With so much to see and do in Melbourne, one day seems hardly enough, so let's keep it simple and make it as varied as possible without straying too far. The no. 86 and no. 57 trams are all you need, plus a sensible pair of walking shoes. Enjoy!

Milan S's City Tips

  • The free Melbourne Official Visitor Map is excellent. It has a very good Melbourne lane inset which you might need in case you stray.
  • Get a myki pass from any 7 Eleven store to use on the tram.

With only one day to explore, throw yourself into the Melbourne laneway experience right away by starting your urban trek with breakfast in the heart of the CBD. It's busy, buzzing, and the ambiance is as invigorating as the caffeine hits on offer. I always enjoy watching a city wake up and ready itself for the day, so pick whatever Degraves Street cafe takes your fancy and observe the local Melburnians going about their everyday business.

A bit of old world splendor is on offer here at Block Arcade – a natural progression from breakfast on Degraves Street and a great place to indulge in a bit of window shopping. They say Melbourne is where the 'old money' is and you definitely get the feeling that a lot of pride is taken in preserving the buildings in this area.

    Tips
    • I suggest taking tram 86 for the next leg of your journey. Have your "myki" card ready to pay the fare (available at any 7-eleven store).
    • Once you exit the Block, cross over Little Collins and continue through the Royal Arcade to Bourke St Mall. From there you can hop on a tram.

It's time for a welcome dose of open space at this World Heritage listed building. Built in 1880, it is one of the world's oldest exhibition pavilions and there is always something going on inside. The no. 86 tram stops virtually opposite it, so hop off and take a peek.

Smith Street offers visitors a taste of the 'real Melbourne,' without having to venture miles away from the city center. You'll find a bit of everything here – art galleries, pastry shops, old pubs, boutiques, factory outlets, bistros, restaurants, cheap eats, old furniture, knick knacks – the list goes on. It is Melbourne in a nutshell.

    Tips
    • There are some excellent factory outlets for outdoor clothing in the next block if you cross Johnston Street and stay on the left.
    • Arriving by tram 86: get off at the first stop on Smith St and continue on foot in the same direction. Go as far as Johnston St, then cross Smith St and explore the other side.
    • When you're done, hop back on the no. 86 to the CBD and get off at Elizabeth St. From here, catch no. 57 (northbound) which takes you right past the Queen Victoria market.

Even if I've just eaten this place always makes me hungry! The food hall is the sort of place a celebrity chef would visit with a TV crew, although it's all very affordable, and 'real' people do their 'real' shopping here too. Under the huge adjacent semi-open area you can buy fruit and vegetables, souvenirs, cheap gifts, and just about any style of leather jacket or coat you can imagine.

On the banks of the Yarra River, this is a lovely place to wind down, have a drink and be soothed by the flowing water. Be warned however, there are many temptations here – shopping outlets, the Ice Bar, the Malthouse Theatre and of course Crown Casino - but my pick of the bunch would be the Eureka Skydeck and its amazing views to round off the perfect day.

There are all sorts of river cruises you can do on the Yarra. Letting the city lights serenade you as you enjoy a dinner cruise might be a great way to complete a big day on the town; alternatively, a simple stroll along the riverbank might do.
