Tacna, did all our laundry, suggested good restaurants, drove us to one of the sites nearby, and helped us plan most aspects of our stay in the Lauca area. Parque Nacional Lauca is tremendous in its own right.

Chalets - These are tastefully decorated in the Andean style, with lots of windows to see the view in all directions, the beds were comfortable, the rooms spacious, with an additional table and chairs, a small patio, and the bathroom was also spacious. Everything was spotlessly clean. One day the hot water did not work, which was due to the gas for the boiler being empty, which George immediately replaced. Thus I showered cold, but my wife had a warm shower ;-) The view form the hotel is splendid, down into the Putre valley, surrounded by mountains, and a 10-15 minute walk from town, depending on how well adapted you are to the high altitude. The location is better than the places in town, as in town the roads are quite narrow, and there are no green spaces to enjoy the gorgeous setting. For this the Chakana Lodge was quite unique.

Breakfast - It is quite simply the best you will find in South America, in terms of service, variety, quantity... One day scrambled eggs, one day fried eggs, then pancakes... absolutely wonderful for a good start to the day.

Stayed in the cheaper rooms in building containing main kitchen. Comfy, clean, large breakfast, warm heater, friendly family running the place.
We had our own transport, good secure parking for motorcycle.
A bit out of town but this was a plus for us.
Lovely views over valley.
