There is swimming pool, billard, hot nice and clean shower/toilet, kitchen inside and outside, places to chill out. We went there for 1 night and stayed 3 nights. There is no power for campervan otherwise we would love to stay more. This is the best place we stayed during our 1 month road trip.
I would like to point out how the owner, his son and his dog are really friendly and helpful! They are accessible and you can feel that they are not here only for the money. They really like what they do and try all the time to do their best. Really, we appreciated that because it’s not given to everybody to be like that. They can book for you an activity if you feel not comfortable with your English, you can borrow a bike for free which is really good because the city center is not too far.
If you are in van or car, it’s better to book before because there is only 5 places for and people like to stay more longer than expected :) It’s like a family place when you go there, other backpacks are friendly and there is no noise so you can sleep very good (different from other backpack places) 100% sure it’s the best place in cairns.
We would like to wish all the best for this place and for the owner. And if we go back to Australia, we will go there for sure!

After spending months traveling me and my girlfriend wanted to have a couple of relaxing days to re-energize before the next adventure (New Zealand). We found this place and the reviews said it was located far from party town and that they had good WiFi so we decided to stay here.
The staff seemed lovely and I have nothing but positive things to say about them but..
This ended up as the least relaxing place I stayed at during my east coast trip. There was a pool table just outside our room and that's where people hang out all day and often late into the night. Plenty of weed smoking, often throughout the day and night. They don't have a set quiet time so no wonder it's loud at night. The AC was coin operated ($1/3h) which was a first for me. Our had a jammed coin in it so it worked but I would definitely have changed hostel if that wasn't the case. The bed was almost like a sheet on springs and painful.
On the plus side there was a fridge in the room, plenty of hangers and a good WiFi when it worked - half the time it didn't so...
Pro tip: Say no to room nr 11.

My friend and I stayed for 4 nights, and every part of our stay was great. Everyone was super helpful. We were able to book our tours there, as well as arrange everything we needed, including airport transportation and transportation around the city. Wayne, Kieran, and Kenny did so much to help make our stay enjoyable and they also cared so much about us! They did their best to make us feel welcome on our first visit of Australia. We also enjoyed meeting the other staff members and talking to the other backpackers while listening to their stories and backgrounds. Castaways had an awesome atmosphere which made that sort of socializing possible. Games of pool and a bbq were organized to create a social space, though people were also free to sit and chat in one of the many social areas on any night of the week. The internet was the best of all the hostels at which my friend and I stayed in Australia. The bedrooms and bathrooms were nice, clean and spacious, as were the other spaces at the hostel. Our room had a fan, fridge, and aircon. The beds were also comfortable. I would highly recommend this hostel! Especially for younger people who enjoy meeting others!!

My girlfriend and I booked a double bed room for 5 days while we enjoyed the great barrier reef.
We booked at castaways because it was the cheapest hostel we could find.
Castaways is located very close to a few takeaway shops and a 24/7 supermarket which makes it super easy to finish preparing dinner if you forgot something.
They have free wifi which worked all the time for us, a free pool table that can be used all day until late, a TV room and a small pool if you're too lazy to go onto town and swim in the lagoon.
By far the best service they provided was a free ride into and out of town when you had to be at 7am on a boat. Knowing I didn't need to wait for a bus that might be late took a whole lot of stress away from this trip.
The staff was extremely friendly and were willing to put quite a bit of time and effort into showing us all the possibilities and helping us decide which to book based on their experiences.
The air con in the room is 1$/3h but is not needed most months of the year, and there is a ceiling fan which can operate all day and all night.
Overall we had a great time there for very cheap and got to meet many friendly people. Would highly recommend.

Castaways is a great hostel. Everything is cleaned to a high standard, the staff are fantasic and get you involved in things going on in the hostel or town. You get a free dinner voucher for the Woolshed. My boyfriend and I didn't eat the free dinner, you can upgrade your vouchers for $5, $7 & $9 and have other things on the menu, food was really nice. Kitchen at the hostel was good but they had hotplates which took forever to warm up!
The hostel is about 15 min walk from the town, but it's an easy walk. The hostel does do lifts/pick ups into town if you ask.
The pool At the hostel was nice and was actually regularly cleaned!
Overall a really nice and quiet hostel. Not one for the party animals at which suited us fine!
