Booked in castaways for four nights in june, ended up staying almost two months! Cannot credit the staff enough, Nicky, Adam and Dorothee were incredible. Always up for rallying everyone to do group things whether it was nights out, waterfalls or bungee jumping. Very clean and tidy. Nice little pool for the sunny days. It was a little bit out of the town centre but my legs needed the work out! Would stay here again in a heart beat. The Mexican night was an absolute highlight. Missing it here already!

After spending months traveling me and my girlfriend wanted to have a couple of relaxing days to re-energize before the next adventure (New Zealand). We found this place and the reviews said it was located far from party town and that they had good WiFi so we decided to stay here.

The staff seemed lovely and I have nothing but positive things to say about them but..

This ended up as the least relaxing place I stayed at during my east coast trip. There was a pool table just outside our room and that's where people hang out all day and often late into the night. Plenty of weed smoking, often throughout the day and night. They don't have a set quiet time so no wonder it's loud at night. The AC was coin operated ($1/3h) which was a first for me. Our had a jammed coin in it so it worked but I would definitely have changed hostel if that wasn't the case. The bed was almost like a sheet on springs and painful.

On the plus side there was a fridge in the room, plenty of hangers and a good WiFi when it worked - half the time it didn't so...

Pro tip: Say no to room nr 11.

I came by myself just for a three day reef trip, and the hostel felt like home by the time I left. It's small and a bit outside the city centre, so you can have a quiet, peaceful time if you prefer. And you don't get overwhelmed by obnoxious drunken teens like you might elsewhere. But there are also frequent nights out and fun activities on the balcony if you're looking to party. And there are no better people to do it with. The vibes are always chill and fun and friendly. The staff are the best. And they're also extremely knowledgeable and helpful when planning tours. The hostel itself isn't anything fancy. It's all pretty basic. Certainly worn but clean and unbeatable for the price. And the pool is really nice and the kitchen is quite large. Also there are free shuttles to the city centre, but it's walkable as well.

Been traveling around Australia for a while and this was by far the best hostel we have stayed in!! The staff were so friendly and couldn't do more to help, full of knowledge about the area etc. Melody on the tour desk was a legend pretty much booking our trip for us, didn't push the expensive ones like a lot of companies do, rather found tours that suites us best. All of her recommendations were amazing! The hostel itself had a relaxed and fun atmosphere with a lot of effort put in to make sure the guests have fun (pool tournaments, free slushies) and the staff get involved too. Any mess that is made is all down to other guests rather than staff negligence. It is a hostel after all! Really didn't want to leave this place! Thank you so much Castaways team!!!

I've stayed at nearly every hostel in Cairns and Castaways in by far the best.
Although it is a bit of a walk from the city centre (15-20 minutes) the staff offer a free shuttle bus the leaves frequently and sometimes by request. During the day the friendly staff often organise small trips to the beach or to local swimming holes which really allows us backpackers to see the local attractions that we normally wouldn't.
The hostel is clean and tidy but still has that homey feel to it. Dorms are 3, 4, 5 beds and no bunks! Reception also organises local tourist activities like reef tours, Daintree day tours, and more.
Guests are encouraged to socialise, and Castaways is one of the most social hostels in Cairns. There is no curfew at nights and everyone often gathers on the back deck for drinks and dinner. Those guests that like to get to bed early are respected and frivolities usually moved to the front by the pool after 10pm.
Kitchen facilities are great and there are free cooking utensils as well as cutlery.
Price includes free wi-fi and a fridge in your room.

Absolutely loved staying here and getting to know everyone. See you all again soon, I'm sure (:
