Venice is like an open air museum. You don’t need to enter a single building to enjoy the art around you -- from stunning palace facades to charming campi and calli, every part of the city is a piece of art and history. But should you crave something more formal, here is a list of famed museums and lesser-known palaces that will take you back in time to the great Republic of Venice.

Elisa Z's City Tips

  • From the airport, take public transit line 5. It takes approximately 30 minutes and is the cheapest option.
  • Venice was made for exploring on foot. You can get just about anywhere within a one-hour stroll.
  • While Venice is generally a safe city for exploring at any time, avoid hanging around the Mestre or Marghera train stations at night.
  • Purchase travel cards by week or hour (12h, 18h, 36h, 48h, 72h) to save money.
  • Take the boat from Riva degli Schiavoni to Piazza San Marco. It passes through the entire Grand Canal, offering stunning views of the surrounding buildings.
  • It is always the right time to have a spritz (wine with seltzer) in Venice! And don’t forget the cicchetti, Venetian tapas and finger foods.

The Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is one of the major symbols of Venice. Visitors can tour the Doge's private apartments, the New Prisons, and the Sale Instituzionali (Institutional Chambers), where the most important political decisions were made. Also of note is the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Higher Council Hall), which is decked out in sumptuous decorations by Veronese, Palma il Giovane, Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto.

    Elisa Z Says:

The elaborate palace Ca' Rezzonico was built in the 18th century and decorated by some of the city's most famous artists. In the 19th century, writer Robert Browning lived here, and the palace finally became a museum in the 1930s. Although much of the original artwork was sold away, the painstaking restoration is a beautiful representation of 19th-century Venice.

After years of restoration, the Galleria dell'Accademia's stunning facade is finally visible again. Named for the Academy of Fine Arts, which was founded in the 17th century and shared the same building until ten years ago, the Accademia hosts the works of such beloved artists as Giorgione, Bellini, Tintoretto and Tiziano.

The Venetian Museo Archeologico Nazionale is located in Piazza San Marco and showcases valuable artworks from the Aegean Sea area, whose purchases were possible thanks to the city's cultural and commercial relationships with Greece.
