Three days of being local on Oahu

Found this guide helpful

After a week or so of playing a good tourist; making sure you have done all obligatory whale watches, luaus, historical and museum sites and perhaps escaped burning yourself to a crisp (SPF50 highly recommended even for those that "just never burn, really"), my guide is for those that want to go "off the beaten path" and see a little more of the island than just the shopping mecca and overcrowded beaches of Waikiki.

ZeeGee808's City Tips

  • Relax and have fun...don't come out to work. There really is a thing called "Hawaiian Time"...hang loose, no worries and aloha are all things to remember and just BREATHE!
  • Don't drive during rush hour. We are often one of the top 3 in the country for traffic...so avoid it when you can! Our bus system is excellent, but time it away from rush hour!
  • Try different food! So many tourists come out and continue to go to chains...there are so many cultures and so much to try...do it!
  • If you are going to a secluded beach, hike or out of the city be sure to lock your car, not leave ANYTHING out etc. There are a lot of break-ins and tourists are often a target!
  • Dress appropriately and bring gear for ALL hikes no matter how short or easy they are...you DON'T want to get stuck out there without food, water or a way to contact rescue.
  • Make sure you wear comfortable shoes for a day of exploring...don't wear your flip flops like the locals unless you are used to it!

    ZeeGee808 Says:

OK! So, day one has some "and/OR" options in there. Start off on the East side of the island and do a nice hike to get that blood pumping. Kuli'ou'ou Ridge, Koko Crater and Makapu'u lighthouse (or the tide pools, which is actually just below the lighthouse trail and where I would suggest going if you want to have a more in-depth hike and experience) are all very different hikes that offer something spectacular. The ridge is a little more covered and back into the mountain. Koko Head is ALL stairs and more difficult if you aren't a hiker, but with a great view at the top. Makapu'u lighthouse is paved and very easy for families, larger groups and strollers, with a great view at the top and a couple alternatives paths toward the top. The tide pools have a couple ways down the face of the "cliffs" and have wildlife available to see (sea creatures in the pools!). I would say in order of difficulty (from easy to difficult): Makapu'u lighthouse, Kuli'ou'ou, Makapu'u tide pools and then Koko Crater. (Though you can make most a bit more difficult depending on what level hiker you are. Please remember to be careful!! Always get your footing before "selfies" and pics, watch your surroundings, be prepared and DON'T blog or text on your hike...we have numerous tourist hikers die each year doing DUMB things and not respecting where they are. It is precarious enough as it is.)

    Tips
    • Go EARLY to your hikes to avoid crowds AND getting burnt/exhausted by the sun. It gets HOT!
    • Wear sunscreen, appropriate hiking gear and bring water and snacks!
    • Make sure to lock your vehicles and leave NOTHING of importance in sight...there ARE many break-ins at these sites, especially if you get a "tourist vehicle" like a convertible!

Please see my description of the ridge. I don't imagine many will do multiple hikes in a day, but if you are a nature lover and an experienced hiker, you may be able to a couple of these choices! I would recommend doing Koko or Makapu'u first, then move to the Ridge if you are going to do that...as it gets pretty warm close to the water the later in the day it gets!

Since you are already on the East of the island, it is just a hop, skip and a jump over to the Windward side where you can experience some of the beauty of a rainier area AND fill up after those hikes! The Shack is a staple on the island and a local favorite. It is just a hole in the wall with OK food, friendly service, a full bar and some outdoor seating/open air seating that allows you to continue to enjoy the weather you came to see! If you have energy to burn after lunch, take a trip around town and check out some of the local artisans and boutique shops.

After a nap at the hotel, get out of the tourist trap of Waikiki and hit Chinatown! You can have dinner here (the food is great and there are lots of vegan/vegetarian/special diet options)...but a warning, the service can be pretty horrible...so, my thoughts are maybe have dinner around "home base" and save this for after the bars because they are open LATE night at this little Hotel Street diner...and by then you may not be overly hungry/expecting too much from the service, so then the great food is worth it!

One of my faves on Hotel Street; you can either stop off and hang out for a drink or two out back in their open air "garden", or stay longer and get your dance on with a DJ to make you move. Always the option to hop around as there are numerous bars/lounges on the same street such as Next Door and Manifest. Personally, I stay away from most of the others (you will know right away where the "rough" bars are), but if you are up for an adventure, in a group and not afraid of some crazy...you may venture further than I! Either way, Bar 35 is a fantastic hidden gem, with a large beer selection for the beer lovers and great thin crust pizzas if your group needs a snack.

