Shopping Guide for Siem Reap

Siem Reap isn’t a mecca for shopping, but look a little closer and you can still have a ball and find some really unique items! The popular markets are good fun for souvenirs and cheap t-shirts, tank tops, and other practical clothing; while one-of-a-kind artisinal designs can be found in various specialty boutiques; and there's even a farmer's market for those who like to go organic. Though you won’t find any high-end retailers in Siem Reap, you will find several lovely local stores like Graines de Cambodge, who make jewelry from seeds, and a few places where you can what artists at work.

Sarah R's City Tips

  • There is a huge variety of places to eat in Siem Reap and most are pretty good. The prices vary a little, but you get what you pay for.
  • Siem Reap is a very easy city to get around; hire a bicycle, take a moto or tuk tuk, or go on foot - distance-wise it is a walkable place, but there aren't a lot of footpaths which can make walking difficult.
  • Dress conservatively; cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you are going to temples.
  • Be open and friendly and smile a lot, as well as feeling good, it's well-received by locals.
  • Carry toilet paper as many public facilities, including those at popular tourist sites and some restaurants, won't provide it.
  • Tipping isn't expected but is greatly appreciated because the staff earn low wages.

One of the most popular markets and conveniently located in the center of the city's action, near Pub Street. The market is great entertainment if you want to pass some time. It’s separated into different areas; jewelry, clothing, scarves (krama), souvenirs, household items, and hardware items. The main building is on one large block, but stalls are gradually spreading into to the neighboring block to the south.

There are two sections to the Night Market; one to the east of Pub Street over the river, near the Angkor Arts Center, and the other to the west, just beyond Sivatha Boulevard. Both are great for treasure hunting, and don’t be put off by the enthusiastic vendors — there is so much interesting stuff to look through here! You can also buy clothing, souvenirs, paintings, candles, incense — a myriad of treasures! In the section to the west (between Sivatha Boulevard and Bugs Street) you’ll also find some cool bars like Island Bar and Brick House, along with a street lined with massage places to give your feet a treat! Pick a plastic chair to stop and sit for some food on the corner, where you’ll see quite a crowd, or try something from one of the many carts nearby.

The inside of this mall is not how you might expect it to, with just a handful of specialty stores and a large supermarket inside. Highlights of the specialty stores include a natural bamboo clothing store, import clothing store, natural beauty products from Bodia Spa (one of the best in Siem Reap), and a bookstore at the top of the building. The supermarket is large and well-stocked.

This market, held every weekend at Shinta Mani Hotel, is a culmination of some of the best locally made products. See and buy a selection of wonderful items; regular stall wares include art, clothing, accessories from recycled items, local jewelry designs, flavor-infused rum, and local sweets and treats. Each evening at approximately 7pm there is a cultural Apsara performance, and sometimes a special appearance by some of the local circus performers from Phare Cambodian Circus. Grab a seat, a glass of wine from one of two wine shops, something to eat, and enjoy the show!

Samatoa use eco-friendly, locally-made, natural silk, for their beautiful garments. Choose something off the shelf or have something custom made by their talented tailors. They have a lovely little showroom opposite the popular Peace Café, just off River road on street 27 — it’s worth a visit!

A local success story, Som — the owner and creator of jewelry, homeware and clothing masterpieces created from seeds — worked hard to build her business from just pile of seeds on the side of the road. Now, she is able to employ local staff and teach them how to make jewelry too. There's a beautiful showroom and shop in Alley West near Blush Boutique. It’s a struggle not to want to buy the entire shop!

This workshop and showroom should definitely be on your list of places to visit while in Siem Reap. This is more than just shopping: It’s a visual insight into how local handmade items are made, as most of the items in the store can be seen being created in nearby workshops. These include silk fabric items, statues, and lacquer work, and it is fascinating to watch them being worked on.

A short bicycle ride or tuk tuk trip will get you to Psar Leu on Road 6. Anytime you ask someone where you can get something, the answer will more often than not be Psar Leu. This huge market can be seen from the road due to the umbrellas and tarps that expand out of the main building. This is where the locals shop and where you’ll get a better price for most items. There’s an abundance of fresh food and stalls to eat at, shiny new sandals (think sparkly!) for both men and women, and anything else you can imagine; cooking utensils, clothing, hats, food, and household goods. Or perhaps you want to get your hair done and then find some nice bling to decorate it with?

This market began in late 2014 and is gradually getting bigger. Sunday mornings the popular bar 'Asana Old Wooden House,' transforms into a small market for local farmers and artisans. This is a specialty market where local companies sell their quality goods; from home made bread, fresh eggs, herbs, and vegetables, to hand woven baskets, French cakes from the local NGO patisserie training school, and spreads and chutneys made from local produce. This is great for visitors wanting to assemble a gourmet picnic for the day, or for visitors staying longer and wanting some delicious items for the pantry.
