Tinde_K's City Tips

  • Rome's pickpockets are one of the best in the world so make sure you've got all your valuables somewhere secure, like in an inner pocket, etc. Crossbody bags are a lifesaver, keep them in front of you at all times and be extra careful in squeezing crowds like in metro.
  • Pack either a small umbrella or a rain jacket; the weather can be unpredictable.
  • Wear sensible shoes as you'll be doing loads of walking.
  • Choose autumn or winter as a time to visit; Rome isn't very cold even at that time and you'll avoid the stifling crowds of the high season.

It's the heart of the Vatican, the most important place for every Christian. Crowds of people gather in the piazza before the Basilica to hear the blessing of the Holy Father the Pope. It's the most magnificent Christian sacral building you'll ever see and it's sheer size will awe you.

    • This is the time when devout believers visit for their morning masses, so do respect the place by keeping quiet. No shorts or mini skrts, women shall keep their arms covered.

Should you wish to have some lunch, I would prefer this part of Rome to Piazza Navona, which is a bit more touristy. I've found lovely Christmas presents in the small local shops, so just look around whether something catches your eye.

According to the legend it was here where a shepherd found two young boys, Romulus a Remus, founders of Rome, suckling a she-wolf. It's about 15 minutes walk from the Colosseum to this attraction and you'll see the ruins of the Forum of Augustus on your right along the way. I found this attaction through Tripadvisor and was really surprised as I didn't know what to expect and the result exceeded my expectations. It consists of unveiled ruins which come alive with a witty use of video projection. The whole tour is recorded in several languages and is as interactive as it could be. It's a wonderful experience and a gem of a sight in Rome. It's in the basement of the building and there are some dark sections, but it's not scary at all. Villa Borghese is located on the Pincian Hill full of lush green parks. Enjoy a lovely walk and then view of the Piazza del Popolo. Take a few shapshots of the gorgeous landscape before your eyes and then take the stairs down towards Piazza del Popolo. There are many sights to behold, from the famous gate and Santa maria del Popolo with Caravaggio paintings to other churches and historical buildings.

This establishment is a local pasta-maker, but they also make one type of pasta daily and sell it for about 4 euros including glass of water/wine for you to enjoy. It's a standing joint, but it's cheap, delicious and ultimately Italian.

After the shopping spree or to catch a break I'd recommend visiting the famous Caffe Greco, the first Cafe opened in Rome. Even though it's a bit pricey (espresso costs 6€), it's a wonderful attraction with a charming atmosphere and delightful desserts. With extensive portrait collections you'll feel like in an art gallery. And the coffee is wonderful!
