Conchin' Around Key West Town

96%
Found this guide helpful

Key West is a place that should be experienced in a long, slow sip, but many folks can only cram in a few hours while in port during a cruise stop. However you are able to experience it, you need to take advantage of every moment you have in this truly unique town...our American version of a Caribbean paradise. Okay, things to do... First: Take the Conch Tour Train and learn about the history, culture, architecture, customs, and quirkiness of the island also known as Cayo Hueso. It's an entertaining and informative 90-minute open-air trip around the majority of the town. Rent bikes or scooters to get around the island. There are many places to rent and you can find daily, weekly, or monthly rates to suit your budget. Sunset at Mallory Square. Street entertainers, musicians, and a big party at sunset. Also close by for sunsets is Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key resort. You can order drinks and watch the boats go by. Great place to people-watch before sunset! Take a sunset cruise on the schooner Jolly II Rover. They let you bring your own drinks and food on board and they'll ice it down and even serve it to you during the cruise. My wife and I got engaged on that ship and Capt. Rio took several photos of our happy day! The Hemingway House tour is pretty cool, and the guides do a great job of telling about the connection and influences between Key West and Papa Hemingway. You'll also get to see a bunch of descendants of the 6-toed cats the Hemingways had when they lived in Cuba. Mel Fisher's Maritime Museum at the corner of Greene and Whitehead St. is really interesting and displays a number of treasures recovered from the waters surrounding Key West. The Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House is another of our favorite historical spots For those needing sand between their toes, Fort Zachary Taylor has a nice beach and we biked over there quite a bit. The tour of the fort itself is great for the history buff in all of us. Smathers Beach is also scenic and a special place for us since that's where we were married! Food & Drink: Our favorite places for Happy Hour and good appetizer deals: Conch Republic Seafood Company. It's down in the Seaport/Marina area and they have some of the best Smoked Fish Dip anywhere! The Jolly II Rover is docked right there, also. Next door, try The Boathouse, below The Commodore. Great Happy Hour prices, half-price appetizers & drink deals. They don't have a website, but it's easy to find. Also in the same building, Alonzo's...good seafood place, especially if you like fried. Schooner Wharf is just around the corner from Conch Republic, across the harbor. Check out Michael McCloud from Noon to 5 Wednesday through Sunday. Funny, crusty, and occasionally crude, with great songs and stories. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, he's joined by two buddies, Capt. Carl Peachey on guitar, and Professor Pete Peterson on keyboards; they're great! If you're there the week of April 22nd, they'll have all sorts of fun activities for the Conch Republic Independence Celebration (look up that on Google...fun stuff from when they "seceded" from the U.S.) They have plenty of other good live music at night, too. Of course, Margaritaville! Hoist a 'rita to Jimmy Buffett and be the best Parrothead you can be! Take a ride over to Sunset Key to the Westin Resort and eat at Latitudes Restaurant. Call for reservations and take the shuttle boat (departs right by the cruise ship port) over to the resort (you don't have to be a resort guest). Beautiful place to sit outside and enjoy the view, not to mention some of the best food in the area. We love to eat either breakfast or lunch and then walk around and check out the "ritzy" homes on Sunset Key. The food is a bit pricy, but not outrageous for the experience. We've gone there on every trip and the food, service, and ambience is outstanding! Hog's Breath Saloon has decent pub grub food and fresh oysters along with good music. One of our newest favorites, Smokin' Tuna boasts a great menu and entertainment to match. Try the Tuna Chili...good stuff! (One of Paula Deen's favorite dishes). Another great Happy Hour spot and the only brewpub on the island, Kelly's Caribbean Bar and Grill, right down the street from the Coco Plum Inn. Excellent margaritas (try the Key Lime 'rita made with Keke Beach Key Lime Creme Liqueur). It's also a really great dinner spot with a beautiful tropical garden setting. Blue Heaven. Like a lot of places in KW, it may not look like much from the outside, but great food inside. We've had lunch there, but really love breakfast. It's a little pricy, and be forewarned...if they tell you about any "off-menu specials", ask how much they are. I got dinged for some very tasty, but very expensive Lobster Eggs Benedict once... Once. Not far from Blue Heaven, check out Santiago's Bodega. Excellent for tapas and happy hour goodies, along with a very nice dinner menu. Louie's Backyard is on the Atlantic side and is a great place to just hang out and drink Bloody Marys at the waterside bar. Indoor dining is available; food is outstanding, too. Paseo has some of the best Caribbean-style food anywhere! Try the roasted corn and don't mind the chickens that will visit you while you eat at one of the outside tables. Pepe's Cafe is also funky good and one of the oldest places on the island. Best Key Lime Pie! Willie T's is fun, has live music, and pretty good late-night chow. Island Dogs is a neat place to eat, drink, and people watch. The Rum Barrel is one of our favorite stops for refreshing rum drinks and decent food. We've run into some interesting folks there over the years... Sloppy Joe's is a very popular place and is at the hub of activity on Duval Street. You can wave at us from the web cam on the sidewalk! Maybe my next-to-favorite pure bar on the island is Captain Tony's, which was the original Sloppy Joe's back in the 30s. Fun times and good drinks http://www.capttonyssaloon.com World of Beers. Says it all...on Greene Street. Huge selection of beers. I mean it. Irish Kevin's is always hoppin' with live music and good beer selection. Great place to duck in out of the heat while strolling Duval. Down in the Key West Bight area, there's the Half Shell Raw Bar and Dante's. Dante's has a huge pool, so wear your swim suit, order a drink and dive in! In the same area, Turtle Kraal's has been around for a long time, and we really enjoyed our ceviche there. Another must-do...The oldest bar on the island, The Green Parrot Bar, circa 1890. Right across the street from the courthouse...which also opened in 1890. Coincidence? Love this place for drinks and music. You'll have to walk down the street and have your picture taken by the Mile Zero sign on US 1! For Cuban cuisine, which we now love after many trips here, try these two spots: El Meson de Pepe is right by Mallory Square, so it's convenient to the sunset celebrations. Great food and fun Latin-style live music outside. El Siboney is off the beaten trail, but worth the trip if you rent bikes or scooters. One of our favorite lunch spots! If you have small kids, there's not a lot for them to enjoy other than the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and that doesn't take too long to wander through. There are many other places to numerous to mention in this space, but this is a snapshot of our favorite spots to hit up when we're in town. We usually stay for the month of July when it's nice and hot...and humid. Staying hydrated is key in Key West, and there are many places to do just that! Enjoy your visit to our favorite place on the planet!

HornJock's City Tips

  • Just about every restaurant has their version of Conch Fritters and Smoked Fish Dip. Don't be afraid. Try 'em all!
  • Tip your servers and bartenders well for good service! Lots of really good folks trying to make a living here...
  • If you're here on foot or on bikes, watch out for all forms of motorized transportation. Drivers are not the most attentive and bicyclists do not always follow the laws of the road. Folks on scooters are extremely aggressive and should be regarded as hazards to human health...

If time permits, take a day and head out to the Dry Tortugas National Park and explore Fort Jefferson, either with a guided tour group or through the self-tour that's provided. We took the ferry boat and thoroughly enjoyed the trip out to the park and the snorkling that is available around the perimeter of the fort. Colorful fish and sealife abound!
