We stopped here overnight as it was the cheapest accommodation we could find. The rooms were nice and clean. We had a nice meal by the fire in the dining room. Staff were also very friendly and welcoming.

We stayed for a long weekend recently in Auburn walking distance to the Rising Sun Hotel. We did read previous reviews that where not very positive about the food but we thought we would give it a go. But despite the menu being very extensive and the hotel being very busy for a Saturday night our meals where very disappointing. I don't usually like to write poor reviews but we had eaten at the Watervale Hotel the previous night and really enjoyed there new Tapas menu it was a stark contrast to that meal. Our Thai fish cakes where soggy and lacked flavour and the lamb shanks where cold. Our table was in the hallway between the kitchen and dining room and was very dark and cold.

We chose the Rising Sun primarily as a base to cycle the Riesling Trail to Clare, and because of good reviews of new local restaurant Terroir. With an accommodation deal we chose to pay a higher rate for more room in the Executive Room. The positives - the room and linen were spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The downside - the larger room gave us a faded tapestry lounge which didn't face the TV, (perched on top of a mini fridge). The Executive Room faces the Main North Road with its steady stream of freight trucks and traffic. The 70s-style tarnished brass bathroom fittings, old bath and pine toilet need replacing. Breakfast provisions were tucked into the old wardrobe and we wondered where we would perch to eat breakfast if we hadn't been able to sit at an outdoor table facing the busy road. Auburn is a quiet and quaint town and an ideal base to explore the region.

Adelaide, Australia137 contributions8 helpful votesLast minute booking for 16 people for lunch was no trouble for the staff. We were located in a nice large dining room that was warm and inviting. Meals were great, reasonably priced and great local wine options. Well worth the visit and highly recommended.

Enjoyed the historical ambience and character of the hotel and our standard room within the hotel building (the lumpy mattress not so much). We ate at the restaurant and were impressed with the standard and the choices. The service was also great.
