This is my opinion on what to do in Key West if you only have a day or a week! We visit about 3 times a year, and as a couple with no kids this is our usual daily routine.

PensacolaBeach 's City Tips

  • Have fun and relax! Remember the people that live here have jobs to get to and things to do, so be careful and respectful of their paradise! Tip well everywhere you go and they will remember you! Listen to the locals when they tell you places to go and places to stay away from! Once again HAVE FUN !!
  • This is a great place to visit. Don't be in a hurry, if you have the time definitely take in all the sights. The cemetery is always a place to ride or walk through, very interesting history and some of the epitaphs are humorous. There are so many things to list that are free or have a small fee, and the history of the town is amazing. If you have a few days a snorkeling trip or fishing trip is a must. Fury is a great company to go out and snorkel with. For a sunset cruise I would suggest the Jolly Rover, a friendly crew that gives a little history while you sail out watching the sunset. Every time we visit we find something new to do or see. We never get bored or run out of things to do and we are there 7 days when we visit.
  • Bars> If you like to party Duval St is the place to be. More bars on one street than can be imagined. All have a different theme and style. We are not drinkers so I can't tell you which would be the best. I'm sure if this your thing then you will love doing the Duval crawl !
  • Dining.> There are alot of great places to eat, with a huge variety of styles and taste all over the island. Duval St definitely has the biggest variety in one location, but there are some really great local places tucked away on side streets, so don't miss out on some of the very good places that you might see while biking around. We have never been disappointed from these places either.
  • The best way to start the day is going to the White St pier to see the sunrise, it is the best place to see it rise over the water and is a starting point for the day by alot of locals.Stopping by Sandys before you get there, it is a small Cuban eatery located on White St that has the best coffee and breakfast. It can be busy, even early in the morning. It is located on the front of a laundromat with only a couple of chairs so it is definitely a take with kind of place. After you see the sunrise from the best location you can either go back to your room to get ready for the day or head over to Higgs beach which is only a couple of blocks south. The city comes early to clean up the seaweed that has washed ashore during the night and does a great job of keeping it clean. You could see some homeless people sleeping around the gazebo area but we have never had a problem with them bothering us. It is a small beach with a pier that has a couple of locations to walk down and get into the water. It is a great place to snorkel at the end to see a good variety of fish and occasionally even manatee! Once you have your spot picked out on the beach just relax a few hours and soak up some sun. Around lunch time you will want to head to Salute, a great Italian place right there on the beach! Grab a sandwich or any of their great dishes and enjoy the great view while you eat. After that, depending how long you have, you have a few choices. A.> Find a trolley location and buy the pass that includes the Aquarium and the Shipwreck museum. This also gives you a 2 day pass to ride the trolley. It makes about 4 stops that you can get off then get back on if you want to explore. The last pick up is about 4pm. This option will let you see most of the island and the chance to go to other things like Hemingway house etc. plus with the Aquarium and Shipwreck museum tickets will give you something to do if it happens to have a rain shower pass through. B> Ride your bicycle all over taking in the sights for yourself. You can ride all over and take your time to see what you want. C> Walk Duval St stopping in all the shops to pick up those much wanted souvenirs to take home for the family. Walk through the Butterfly house near southernmost point and make your way to Mallory Square. Mallory Square will be the best place to see the sunset with vendors and entertainers putting on a great show before the big finish of the sun slowly setting! Get there early to get a spot to sit as it can fill up fast!
  • The easiest way to get around is either on bike or on foot. We take our bikes, but the first time we rented from Eaton bikes and they made it very simple. They brought the bikes to us and picked them up when we were done. They were very fast and even offer road side assistance if needed for free. There are plenty of scooter rentals available also, but with the traffic it can be dangerous to ride, plus the parking is limited and most will charge you on the island, but plenty of places to lock up your bicycles and it is alot faster to pedal or walk.