If you are feeling like you need to see a new area of the island on day 2 of your adventure, I recommend making your way a little further West (about 5 miles or so West of the Airport) and head over to Aiea Loop Trail. It is a leisurely and beautiful hike that you can actually do slightly later in the morning than most since it is heavily covered. You can start at the bottom or the top and make your way around either way. There is plenty of parking as the hike is located on state park ground. There are also picnic benches and restrooms.

Whether you opted to sleep in or do your morning hike...make your way west to Pearl Kai Shopping Center in Aiea and have lunch at Champa Thai! Hole in the wall with friendly service, cheap eats and GREAT food...this is one of my faves! I have been going to this location (there are 3 on the island, but this is my favorite) for half my life and have never been disappointed. If you are new to Thai, they have great Pad Thai as a "safe" dish. As a vegetarian, I LOVE the Garlic Tofu (which I do with brown rice, and I add broccoli, subtract mushrooms). My husband loves all the curries ( I prefer yellow) and their Thai Tea is lovely. They are BYOB now so you can always bring some beer or wine that suit this food as well.

After lunch, walk the couple hundred feet to Coffee or Tea? and have a sweet treat! I recommend trying a Boba tea (bubble tea). They make SO many flavors of milk tea with bubbles (tapioca pearls) OR custard, jellies (or plain)...but I do recommend trying a bubble tea here because if you haven't had one, this is an adventure, and if you have...this is the best! I can barely drink another bubble tea after this place. Seriously.

Day 3 can be situated up on the North Shore and this is a great way to start it off. You will come back relaxed and focused and ready for a good breakfast! Check out all of their reviews, but if you are part of the first jump of the day, you will be pretty much in and out. We went up for the first jump and were at breakfast by 8:30AM! Again, I HIGHLY suggest going up in the first jump. You aren't stuck behind others that may hold up the day. Otherwise, if you jump later you may want to plan staying for hours. So...did I mention going up early? ;-) The views are incomparable and the staff is knowledgeable, professional and personable. There is a lot of beach area to lay out, and usually some calmer waters for those that want to swim!

After a couple hours of playing in the water and napping on the beach, it may be time for some lunch. This place is for the adventurers!! But I will tell you, I have brought DOZENS and dozens of people here from all walks of life, different states, countries and tastes in everything and EVERYONE has LOVED IT! If you look it up online, Puka Dog and Hula Dog are the same thing (just a divorced couple each having their own business now) and this Haleiwa Hula Dog is a cute little lunch truck. You order in steps: bread, type of dog (Polish or VEGGIE), then a plethora of delicious sauces. It is like a unicorn pooped magical sauces just for Hula Dog. They also serve "meals" with Hawaiian style potato chips and fresh squeezed lemonade.

    Tips
    • Not sure if it is cash only there. But you should come to North Shore prepared with cash anyway. Many small artisans.
    • If you want a basic for sauces, I tell everyone: choose your heat, then mango relish and lilikoi mustard
    • My go-to: wheat bread, veggie dog (many meat eaters still love this option), mild sauce, mango relish, and then lilikoi mustard!
    • Also love the strawberry lemonade with no sugar in it (the strawberries are sweet enough, save the sugar), and Maui Onion kettle chips! So many flavors!!
    • Messy! Need napkins, but fun!! :-)

Your trip to Hawaii isn't complete without some REAL Shave Ice. Save it for North Shore...the ones South are mostly junk. Matsumoto is famous, but Aloha General Store is just as amazing (located close to Kono's in the same plaza)...so either are great options wherever you happen to be.

If you aren't beached out and want to drive around, head further North and stop off to take pictures, shop at the mom and pop stores, maybe a slice of pie at Ted's Bakery (the Chocolate Haupia is the BEST!) and maybe sit to watch the sun go down at Shark's Cove. Depending on your timeline, maybe you came here first and did some snorkeling...neither are wrong answers. I just always make my days up North an all day event and go home wiped!

If you stayed up North all day, a great place to stay close to the water and enjoy a staple of Haleiwa, is going to dinner at Haleiwa Joe's. Located close to shops, homemade ice cream (where they have mochi ice cream as well) and with a relaxed atmosphere, you can relax and enjoy some island drinks and fare. People that love Seafood will enjoy this restaurant (from what I hear, as a vegetarian I don't know much about that). Service is friendly and efficient. Great way to end the few days of local adventure!
