The arrival and departure point for visits to Capri, Marina Grande is always busy with ferries and smaller boats coming and going from its numerous piers; and the bus and funicular depots here are equally as bustling. To the left of where the ferry tickets are sold, you'll find a large and lively beach area where you can settle in the sand and watch the activity.
Just to the left of the ferry ticket offices, you'll find a small pier. It is from here that free 'gozzo' boats depart to transport you to lovely Bagni Tiberio. Set near the ruins of Emperor Augustus's ancient seaside villa, this beach club is very popular with Caprese families, since it is both low key and equipped with plenty of shady spots for those who don't want to spend the whole day in the hot sun. And it's proximity to Marina Grande makes it your best best bet if you are just visiting Capri for the day.
Marina Piccola was Capri's first port and was once used by the emperors. Today, the area still seems to cater to 'royalty,' as its bay is filled with luxury yachts and private beach clubs. However, those on a tighter budget can enjoy two small, free beach areas next to Lo Scoglio delle Sirene.
This beach club was built in the 1930s and retains much of its original retro charm. There are two levels to choose from: on the pebbles next to the water, or higher up on a platform looking out over the Marina Piccolo. The restaurant is also very good, with cold bottles of local white wine on hand to pair with whatever dishes you choose.
Built on top of the rocks at the waters edge, face your chairs out towards the Faraglioni rocks at this restaurant/beach club and settle in for the day. What I like most about Lo Scoglio delle Sirene are the many small areas that are just large enough for two chairs, so you always feel like you have the whole place to yourself!
El Merendero Snack Bar is the best budget option in Marina Piccola. Here you can rent a low slung beach chair ('sadriao') for much less than what the private beach clubs charge.
Most visitors to Capri come just for the day and don't have time to explore this side of the island, but they are really missing out! Calmer and quieter than the Piazzetta and the busy shopping streets, Anacapri offers a lot to see and do. Before you head to the beach, wander streets filled with a mix of boutiques, local bakeries, and fruit stalls.
If you want to stay at the beach until sunset, Lido del Faro is the place to go. This is where we locals go to celebrate wedding anniversaries and summer birthdays. You can swim in the saltwater pool or dive off the rocks into the ocean; and after all that activity, the good quality restaurant will serve up your fill of fresh local seafood and pasta dishes, along with an excellent wine list.
Il Riccio is one of the the most luxurious choices for a day at the beach in Capri. Its whitewashed wooden decking and bright turquoise tables and chairs, built high above the water (and the famous Blue Grotto), make you feel as though you are on a boat. And the Michelin-starred restaurant is renowned for it's enormous dessert room — yes, an entire room just filled with dessert!
Belvedere di Tragara offers one of the best views in Capri, and just a few steps beyond the overlook you will find a small sign for two beach clubs that sit just over 800 steps below, at the foot of the Faraglioni rocks.
This very elegant beach club has been a place to see and be seen for the past 50 years. The blue-and-white striped umbrellas are scattered all over the rocks, and you can choose to rent a sun lounger, a chair or a white mattress to lounge on for the day. The restaurant serves good sit-down meals and also allows you to order beers, gelato, water and more to enjoy at your beach chair.
