Kirsty S's City Tips

  • Thais greet each other by pressing their palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a ‘wai‘. The younger person will ‘wai’ the older person first, who then returns it. Thais will greatly appreciate it if you adopt this part of their culture during your visit to Phuket.
  • Phuket’s beaches are beautiful but during the monsoon season (May to October) they experience extremely strong rip tides. Tourist deaths are not uncommon at this time so be careful, particularly with small children.
  • The feet are considered the lowliest part of the body by Thai people, so be careful not to point your feet towards religious shrines and symbols. In contrast, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body – be sure not to pat children on the head etc.

Both the kids and adults in your family will love the Phuket Trickeye Museum. It's filled with 3D images that require your interaction to create fun moments and the ultimate photo opportunities! This is as fun and interactive as museums get and is ideal for that rainy day, or perhaps to escape the heat.

One for the older kids and teenagers, Surf House at Kata Beach is a safe place to ride the waves, whatever the weather conditions. Try Surf House’s high-pressure wave-generating machine that shoots water up a slope for you to surf upon. If you and your family are new to surfing, don’t worry; beginner surfers hold onto a safety rope held by a member of staff, and if you slip or fall, the strong water flow will ensure you never completely fall down!

Phuket’s Splash Jungle Waterpark features everything from mellow splash pools for the little ones to exhilarating water rides like the Boomerango. There’s plenty for the adults to enjoy too, with a swim-up Splash Bar and even a Spa Village for a spot of pampering. Situated at the edge of the jungle overlooking Mai Khao Beach, Splash Jungle is also set against a beautiful backdrop.

For a family-friendly restaurant that doesn’t compromise on service and ambience, try Tatonka near Bang Tao Beach. The food and atmosphere are both great for the adults, while the children are well looked after with a fantastic children’s menu catering to even the fussiest of eaters.

While you’ll probably visit the main Kata Beach during your time in Phuket, if you want something with less of a party atmosphere and where you’re less likely to be hassled by vendors, gather the kids and take them to Kata Noi Beach. It’s quiet and safe, yet has all the amenities you could want or need for a great family day out at the beach.

    • Beach Goer

As clichéd as it sounds, FantaSea really is a great night out for the whole family. Elephants are such a significant part of Thailand, yet most people are reluctant to embark on elephant trekking tours due to fears that these magnificent creatures might be mistreated. Kok Chang Safari Elephant Trekking is an exception, where the elephants are refreshingly well-cared for and happy. It’s not exactly off-the-beaten-track stuff but the kids will love it and it’s an experience the whole family will remember in years to come.

    Kirsty S Says:

It’s dinosaur themed mini-golf! Navigate your way through swamps, lava caves, a waterfall and an erupting volcano – plus meet a dinosaur at every hole. The course itself is well-planned with lots of twists, turns and challenges to keep interest levels up. Popular with both kids and adults, it can become quite busy, but the atmosphere is always fun and friendly.

    Good for
    • Family
    • Thrill Seeker
    Tips
    • Due to Phuket’s heat and humidity, it’s best to visit the Dino Park after the sun has gone down. (The lighting, erupting volcano and fog are best appreciated after dark anyway!)
