Marvellous Melbourne

94%
Found this guide helpful

The discovery of the richest vein of Gold back in 1850s determined the fate of this city. Older buildings blend with contemporary architecture to help define The Worlds Most Liveable City. Wide streets show off the major museums, theatres, galleries and major department stores but it is the lane-ways that lead to boutique shops, funky restaurants and China Town. Home to 4 million folk from most nations in the world, locals love to eat and enjoy some of the best cuisine in the world. Shopaholics have a feast of choices. Grand Theatres with great shows plus festivals galore. A garden city but Sport is King! Home to the 1956 Olympics, grand arenas that host 4 versions of football, a tennis Grand Slam Tournament, the first Test Cricket match and one of the richest horse races in the world. Immersion is easy with helpful and friendly locals combined with a well planned transport system that creaks under increasing peak hour pressure. The worlds largest tram network gets you where easy walking does not. And the first federal capital of the new nation Australia in 1901.

bukbuk51's City Tips

  • This place is for Shopping Champions; large department stores, boutiques, trendy chains, markets, out of the way curiosity shops abound.
  • Avoid peak hours during business days
  • You do not need a car if you focus within a 5 km radius of the central area; public transport is your friend.
  • Prepare for variable weather; 4 seasons in one day is common and occasionally 4 seasons concurrently. But that is part of the charm
  • Relax in the Botanic Gardens; a short walk from the centre of the city.
  • Abundant Cheap and Cheerful food available in China Town, Degraves St, Lygon St, Southbank, South Wharf
  • Transport routes usually radiate out from the city area and are frequent from 5am until midnight. Online route planning available via the public transport agency.
  • Myki is the local public transport ticket; swipe on and off for all modes of transport both in Melbourne and other Victorian towns.
  • Tipping is voluntary and usually 10% when the service exceeds expectation but zero when the job is simply done.
  • Any sporting event at the MCG = Melbourne Cricket Ground is full on crowd engagement, whether that is cricket, football or any other event. Add a visit to the great museum.

Some of the best coffee in the world is served in Melbourne, but not the wishy washy stuff of North America. Italian immigrants created both a demand and supply for quality coffee. Add cheap and cheerful cuisine at Pelligrini's, watch locals drift in and out and dwell in a famous institution

And there is so much to see and admire from on high. So much to guess about where things are located. So many places to see where great things happened - the birth of Test Cricket, the paddock where Aussie Rules was first played, the annual battle for the Australian Open tennis championship, the massive Seekers concert, the inauguration of the First Parliament of Australia, Olympic games venues, landing of immigrants ready for a New World start to life...it goes on and on. The Comedy Festival is one of the joys of living in Melbourne along with a variety of superb dining options. Last night we combined both with Supernormal providing the casual dining between laughs. Casual dining means Asian style tapas, no booking, sharing plates and modern setting. You can read any of the other reviews to get amplification of the facts along with abundant superlatives. Let me just add mine; sublime food, fantastic flavour matching, universally friendly and informed staff, a most interesting choice of dishes, fascinating wine list..... Gosh, I really need a thesaurus to do justice to this place. Casual dining does not mean anything is dumbed down; quite the opposite and it involves a pretty penny that is well worth it for the total package of delights and experiences.
