Imagined by the Founding Fathers as the seat of U.S. Government, created largely by George Washington's determination, designed in large part by Frenchman Pierre Charles L'Enfant, home to every President from the second (John Adams) onward - to-day this is a superb, fascinating, absorbing & safe destination for any visitor, whether from the USA, or, like myself, from overseas. To get the most out of a visit here, you need to plan your trip - otherwise you risk missing-out on the aspects that interest you most, or worse, exhausting yourself.

This well-kept square gives a good view of one side of The White House - most of the statues here are of overseas nationals who contributed to the development of The United States, but OUR clear favourite was the centrally placed memorial to the 7th President, the formidable Andrew Jackson

I don't like cemeteries, but this one is different - tastefully laid-out on a hilly wooded site. Buy a ticket at the Visitor Center for the informative trolley-bus tour. Of course, for Irish visitors, the place of pilgrimage is the elaborately decorated resting-place of assassinated President John F. Kennedy - just around the corner from the site of the "eternal flame", is the equally poignant (and very simply marked) grave of his talented brother, Robert..
