What an amazing time we had at Rockwater......3 nights wasn’t enough!!!! The cave rooms were absolutely amazing and very comfortable. John and Silvana were the friendliest hosts that always made the time to check everything was ok and answer the many questions we had. The swimming pool was an added bonus and used several times a day, the snorkelling from Rockwater was an adventure in itself and the underwater scenery amazing.
This was one of our most memorable holidays and can’t wait to come back. Thank you John, Silvana and ALL of the wonderful staff that made this holiday one of the best

Thank you for your kind words, and as you say (echoing thousands of others) you need more than 3 nights on Tanna to enjoy and discover this extraordinary interesting island. I cry internally when guests tell me they are "...returning to Vanuatu" once they leave Tanna! The ones who have been here before come back for much longer the second time.

The bitter irony is that much of the national advertising imagery for Vanuatu is off Tanna, hence people think that all the iconic landmarks and experiences will be had in Port Vila as Tanna is rarely mentioned, hence they book week-long packages in Port Vila only to discover from their hotel Tour Desk that the majority of iconic things that attracted them to Vanuatu in the first place are actually not in Port Vila but on an island 120 kilometres south of Port Vila. After all, Port Vila (Efate Island) only represents 20% of Vanuatu, it is the small busy commercial capital. Locals call the rest: the real Vanuatu!

In the past it was difficult to find contemporary accommodation on Tanna, this is why after the devastating Cyclone Pam in 1015 we agreed it was time to build a better, stronger place to stay in Tanna ...the Rockwater project was born.

See you back home in Tanna!
John

John and Silvana have really built a labour of love here. The resort if very beautiful, comfortable and accommodating, despite the ongoing construction happening on one side (which does not detract from the experience at all I might add - no noise or dust at all). I would love to see how the finished product one day and the fully realised potential of the location and the eco-friendly building style. You could see similarities of technologies similar to Earthships. My room was essentially a coral cave (which is why I picked it - always wanted to stay in a cave). The restaurant was stylish and the food was top notch and fast too. Your hosts can also organise any and all of your local travels and have excellent knowledge of who is best to travel with and who to avoid. As a solo traveller who became injured during my travels (post volcano hiking - a must do however), the owners and all the staff very very wonderful in assisting in anyway they could to help, organising help, walking aids and massage treatments as needed. It is this personalised touch that for me makes the stay worthwhile when the unexpected happens. It is very quite and the gardens are also spectacular if you like that sort of thing. Very picturesque. There is a lovely pool on site and snorkelling on the coast although I was too injured to partake of these pleasures. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you for your observation and instructive comments SLM.

The objective of Rockwater is to imagine, and create a better world.

This takes time and patience, but in hospitality one should enjoyed the process more than the proceeds; the people more than the systems, otherwise the end product is soulless and has have failed in its objectives: making people happy and be successful.

Silvana, Margret, Nawiwa, Rose, and the 30+ staff you did not meet, hope you recover well and return to really enjoy the biotecture world we are creating.

John in the Vanuatu Earthship!

Only managed to stay on Tanna for one night but enjoyed my stay thoroughly. The bed was really comfortable, and loves the stone floor, it felt like your feet were getting massaged! Wifi was down, but i didnt mind, sometimes we need to switch off from the outter world. Menu chanhed everyday and it was delicious. Staff are awesome. I will be back and with some friends to stay longer. We got up the mountain, but unfortunately tried to book the blue cave too late, so we decided to utilise the pool, with some beers. Great resort and loved the focus on sustainability and the environment.

Hi Kaicritique,

Thank you for your review of Rockwater, and big apologizes for the lack of WIFI. Our communication provider was replacing towers on Tanna Island at the time (did not inform the local businesses of such!) which created a headache for our reservations and others dependent on coms.

We will get you to the Blue Cave next time. Good pics of it on Rockwater Facebook or our Tour or Image Gallery Page in our website.

Don't forget to book direct with us to ensure you do not miss out on anything...that goes for all future guests.

Cheers ...John

We opted to stay at the Rockwater Resort as part of an overnight volcano tour to Tanner Island organised by Air Taxi.

What an amazing resort, we came away wishing we had been able to stay much longer. Such a fascinating and inspiring place - so different from 'the norm'.

The resort is simply incredible - with rooms hewn out of the coral rock with lovely touches of exposed coral rock poking out in places from the smooth whitewashed walls. The owners, John and Silvana, were lovely hosts, with John giving us a personal tour of the resort before breakfast to show us how his vision in creating his resort was coming together.

The rock suites are very spacious and comfortable with views to the ocean over the amazing gardens which were covered in flowers during our brief stay. The pool and its waterfalls looks stunning - and will look even more amazing soon when John's vision of having the watercourse linking the pool complex running down through the resort dining area and into the gardens below is completed.

Our brief stay at Rockwater was a real highlight of our trip to Vanuatu, we are so glad we shad the opportunity to visit.

Ahhh Austbear ...you're giving away all the future surprises!
Just kidding, we will never stop improving, after all life is a permanent pursuit to do be better, by doing better.
Thanks for the humbling accolades!

The irony with developing the resort is that I receive enquiries from people that want to book but are cautious after reading of the "developments" at Rockwater on Tripadvisor ...I have to reassure that these developments are not noisy or disruptive to the resort daily experience, they just make the place better!

In meliora contende,
John

All the superlatives on their website and Facebook page are totally justified. From inspired vision, creativity and hard work, John and Silvana with their wonderful support team of builders and staff have created a truly unique resort. In early September we stayed a wonderful 4 days in a Rock Suite, and could have stayed forever. In all our world travels over many years no other place has wowed us like Rockwater Resort, and this was our seventh visit to Vanuatu.

The rock suites and resort rooms are very spacious and comfortable with views to the ocean over the colourful gardens; the beautiful swimming pool and cascades, the natural rock pools and coral gardens all have the wow factor.

John and Silvana genuinely care for their guests and staff, the island and its people and environment. They take pride in this unique resort they have created, and share their plans for stage 2 with great enthusiasm - their dedication to an eco philosophy is to be applauded.

Thank you for all your superlatives, we read and appreciate very much all the kind words written about Rockwater.

In the following weeks we start on the bird lake and drinking ponds...very exciting project as there is nowhere on this island for them to do this, consequently we can increase the bird population since it has been decimated from hunting and cyclones. The low tide reef in front of Rockwater has tripled the bird reef-feeders since we stopped all hunting on the reef 4 years ago, so it is the next logical step.

Our local hawk is keeping the Indian Myna at bay most of the time, hoping the water will help him stay and become a permanent deterrent. The owls will be happy and both will also hunt the bush rats, so win-win.

All the best Gumnut!
John
