We stayed at the bungalows for 3 nights. They are about a mile outside of town down a very rough road. We had a taxi take us there and then we rented bikes to get around during the rest of our stay. (There is a bike rental place very close to the bungalows near the laundry mat). The pool is nice and the breakfast was typical - fruit & eggs or pancakes and the room was clean. The reason I didn't rate it higher was because of the barking dogs that were next door. We did not get one night that we were not woken up several times. The restaurant here is not open but there are a few down the road or you could bike into town. I would probably stay closer to town the next time. Also make sure you give them your credit card when you arrive. I thought they had taken care of it with the reservation - they never asked for one. I told them we had to catch a 5:30 am shuttle the next morning and they said fine. Again never asking for the card. Then I receive an email saying I didn't pay! It was a hassle to have to deal with Western Union. I still don't understand why it wasn't handled at check-in.
This very small resort is located about a mile from Cahuita, on the Playa Negra. A part beach and part dirt road takes you to town. They have small number of bungalows placed in the gardens around a central reception, breakfast and pool area. I didn't see any sign of the restaurant ever opening, but plenty of food options along the road and in town. The bedroom was fine, well equiped for Costa Rica and clean. Breakfast was good and as usual in Costa Rica limited. Staff very nice indeed. Nice quiet place to stay.
My wife and I spent five nights here in early December just before the high season begins. We hadn't planned out the trip very well, but after arriving on the Caribbean coast at the end of a two-week Costa Rica trip we located this place while seeking out a room with air conditioning. After getting here, we looked around for other options to see if we were missing anything, and after travelling up and down the coast the next few days we decided we were in the best place. The food at the restaurant was very good, and the staff was wonderful. There are a number of cats that have the run of the place, one of which adopted us during our stay. The mattresses could be more comfortable, and I saw a cockroach once too. The showers have electric on-demand hot water heaters that didn't work very well. Not one of these issues would give me the least bit of pause on whether I would come back though. It was a great value, great ambiance, and we just felt welcome here.
We stayed here four nights in January 2013. This is one of the few lodgings in the area if Cahuita with Air Conditioning. This also one of the few places in the area if Cahuita with a pool. Both these things were very appreciated as this is the tropical jungle and it is hot and steamy year round.
The owners are Italian, from Bologna, and they were really wonderful as were all the staff. The Bungalows vary in size, and I think that some might have a separate bedroom and sitting area/kitchen. Ours was smaller, with one king mattress and two twins, but it was very comfortable as was the bathroom. The open air breakfast area in the center of the complex was charming and the breakfast was good.
The only negative I have is that the mattresses were not good. I spoke with the owner and she said that one of these was brand new and one was older and need to be replaced. I told her that even the new one wasn't all that great. Of course the owners don't actually ever sleep on the mattresses in their place so she was surprised to hear this and thanked me for letting her know. If it were not for this factor I would give it an excellent rating.
However I will say that I rarely found a decent mattress in most of Costa Rica, except for the two nights we spent in a $350 per night resort, so for the price of Bungalo Malu I would rather have air conditioning and a pool than a fantastic mattress and only a ceiling fan, know what I mean?
We were very impressed with Bungalows Malu. The people were great and very helpful. Loved the private deck off our little house even had a resident sloth for one day. I would like to suggest that they change out the mattress that we had in our room, as if seemed very worn, and add a couple more pillows. The deck chairs should be replace too but they were not a problem.
We hope to return to this place some day and take advantage of the great hospitality and that cool pool.
