I was here last week as part of a Viking Ocean Cruise Tour. I was very disappointed. The tour I paid for - " For lunch, travel to a local farm and dine among ancient olive groves and vineyards with spectacular views of San Gimignano. You can also visit the farm’s winery for a tasting." The owner met our group and shuffled us into the basement to see where wine is stored. It was very rushed as he stated he didn't have much time. Then we went upstairs for lunch. Now...he started talking in the front of the line. By the time the middle and end of the line got into the room...he was done talking and I didn't hear a word he said. I did see, what was to be our lunch however. Assorted cheeses and some olives, a few meets but the folks that sat at my table (inside the building) had no idea what they were because they didn't hear either. After dinner you could walk around the farm on your own...(and when I say farm...I mean the house/hotel/B&B type location. I was not "among the vineyards or the olive trees". All that being said...I may have simply expected more.
Loved our stay at Fattoria San Donato. We stayed in the upstairs apartment and had two bedrooms, a couch with cozy fireplace and simple yet well equipped kitchen and bathroom. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The porch was a favorite place to sit and enjoy the quiet days and evenings, with the occasional braying of the donkey breaking the solitude. The pool area is enjoyable, and we even played ping pong. Children and animals are welcome, adding to the family feel of the place. Our hosts were gracious and very accommodating, with our every need being met. We enjoyed every meal we had, with the fare being simple yet delicious. The wines they produce were very good and affordable. Overall, a wonderful experience in the Tuscan countryside in close proximity to San Gimignano. We look forward to returning to Fattoria San Donato.
This place is a hidden gem. It's not difficult to find off the main road and has brilliant views of rolling hillside and vineyards. The room was clean and decorated to a very high standard. Perfect for us as a couple. The owners speak very good English and are both lovely people. I highly recommend this place. Only downside is that it is a working winery so there was some noise in the mornings but totally understandable. Breakfast was great too and the owner has some very cute animals (Dogs, cats, donkey, goats)
A quick drive away from the walled city, this working vineyard and olive oil farm was a breath of fresh air after our travels through Rome and Florence. First the accommodations, the room was beautiful, it had a nice kitchen and dining area, comfortable bed and nice space outside to sit and relax with some wine. There is a beautiful swimming pool and lounge area as well.
Out host, Humberto was charming, informative and warm. He recommended several destinations for us to check out and was never too far away if we had a question.
The food was amazing. Book a reservation for dinner and you'll be amazed at the feast that Humberto and his family serve. Seriously, more food than you could imagine and each bite was beyond incredible. The wine flowed all evening and we went to bed with our bellies full.
I would definitely recommend this agroturismo to couples or anyone that wants to stay near San Gimignano but requires more of a country environment.
From the moment I spoke with our hostess on the telephone I knew we had found the right place. I called to enquire if we would be welcome with two cats for one night. Not everyone is keen on such travellers! She immediately suggested a room on an upper floor and you could tell she loved animals and would make us feel at home. So it was. Our room was large and furnished in good taste if rather spartan. There are fancier rooms with more modern bathrooms but this was perfect for our needs. Clean, warm and comfortable. The winery and small farm are in a charming medieoval hamlet. There is a nice garden with a pool exclusive to San Donato and several well maintained little buildings. The owners are lovely, friendly people with a talent for hospitality. We were offered a tasting of their very fineVernaccia, red as well as white, which is produced on site and got a chance to chat about wines and the surroundings. San Geminiano is five minute's drive away and we got an excellent restaurant reccommedation (Dorado').
Next day after a very good breakfast (served until after 11 so no need to hurry!) we were sorry to leave and felt we had made some new friends.
