Kirsty S's City Tips

  • Brisbane is a laidback kind of place, but you’ll still need proper shoes to get into its bars and restaurants. In some cases, scruffy clothing may result in you being turned away.
  • While tipping isn’t expected in Australia, rounding up your cab fare and leaving 10% in restaurants will be much appreciated by those who work in Brisbane.
  • The most cost effective way to get around Brisbane is to get yourself a Go Card. This electronic travel ticket can be used on trains, buses, and ferries across the city and beyond.

No trip to Brisbane is complete without a ride on the CityCat. Used by locals traveling to work as much as it is tourists marveling at the sights, the CityCat is the perfect introduction to Brisbane and is an incredibly inexpensive way to see the city.

Take the CityCat all the way to the South Bank, where you’ll find beautiful gardens, numerous food and drink options, oodles of culture, and even a beach. Culture vultures should head straight to the Cultural Center, which includes the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. There’s also the Queensland Museum in this area, plus the Queensland Performing Arts Center. If all that sounds like too much, set yourself down and relax on the man-made beach instead.
