Havana is a city of extraordinary beauty. From the run-down charm of the Malecon to the historic old town, picturesque spots for romantic moments are plentiful. The charm and romantic atmosphere of the city extends beyond the eternally beautiful Old Havana; wander slightly further afield to the time-warped Centro Habana and Vedado to escape the tourists. First, explore Old Havana wandering hand in hand, then enjoy live Cuban music and mojitos on a shady balcony in the lesser-known Vedado.

Mercyfcb's City Tips

  • The weather in Cuba can be temperamental. Although it is often beautifully sunny, a light raincoat may be useful.
  • Food options in Cuba can be limited (especially for vegetarians), however delicious inexpensive meals are often offered in "casas particulares" (private homestays).
  • Havana is a city best explored on foot, therefore a pair of comfortable shoes is essential.
  • A basic understanding of Spanish is extremely useful, especially when staying in a "casa particular."
  • Sun cream, toiletries, and feminine hygiene products are extremely expensive in Cuba, therefore be sure to pack your own.
  • Cuban currency is not available internationally, so you must purchase your CUC's on arrival. Money can be exchanged easily at the airport, although the queues can be long.
  • Getting out of Havana Airport can take a while, so bear this in mind when estimating the time you will arrive at your accommodation.
  • The easiest way to get around Havana is by taxi.

Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus many buildings have been beautifully restored. The area is a maze of gorgeous architecture, vibrant colors, and points of great historical significance. Despite the fact that it is the part of the city that is most saturated with tourists, it remains a fantastic place to explore on foot. Couples can enjoy getting lost together in the narrow and enchanting streets of Old Havana.

    Tips
    • Explore beyond the impressive facades; the buildings often open up into beautiful courtyards.
    • Lose yourself here and you will soon stumble upon less touristy areas, which will give you a better sense of the "real Havana."
    • Although Old Havana is compact and the streets are often narrow, the simple grid system makes for easy navigation.

The Plaza Vieja is stunningly beautiful, and despite the fact it is slightly more manicured than other squares in Havana, it manages to retain its charm. The vibrancy of the painted buildings that encircle the square make it a great place for photos.

Plaza de Armas is Havana's oldest square. The beautiful park in the center is full of trees and the lush foliage provides shady spots to enjoy a romantic moment. The square often plays host to musicians and bands, thus it is a great place to listen to Cuban music in a picturesque setting.

This hotel is extremely luxurious, and in terms of accommodation is perhaps too expensive for most. However, I am recommending it as a place to visit rather than as a place to stay. The hotel has a rooftop pool and restaurant, and you can enjoy a sunset view while sipping on a reasonably priced drink or having a snack without being a hotel guest. The hotel boasts spectacular views of El Capitolio and has a beautiful pool — the perfect spot for a romantic evening.

    • When it feels too hot to wander around the city, head here for a refreshing drink and a swim.
    • Don't miss the sunset views from the roof!

Stroll hand-in-hand along El Paseo del Prado and watch as classic cars cruise by. The boulevard runs between El Malecon and El Capitolio, making it the perfect walkway between the two attractions. Street vendors sell art here, and the benches along the edges make perfect people-watching perches. Musicians often locate themselves along the boulevard, and their Cuban melodies add to the romantic atmosphere. The architecture of the buildings on either side of Paseo del Prado is both stunningly beautiful and somewhat dilapidated, perfectly embodying the unique atmosphere of Havana.

    Tips
    • The stretches of road on either side of the pedestrian boulevard are extremely busy, so be mindful when crossing.
    • The walkway is polished and can become very slippery when it rains, so walk with care.

El Malecon epitomizes the juxtaposition of beauty and decay apparent throughout Havana, the faded colors of the beautiful facades crumbling in the sea air. Enjoy a romantic jaunt along this atmospheric stretch and embrace being splashed by the occasional rogue waves that wash over the sea wall. It is also possible to hire a classic car (pick one up at Central Park) for a romantic drive in this beautiful time-warped setting.

The Callejon de Hammel is a vibrant place to soak up the Caribbean atmosphere. Pause to appreciate the mesmerizing street art and the creative use of recycled materials, then sway with your partner to rumba rhythms. The Callejon de Hammel may be busy and bustling, but it is a fantastic place to dance with your partner in a truly Caribbean setting. Explore a bit and you will also find more secluded spots, like the area of benches made entirely from recycled bath tubs!

Casa Miglis is a Swedish/Cuban restaurant in the heart of Centro Habana. Although the outside of the building may appear extremely modest, step inside and you will experience the unique combination of chic Swedish minimalism and vibrant Cuban flare. The food is delicious and the interior design is beautiful: Cozy corners and ambient lighting make this the perfect place to enjoy a romantic meal for two. Unlike many restaurants in Old Havana, Casa Miglis is rarely packed with tourists. Its unassuming exterior and its location in the midst of Centro Habana make it feel like you are uncovering a somewhat secret spot. If you walk from Old Havana to Casa Miglis, you will have an opportunity to experience the more authentic, non-touristy Centro Habana.
