Mixed stay - here on business for a night. Nice looking place to arrive at, and I think was previously connected to the adjacent church. Like a grand old country house. Things looking good.
Arrival - they really should sort out he underfloor and drainage in the walk from car park to the front door. There had been rain and I literally had to tiptoe through puddles - BIG puddles at that!
Room was in a more modern kind of annex to the main building as I booked a cheaper rate. I say 'modern' - very 1980s decor and desperately in need of an update. Room was on top floor in attic and rather pokey and unbearably warm - even in September - slept with window open as no air con. Musty damp smell too and an uncomfortably small bathroom
Wifi was useless in most places in the hotel and one bar unusable in the room. A problem also considering my phone is Vodafone and could only get 3G at best - not the hotels fault on the latter, but they really need to sort the former. Fine if you want a quiet break, but I was on business and needed to do work. That was impossible.
Despite dated room, I had one of the best nights sleep i've had in a hotel for some time! Great bed!
Restaurant in main hotel was overly pricey, but dined at the connected pub next door - which was very good.
Breakfast standard buffet fayre and not bad.
Not a howler of an experience, and comfortable enough for a good price, but don't think I would stay again.
Sets up to be a great place but then let’s itself down in simple areas. Travelled from Scotland and arrived early evening to find both restaurants fully booked. When I queried if we could eat, was told about the bar menu which is mostly sandwiches and bread is not an option for me. Asked to order a dish from the main menu but told that was not possible as the chef doesn’t do that! Room was in the newer portion of the hotel and spacious but quite cold with no heating at all in the bathroom meaning towels never really dried. Generally speaking some of the staff lacked any form of enthusiasm for their work, some however did all that could be needed sadly you remember the lacklustre ones.
Frankly this is a quite expensive hotel that doesn’t measure up to any expectation and inevitably dissapoints.
no WiFi in spite advertising high speed internet in every room manager quite dismissive about our complaint wont use hotel again ,although my wife enjoyed the spa, our bathroom ,room 18 smelled quite damp
Had a fabulous time here and can't wait to return. Food was delicous in the restaraunt. Cream tea yummy and spa facilities were well used by us.The grounds are lovely a d the room was more than we expected. Breakfast was a great.
Stayed whilst in the area on business trip. The building is amazing and the staff were very friendly.
The adjoining Fat Abbot gastro pub is good but stopped taking food orders on the one night at 8:30pm, which to be honest is a new one for me.
Breakfast was really good.
The room unfortunately was disgusting. Genuinely one of the worse I have stayed anywhere in recent times.
Room 10. Decor was dated, damp on the ceiling, shower did not work (very low water pressure) and I daren’t open the window as it was rotten and I mean rotten.
Some of the lights didn’t work, chunks and dents in the wall and on top of that the sink took an exceptional amount of time to drain.
I complained to reception, firstly asking if there was another room. Fully booked up. I was told someone would go up after I came down for dinner to look at the shower, sink and lights. That didn’t happen.
As my stay was for 2 nights I decided to look for another hotel for the second night, which unfortunately I couldn’t get one at short notice, so therefore spent the least time possible in the room for the remaining night.
To expect that the condition of the room is ok for paying customers to stay in is totally unacceptable. If my employer hadn’t paid for the room I certainly wouldn’t have paid. It’s really sad as I say the building and ground floor of the hotel are beautiful and given how busy the hotel is it’s inexcusable to have a room in this state, when only a bit of maintenance is required.
