Best Food in Luang Prabang

Exclusively commissioned by TripAdvisor

Found this guide helpful

The food scene in Luang Prabang is always evolving, from its readily-available international cuisine to its traditional Lao cooking, which is still what attracts me to eating out in this UNESCO World Heritage city. I could recommend practically every restaurant for one reason or another — as they all offer a combination of good food, great views, and terrific ambiance. My selections below are stand-outs for offering the best of the best, with a well-curated menu that aspires to authenticity while reaching for wide appeal. I've also tried to include a few truly local places, where folks gather to eat and drink with friends and family. So, when in Luang Prabang, do as the locals do: Eat, drink and be merry!

  • Not all restaurants take credit cards. Make sure you have enough Kip or USD with you before heading out for dinner.
  • Tips are not expected, but very much appreciated. Some of the better restaurants will include a service charge on the bill.
  • A note about service: be patient, many Lao people are still learning western-style service!
  • Wine, spirits, and beer are served at most places. Unless it's a high-end establishment, be wary of ordering wine.
  • Many restaurants have outdoor seating but if you choose to sit outdoors, bring some bug spray! You many not need it, but it is good to have with you.
  • Eating out is a casual affair in Luang Prabang. No need to get overly dressed up.

Good food for a good cause. Khaipaen is part of Friends International's Tree Alliance restaurants, where marginalized youths get on-the-job training. Featuring fusion dishes, the menu is well-rounded with local specialties and western fare, all with an innovative twist. The namesake Khaipaen — Lao river weed served with jeow/spicy sauce — is fantastic, as are the fresh spring rolls. The food, the setting, the decor — it's all so professionally executed that you almost forget that Khaiphaen is a teaching restaurant!

    Tips
    • As a training restaurant, the service can be halting. The kids are learning and shy, but a teacher is always next to them ready to chime in with information should you need it.
    • During high season, it can get busy, and reservations are recommended.
    • One corner of the dining room is dedicated to Friends N' Stuff, a little shop that sells handicrafts made by youths and their families.

Located at Ock Pop Tok's Living Crafts Center, about 5km south of Old Town, Silk Road Cafe is worth the trek. The menu features traditional Lao specialties alongside dishes inspired by the cuisine of cultures along the ancient Silk Road. The fish laap is particularly good! The tabouleh is exceptional, and the salads are crisp and generously portioned. Aside from the fresh and mostly organic ingredients, what sets Silk Road Cafe apart is its location. Perched along the eastern bank of the Mekong River, the cafe offers uninterrupted views of the languid river and the forested hills. It is quiet, serene, and idyllic.

Le Banneton wins for best bakery and cafe in town. It exudes old world charm, from the French colonial decor to an unbeatable view of Wat Sop Sickaram across the street. In addition to freshly-baked baguettes, croissants, and pastries, the menu features a full breakfast and lunch menu. The pesto mozzarella sandwich is one of my favorites, and you will be hard-pressed to eat just one of any of the pastries you choose. The coffees are also very well prepared, and delicious hot or iced.

    Tamarind

    rachna438 Says:

Started by a Lao-Australian couple, Tamarind delivers authentic Lao cuisine. Lao cuisine is characterized by its use of highly aromatic and pungent herbs, and a good cook is one who can strike a balance between all the elements. The Lao culinary landscape also consists of a range of ethnic specialties, and to this day, many communities forage by river banks and in forests for herbs and greens. The breadth of Lao cuisine, with all its intricacies, are artfully (and deliciously!) executed at Tamarind. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and will inform you about ingredients and cooking methods employed in any dish you order. The menu is definitely an ode to Lao's love of meat, especially homemade pork sausage. That said, the chef pays particular attention to the vegetarian options on the menu — the tofu laab and the steamed herbs are unworldly and unforgettable. There is nothing on the menu that I wouldn't recommend! I've gone for full on dinners, and for drinks and a sample appetizer platter — each time, I left happy and satiated.

    Secret Pizza
    Restaurants (Italian, Pizza, European)
    rachna438 Says:

It takes some footwork and commitment to find Secret Pizza, but you will not regret the effort. Located down a dirt road in one of Luang Prabang's residential neighborhoods, Secret Pizza is an homage to pizza, Milanese style. A few years ago, owners Andrea and Lee eked out a casual dining space in their garden and built their own brick oven to fire up homemade pizzas. They started out hosting alfresco dinners for friends, but word soon spread about the best pizza in town! A self-serve salad station features organic greens and tomatoes from their garden and olive oil, balsamic vinegar, coarse salt, and freshly ground pepper are provided to dress your salad. The pizza menu consists of both basic and imported ingredients — but honestly, there is nothing 'basic' here. Pizzas are made to order, and Andrea mans the oven, making sure each pie is cooked to perfection. Yellow bamboo, champa trees, palm, and coconut trees are strung with fairy lights, and seating is fashioned from reclaimed and recycled wood. You can tuck yourself away in a quiet nook or even a treehouse to share an intimate conversation, or get in the mix with a lively group of locals and expats.

The product of another Lao-expat partnership — this time Lao-French — Blue Lagoon is a great place to treat yourself! Tucked down a side alley, not far from the night market, the restaurant is an oasis of calm. The menu features both European and Lao dishes, and the chef gets high marks for getting it right all around. The desserts — particularly the ice cream — are arguably the best in town. Though considered a little pricey compared to other restaurants in Luang Prabang, Blue Lagoon is well worth it by all counts: excellent food, great service, and a beautiful setting.

This Lao-style home, on a quaint side street by the Mekong, is now one of Luang Prabang's most cherished restaurants. The owner/chef Joy personally cooks each meal from a menu that includes Lao, Thai, and western favorites. I would stick with the Lao dishes! The 'khaipaen' (fried river weed) here is one of the best, the whole grilled fish with garlic is done to perfection, and the fresh bamboo salad is also terrific. Joy chooses all her ingredients carefully, going to the market each day to buy vegetables and meats. The restaurant really feels like you are dining in her home, and is a good antidote for the travel weary.

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Luang Prabang — even my five-year old daughter loves it! Located on the Nam Khan waterfront, the dining area is a wooden deck that looks directly out over the river. Lush trees and flowering plants provide shade and shelter, and you feel like you are in a private oasis even with restaurants immediately on either side. The food is 'fusion' in that they aim for broad appeal. The Lao specialties are very good, particularly the laap and 'mok pla' (fish and herbs steamed in banana leaf), and the western menu includes pasta, burgers, and french fries. (Aha! French Fries! That is why my five year old likes this place!) They also offer a full bar with reasonably priced drinks, cocktails, and fruit shakes.

Sin Dad means 'grilled meat' in Lao, and there are many such restaurants all over town. None, however, are as charming as Khem Khan Sin Dad. Located on the Nam Khan waterfront, the restaurant is small and always busy with locals. Each table has a built-in coal stove with a BBQ pot and when you sit down, the waiter fills the clay stove with hot coals and pours steaming broth into the sin dad pot. You order a selection of meats and/or fish and vegetables and start grilling and making your soup! It's lively and interactive and definitely not to be missed!
