Zoe S's City Tips

  • Don't worry if you can't find the tour you're looking for – it's actually quite affordable to hire a private guide and driver for a day.
  • Haggling is commonplace in Antalya, but don't start bargaining unless you are interested in making a purchase and don't attempt to haggle on bus tickets, food or entrance fees.
  • Turkey is a Muslim country, so dress respectfully, especially when going off the beaten track – keep shoulders and legs covered, and for women, carry a scarf to cover your hair.

My top choice for a day hike from Antalya is Termessos, an ancient Pisidian city perched on a hilltop more than 1,000m above sea level. It's a steep but manageable hike to the top, where you'll be rewarded with impressive views over the hilltop amphitheater, but take time to explore the many other ruins along the way too.

    • History Buff
    • Hidden Gems
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • Steep sections mean that this might not be the best choice for young children – although they can still explore the lower ruins.
    • Take a guide or a detailed guidebook to make sure you don't miss anything – the trails aren't that well marked, but as it's all uphill, it's hard to get lost.
    • Wear good shoes and take plenty of water for the hike.

This dramatic tree-lined gorge is the centerpiece of the Köprülü Canyon National Park and the top activity here is white water rafting. The gentle rapids offer plenty of fun for first-time rafters, but it can get busy during the summer months, so if you want to escape the crowds, hire a car and seek out a secluded spot to swim or hike.

    Good for
    • Peace and Quiet Seeker
    • Thrill Seeker
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • If you don't want to get wet, you can still watch the rafters – the bridges over the river offer excellent views.

Unless you have a particular interest in archeology, the ancient city of Selge is probably not at the top of your itinerary, but the little visited site is a worthwhile alternative to the tourist honeypots of Perge and Aspendos. The ruins are scattered around a 900-meter hill and while the standout attraction is the 10,000-seat hilltop amphitheater, the real highlight is the journey, a winding drive full of startling panoramic views.

A fun way to journey around Turkey's top attractions without leaving Antalya, the MiniCity exhibition features dozens of the country's most famous mosques, monuments and historic sites recreated in miniature. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Istanbul's Hagia Sophia, Pamukkale, the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne and Aspendos theater are among the many highlights.

Antalya's bazaar is everything you'd expect from a traditional Turkish bazaar – a riot of color, crammed with everything from cheap clothing and fake designer goods, to quality handicrafts and carpet stalls. Best of all is the food – lokum (Turkish Delight) in a myriad of flavors; heaps of dried fruits, nuts and spices; and freshly baked pastries and baklava.
