3 Days in Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is one of the most laid-back places in the whole of Southeast Asia. The town has such a wonderful feeling and I always feel so relaxed and welcomed every time I visit. There are many things that you can fit into three days, and this list just scratches the surface. My main piece of advice? Lose your map, wander around the back streets of the old town, and see what else you can discover.

PeterJones79's City Tips

  • Be careful if you go antique shopping, some items are copies. Shop around, ask questions, and make sure that you're getting what you pay for.
  • Start early, finish early — like many Asian towns, Luang Prabang has more going on in the morning than the evening. Make sure you sit down to your evening meal no later than 8pm.
  • For getting around, the best way is either on two feet or two wheels. The pace of life is slow so why speed it up?
  • Laos tuk-tuks are not my favorite and are quite clumsy.
  • Respect the resident monks and ask first if you wish to take photos (just like you would like to be asked if someone was to take a photo of you).
  • The Lao word for hello is "Sa Bai Dee." Try it!
  • Do take off your shoes before entering a Laos home.
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples, and women should remember not to touch a monk or a monk’s robes.
  • Picking up rubbish sets a good example for young Laos people.
  • Don’t give gifts to children as it encourages begging. Give to a village elder instead.
  • Touching or showing affection in public will embarrass your hosts.

More than simply a place to sleep, Kamu Lodge is an all-round experience, and the perfect rustic retreat in which to immerse yourself into the local way of life, away from all modern distractions. Despite its remote setting, the lodge and its tent cabins are surprisingly comfortable, and after a day’s activities you can reward yourself with a massage overlooking the Mekong.

This is a daily event for the early risers in your group, and a lovely sight to behold. However please respect this ceremony as the sacred event that it is (rather than a great photo opportunity), and avoid participating unless you are a practicing Buddhist.

This zip-lining adventure is good fun for all of the family; the equipment is good quality and your safety is looked after by two guides at all times. However bear in mind that once you start, you have to finish all the stages, so be prepared to spend at least a few hours here.

Situated up the Mekong in Ban Pak-Ou, these caves — littered with thousands of small statues of Buddha — make for a fascinating stop-off. There are two sets of caves; the lower one you can see on your approach, while the higher one lies at the top of a steep staircase climb.

Just a short boat trip up the Mekong, you can learn all about how the locals distill and make their own whisky here. For a non whisky lover the taste is not as strong as expected, plus there're two strengths to choose from, meaning everyone should try at least a little. This is usually your first river landing on a normal day tour from the city, so perfect for a breakfast aperitif!

This is the perfect and most stunning place to cool off during the hotter months. The waterfalls are really spectacular with beautiful clear pools to swim in. There is also a restaurant nearby so no need to bring anything with you. Plus, on your way there or back, you can stop off at the nearby 'Free the Bear' center, which cares for 23 Asiatic Black Bears and does a fabulous job of it.

This market is not to be missed — and literally can’t be missed as it takes over the main street from 5pm each night! Here you'll find some really lovely handicrafts, rice paper prints, T-shirts galore, plus beautiful slippers — what more could you ask for? Apart from the covered walkways not being ideal for those over 6ft tall, the market is made even more enjoyable by the fact that you can look and touch without being pounced on by the market vendors and hounded to buy something.

There are too many agencies offering elephant safaris in Luang Prabang to mention them all, but I can say that there are few better places in Asia to try your hand at riding an elephant than here at Elephant Village. I'm always impressed by the high quality of animal welfare whenever I visit.

Perfect for all age groups and interests — from the general tourist to those out there who love their crafts — this center was founded by a local weaver and British photographer, hence the name, which means East meets West. Here, you can either watch or take part in a weaving class to see firsthand just how much time and skill goes into producing their wonderful textiles.
